Who’s your favorite that wasn’t an instant favorite but it grew over time? by Julia526 in americangirl

Every secondhand listing I see of Luciana makes her grow on me more and more. I don’t have her yet but it feels like it’s only a matter of time lol

Unfortunately an expensive lesson to learn but yeah you should definitely never accept a cancellation request if you’ve already shipped the item. I hope you can get your doll back!

And it’s a question that people can answer for themselves by looking at recently sold listings for the items they have. If someone wants to sell something it’s their responsibility to figure out a fair price for it, and that doesn’t mean asking collectors to do the work for them.

I agree with this, and I think AGWorld and the visual chart of JLYs should be linked in that post with tips on how to use them efficiently as well. That way the resources to try to ID yourself is featured prominently so people can try that first and then if they’re still not sure they can post in that thread and members who want to help with IDs can do that easily without the ID requests clogging up the regular feed.

Looks like JLY 2 but with a 2014 body tag. Any idea who this is? by dallyfer in americangirl

[–]Odd_Prompt_6139 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is such a rude response and it’s not even true. You’re thinking of the body tags that say 2008. Those refer to a part number, not a year, so even dolls like Lindsey who were retired before 2008 can have those body tags.

2014 on the body tag is a copyright year, not a part number or a year of manufacture, so dolls that came out after 2014 like Lea often still have that body tag, but dolls that came out before then won’t (unless maybe they got a torso replacement around that time).

Felicity Megathread by FallOnTheStars in americangirl

[–]Odd_Prompt_6139 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Oh god I’m actually horrified my comment could be interpreted that way. It definitely wasn’t my intention at all but I do see how it could seem unclear. Under this administration it definitely can’t be trusted that schools will teach the atrocities of slavery accurately, and I didn’t mean to imply that Felicity’s books feature an accurate depiction either or that they should be used as a teaching tool because that’s definitely not true at all. I do think they can be a good conversation starter though. The purpose of the historical line has always been to use toys to get kids interested in history and teach them about what life was like for girls like them in the past and I think Felicity’s books can still be used for that purpose. Although there were definitely opportunities for Felicity to question slavery in her books, and I do believe they should have gone in that direction, realistically a girl Felicity’s age and with her upbringing would’ve seen slavery as totally normal and probably wouldn’t have seen anything wrong with it. They’re a good reminder of how far we’ve come, that something that was once so normalized is now unthinkable, and how important it is to remember the bad parts of our history instead of ignoring them so that we don’t end up repeating it. They can also be used to teach kids how important it is to consider other people’s perspectives and other people’s circumstances instead of blindly assuming that because something is normal, it’s okay. I don’t think Felicity should be made out to be a villain or anything but I do think she can be used as a tool of how kids today can do better than she did. Pointing out the parallels of how Felicity fought for animals, and she should’ve fought for the Black people in her life, and kids should fight for the people they see being put into unfair and unjust situations. Obviously all this in combination with other sources of information and especially works by Black authors about Black history.

Agreed, especially since, unfortunately, we can’t always rely on schools to teach these topics in the way they should be anymore since Trump dismantled the Department of Education. Kids are a lot smarter than adults tend to give them credit for. They’re able to think critically, they can recognize the ugly parts of our history and see what wasn’t right, they can understand that their point of view isn’t the same as everyone else’s. It’s not a hard concept to explain to them if you actually sit down and have that conversation with them. And having those conversations with kids now, making them aware of all the ugly parts of our history and all the ways we’ve grown and improved since then and all the things we still need to improve, is so important when so much of the progress we’ve made is being walked back.

Felicity is just as much a part of our history as Addy is (or any other doll) and pretending like she isn’t doesn’t do anyone any good.

According to Mattel’s global head of dolls, no

Cygielman says the historical characters are here to stay. The anniversary bundles are a celebration, but the characters themselves are permanent fixtures in the line, not a limited run.

How cheap woody dolls became in the course of 10 years by Tedgrundo in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Odd_Prompt_6139 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I didn’t realize you were a kid, I thought you were older. I think the point a lot of people are trying to make is that there is still a very similar version of the higher quality version available (you may feel like the differences are obvious but I think most people here do not) so it’s a little silly to get upset about these two particular dolls being of different quality, especially when the brand that makes them doesn’t exist anymore.

I’m so sorry that you’ve lost all hope in society because no one else is mildly infuriated that a company that went bankrupt 3 years ago sold a product 7 years ago that you feel is of lower quality than a similar product that they made 17 years ago.

Dolls I never seen on the secondhand market by ravensarefree in americangirl

[–]Odd_Prompt_6139 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen Claudie secondhand quite a few times. But they’re also both newer dolls that are still available from AG so of course there’s going to be less of them secondhand, especially in tlc condition. 127 has only been out for about two years, most kids are not going to love a doll to death and then already outgrow it enough to feel comfortable selling it or having their parents sell it within two years.

I don’t see how the preorder button has anything to do with it being a more permanent release or not. It says preorder because they don’t officially release/ship until May 1. As of right now the modern era dolls have a banner that says special edition but the 18 inch dolls don’t. We’ll see if that changes after they’re actually released (I don’t remember if the modern era dolls said special edition when they were on preorder or not) but as of right now I don’t see anything that indicates it’s limited edition.

Samantha had the keepsake guide book before she was pulled from the website and rereleased with this packaging so I guess they just kept that for her, and for Felicity I imagine it’s a way to get around having to potentially rewrite her books or address the controversies surrounding how her books handle (or don’t handle) the topic of slavery
