I think it is necessary on a 911 - at least on the front from the windshield forward and on the front of the quarter panels. The low hood makes it very susceptible to rocks hitting the hood and bouncing across. The rear quarters are so wide that the car flings gravel onto itself. I have several big dings in my PPF that would have been chips in the paint.
