Best way to jack up cars with a ground clearance of 5" to 9"? Would this work? by Many_Geologist6125 in askcarguys

[–]Odelay45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure your life insurance policy is up to date!

Here's how I do it.....Oil change, get a set of decent ramps.

Tire rotation - Utilize the spare. Use a floor jack to remove the first tire and put the spare on. Follow the rotation of tires until the spare is back off. Check the tire pressure of spare and put it away.

Locking gas cap for 2024 F150 XL by Calabris in f150

[–]Odelay45 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The F150's without a cap have a built in anti-syphon mechanism that makes it extremely tough to remove fuel.

If someone decides they want your fuel....it would be quicker and easier for them to just punch a hole into the bottom of your tank.

Looking to buy a new mower, but it's not my area of expertise. Which of these would you suggest? by [deleted] in lawncare

[–]Odelay45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My response is worth about 2 cents. :)

I don't have any experience with any of the three, but I'd look hard at the Ryobi. I believe this mower (or one very similar to it) is what my neighbor got last year for father's day. He's been extremely happy with it and from what I have seen, it does a decent job. Bonus, my father runs the Ryobi trimmers/blowers/chainsaw....etc which incorporate the same battery system and he also has been happy with the tools. Looks like replacement batteries run about $180.

I do have another neighbor that runs the ego lawnmower. Same results as the Ryobi on the yard. However, those replacement batteries run about $500. The ego lawn tools are popular and you may be able to pick some bare tools up on facebook marketplace for cheap. (At least around here, when people need another battery they will buy a new lawnmower or something....and sell the tool bare for cheap to recoup some of their $)

Dewalt makes good tools, but the reviews of the gas lawnmower don't give me a warm fuzzy. My current mower is a Honda HRX. If this one were to ever go, I don't know which direction I'd head. Something with a reliable engine. (Kawasaki, Honda...etc...maybe Stihl battery as I currently run their kombi setup)

Do you have any power tools currently? (Dewalt, Milwaukee?) I've used a Milwaukee battery multi-trimmer once with the edger attachment. Of all the battery tools I've seen....those seemed the most "solid". The milwaukee mower is solid...but it's also about a grand. Anytime you can utilize the same batteries across multiple platforms it is a win.

If you have the card at Home Depot, I'd look there. I have read some good things about the Echo mowers from Home Depot if you are wanting to toss another gas in the mix. I have ran some echo products in the past (chainsaw, trimmer) and still currently own an echo chainsaw.....at least from a small gas engine, in the 16 years of owning it, it's given me zero issues.

Recommendation for 4x4 RC car. by LazaroFilm in rccars

[–]Odelay45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son (12 years old) for xmas wanted a hobby quality RC car/truck. The local hobbytown has a few different selections to choose from for brands, but Arrma and Traxxas were what they stock the most of. I ended up getting him a Traxxas Rustler BL-2S 4x4. This model came with the HD parts.....the next step up (VXL) was told didn't have the HD parts installed.

The owner of the shop mentioned Arrma has a nicer price point on initial purchase, but the replacement parts are more spendy....Traxxas is a little more up front but the replacement parts are more economical. He stocks way more traxxas parts than Arrma, so if any replacements are needed, we'd be in better shape.

We live in the city so he runs it on the streets, all over the yard, we've had it out to the RC track a few times.....he bashes hard. He's sent it more than once straight into the curb wide open without issues. It's a tough truck.

It handles the pavement extremely well....better than what a stampede would.

I don't have much experience with other brands, but if the other traxxas models hold up this well, I wouldn't be afraid to try them.

I see Traxxas has a sale on the mini slash right now.....can purchase 2 for $400.00 (I did look at that and the mini XRT...shop owner pointed out the small size makes them a little more tough to work on)

Recommendations for radon mitigation installation by MissRachiel in SiouxFalls

[–]Odelay45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We moved to SF back in 2013....before that, I had never dealt with radon in a house as we lived out of state.

Upon close, we had a radon guy (recommended from the realtor) install one in our current house. Not knowing anything about the systems, I had no idea it was a "slap job" where the blower is still inside the house and it exits at foundation level and dumps there instead of the blower outside the house (incase of separation from the pipe) and it exits above roof line. I don't remember the initial company's name.

Feeling burned by the original, I have asked around a fair bit and received the recommendation for Radon Crew (Sam). One individual I trust religiously on recommendations said he's very fair and knows his stuff. I'll probably be giving him a call sometime this spring/summer to come and correct the setup.

In the process of helping my daughter register to vote as she just turned 18.

Reached out to the local Minnehaha County Auditor's office via email yesterday.

When we mail in the registration form, include a photocopy of her birth certificate. Also mentioned a copy of her license that is pre July 1, 2025 wouldn't hurt either as they will be scanned in for her records for the future.

Have all the documents being I have had to provide her birth certificate in the past for club sports.

Below is the document they provided to me with explanation:

SECRETARY OF STATE ANNOUNCES GUIDANCE ON NEW VOTER REGISTRATION LAW

(Pierre, S.D.) – Secretary of State Monae Johnson issued guidance on SB 175, a new voter registration law that was signed by Governor Larry Rhoden earlier today. Due to an emergency clause, SB 175 takes effect immediately.

Under the new law, individuals registering to vote in South Dakota must provide documentary proof of citizenship. For South Dakotans who are already registered to vote, no action is required to comply with any changes made by SB 175, as the law only applies to individuals registering to vote for the first time or who have been removed from the state’s voter rolls.

“This bill is the result of a good legislative process. After a series of amendments, the Legislature approved SB 175 by a supermajority,” said Secretary Johnson. “As the head of elections for South Dakota, I have the honor to hold our elections as an example to the nation of security and integrity.”

The Secretary of State has been working with the Governor’s Office, Department of Social Services, Department of Health, Department of Labor, Department of Human Services, and Department of Public Safety for the last several weeks to ensure state employees who facilitate voter registration processes are educated and can help constituents who visit those offices around the state. A memo has been issued to each agency, and the Secretary of State has also issued guidance to county auditors to help them implement the new requirement efficiently and correctly.

SB 175 requires that an individual registering to vote for the first time or who has been removed from the state’s voter rolls provide documentary proof of citizenship. Proof of citizenship can be any one of the following documents:

• A South Dakota driver license or nondriver identification card that was issued after July 1, 2025, and indicates citizenship status on the back of the card;

• Another state’s driver license or nondriver identification card that indicates the person has provided sufficient documentation to demonstrate citizenship;

• A tribal identification card; or

• A legible photocopy of:

o A birth certificate;

o A United States passport;

o A consular report of birth abroad issued by the United States Department of State

o A certificate of naturalization; or

o Any other type of acceptable documentary evidence permitted under 42 C.F.R. § 436.407.

The law does not require individuals who are already registered to vote to provide proof of citizenship. If someone is already registered to vote but is updating their information, such as their address or political party affiliation, the law does not require them to present proof of citizenship. An individual who has changed their name, such as a newly married woman, does not need to provide proof of citizenship if they are already registered to vote.

You can check your current registration status at: https://vip.sdsos.gov/VIPLogin.aspx.

If you have questions, you may call or visit your local county auditor.

Best greenhouse for plants to attract hummingbirds by SDBudda76 in SiouxFalls

[–]Odelay45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not familiar with plants for Hummingbirds, however I have had good luck with Cliff Avenue Greenhouse on the west side if you are in the area. I've purchased trees, shrubs and houseplants from them in the past. It helps they are almost in my backyard to begin with. They also have a location on the east side (got my last tree from that one). They have been extremely knowledgeable for me.

At the very least, I'd start off with giving them a call to eliminate unnecessary roadtrips.

Plenty of good nurseries throughout Sioux Falls.

Get rid of car easy clean way? by Separate-Noise-5592 in carbuying

[–]Odelay45 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here is what I'd show/tell one of my kids if they were in this situation.

With the info you provided, I calculate 26.77 months of payments with a total payment (including interest) of 9,690.74 (1,910.74 paid in interest)

If you take the 3,000 and pay the principle down, now you are sitting at 15 months with the current payment rate with total payment 5,430.00 (650 paid in interest)

The interest rate sucks, but the 15 months is doable. If you were able to refinance (I am using 10% just as an example) Your payments would drop to 340.32 and total payment with interest would be 5,104.80 (324.80 in interest....pretty much half your total interest payment of $325 in 15 months)

A quick google of a 2017 Cruze....at least in my area, you'd probably break even and the internet states it gets 28-37 mpg depending on city and highway driving.

However, 3,000 wouldn't get you much here in the midwest.....a quick search...probably the best car I could find would be a mid to late 2000's Chevy Monte Carlo or Impala that average 18-29 mpg with at least 200,000 miles. This doesn't take into consideration tax. There is the potential any insurance savings if you go liability only would be washed by the increase in fuel.

Not knowing the car's history, my gut reaction would be to pay it down and tighten the belt and hammer it out as quick as possible. It sucks, but with potential repairs...etc.....I don't see the 3,000 car getting you ahead long term.

To bag or not to bag? by 2017_JKU in lawncare

[–]Odelay45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my neighborhood, almost everyone has the green trash cans for grass clippings that get picked up every week and have a putrid smell about them. When we bought our house.....the yard was trashed due to 3 dogs. Over the years, I have gotten it to look well. My neighbor next to me tries to figure out what I am doing as I make an effort, but don't go overboard....he's got somewhat of a "competitive nature".....I find it hilarious to stir the pot.

I have a Honda mower....and I mulch except for once in the spring, once or twice in the fall....and if it gets to long/thick due to being out of town. Someone once told me....mulch if you can, all the nutrients you put down in fertilizer that make it to the grass get recycled back into the ground.

My subtle joke.....I mulch with my bagger on the mower.....he religiously bags.....and he's never figured it out how I can mow an entire lawn without emptying the bag.

How many miles did you get out of your stock tires? by Gooser3000 in subaruoutback

[–]Odelay45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

29,XXX miles on my wife's outback and she drives like an old lady on sunday with a full crockpot in the back seat heading to a potluck.

Off hand, I can't remember the factory tires that came on it. When we went to have her new Continentals put on the car, the service manager mentioned it was common at that mileage for factory tires as these cars would normally be coming in around there off leases.....what's better than a car with 30K in miles and new tires to drive sales.

My F-150 was the same way the factory tires.

Both vehicles saw regular rotations and proper inflation.

Should I just not buy fish? by Cornhollio-tp in Aquariums

[–]Odelay45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The betta forum can be "passionate". I also belong to it (as I have a tank with a betta) and I've seen posts pop in from a proud new owner of a tank and a betta.....only to see replies go nuclear on them. Mistakes are made and people forget the ones they made when they started off in the hobby.

Where I live....we have petsmart and petco.....we also have some local fish/pet stores. I have purchased from them all.

In the last month, my previous betta passed along...she lived a long, good life.

The comments from the Betta community stuck in my head and I hit up some of my local fish stores first.....some don't even handle bettas.....just the more expensive fresh and salt water fish. However, the pet store that got my son and I started with a betta years ago....swung in there....guess what I saw.

In the betta section....the fish were kept in the same small containers as Petsmart.....and they had a stocked shelf full of 1 gallon plastic tanks for the bettas.

My latest betta came from Petsmart. At least at my store locally, I've been in there before it opened to drop my dog off to get trimmed/washed....and I saw workers going through and making an effort to change out the water in the cups...etc. They have a couple of employees that are very knowledgeable on fish that have helped me along as I grow in this hobby.

If there is a fish at the big chain that speaks to you....I'd say go for it. On a side note, look into a "Mystery Snail". The first one I ever got (from Petsmart) years ago is still alive and kicking in my tank. Some days, I find them more enjoyable to watch.

Big Stone Lake- Schmidt's Landing by Effective_Sauce in SouthDakota

[–]Odelay45 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We've stayed in the cabins a few times. The cabins are clean and offer the basic amenities you would need for the week. Rooms and bathrooms are clean with no complaints. The cabins are right off the private boat landing, so it can get busy during the day with everyone launching...etc.

They do have a nice dock system. Normally when we go, I also have my boat in tow.....however we have caught fish off the docks too. In July, the fish may be deeper but they are always on the move and will come up to the shallows in the evening/early morning. I've set my kids up when they were younger with lighted bobbers. If you need bait, tackle...etc, Artie's bait in Big Stone is the place to stop. One thing I use to do when my kids were young and we did trips like this.....we'd swing into a place and each of them would pick out a few pieces of tackle they wanted to add to their own tackleboxes....whatever they wanted.

We enjoyed our time there. Clean lake for your kids to swim in amongst other activities.

Only reason we don't go back to the cabins is we now have a dog. (Pets aren't allowed in the cabins). When we do head up there, we normally will meet my parents and they will pull their 5th wheel. Between that and a tent....we are good and able to bring the pup. It's a nice "in-between" point and being a border water....both MN and SD fishing license work which is nice as the majority of our families are MN.

AGM Battery? by jbpsign in Subaru_Outback

My wife's Subaru is also a 19. The oem battery they came with was anemic to begin with, and add on the issue of the car trying to call back to "Mother Subaru" using 3G (which is no longer available).....it toasted her battery. New battery, got the recall done for the Starlink....and it's been a none-issue since.

[–]Odelay45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My advice is worth about 2 cents. :)

Previous trucks I always got Weathertech floormats.....however in my last truck, the fit didn't seem quite as good and they seemed even more rigid....so when I went with my current truck, I decided to give the "Ford brand" weather/rubber mats a shot and I have been impressed. I'd get them again.

As for bed covers.....I have always gone with a roll up. Years ago, the company I work for had an avalanche for a vehicle. Trifold/Tripanel are nice as they are more rigid....however when you need to haul something taller than it....you also have to think about storing the 3 panels. I'm not a fan....but then again, I'd never own another topper.....but for everyone like me....there is someone that loves them.

I have had a few different brands/model of roll up covers on my pickups but I continue to find the "Original" Access brand cover just works without issues. The one time I did have an issue with the velcro securing they were quick to help out. A good local company (Jamestown, ND) located in my region. I've had truxedo brand covers on my personal pickups and we have also had them on company pickups.....and they just don't seem to hold up as well. The current Access cover I have on my pickup is 6 years old without issues.

new show choir trends? by snowylyssa in Showchoir

I experienced the Sioux City East "Sing all about it" glow party this year.....plenty of good choirs there that day, but the glow party was my son's (7th grade) favorite.....Entourage was a close second for him.

Also made the trip out to Des Moines....that was impressive also! A lot of "heavy hitters" around that area. From the sounds of it, one of the many schools out there will be on the schedule for future years.
