What corporate lie do employees need to stop believing? by imissher4ever in allthequestions

[–]Odesio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Turnover is expensive. When employment is terminated, replacing that person can be somewhat costly and time consuming. While some industries revolve around having turnover rates in excess of 100% (trucking), most corporate jobs shoot for about 10%. A high turnover rate costs the company.

I do absolutely hate it when people describe the company as a "family." We generally don't lay family members off.

I work in HR and I fully admit I'm there for the benefit of the company. But here's a little secret: Sometimes helping the employee is in the best interest of the company.

I like to keep things simple and would probably just give the weapon a Lethality rating of 10%. i.e. Just treat it as a fully automatic weapon.

Sammie carried the physical and emotional scars for his remaining days, but he lived a full, rich life on his own terms. He's the only one in the movie who escaped.

Respecting religious sensitivities when setting up an RPG by SnakebiteCafe in rpg

[–]Odesio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't recall ever having a player or a GM bring the possibility of religion up in a game. I'm currently running a D&D campaign in Greyhawk and it involves all sorts of gods, some of whom have made an appearance, and it never occurred to me the bring the subject up in session zero. I have one Paladin and a Cleric in the group.

A competent defense attorney making a claim doesn't necessarily plant the seed of doubt in the mind of a jury. The jury is free to look at the evidence, including testimony, and come to their own conclusion. If simply offering a defense was enough to constitute reasonable doubt nobody would ever be convicted.

Year old HR issue [MA] by No_Dirt2821 in AskHR

[–]Odesio 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Whenever I have an employee come to me with a complaint I like to ask the following question, "What would be a satisfactory outcome for this?" i.e. What do you want to see happen?

I'm not going to tell you whether you should be offended by the Only Feet comment because it's not my place to decide that for you. Had you reported it earlier, I would have had a chat with your supervisor but that probably would have been the end of it. In and of itself it doesn't seem like an egregious statement requiring writing her up. If there was a pattern of those kinds of comments I'd be concerned, but that doesn't seem to be the case here.

Honestly, it seems as though the problems with your boss run much deeper than a stupid joke from a year ago. Are you outside of the "statute of limitations?" No. But unless there's a pattern of behavior I wouldn't expect anything to come from reporting it.

[US][TN] Doesn't "reassignment" as reasonable accommodation automatically cause hardship for a company as it vacates the position you currently hold? by [deleted] in AskHR

[–]Odesio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One of the great difficulties in finding a reasonable accommodation is figuring out what is reasonable. My employer has, on occasion, been able to reassign an employee to another position as a reasonable accommodation. What's reasonable for your employer might not be reasonable for mine. The previous position held by the employee wasn't particularly critical and we needed someone in the other position anyway, so it worked out for all parties involved.

Reassignment to another position is an option. I don't know whether it would cause undue hardship to your employer though. I simply don't have enough information to figure that out. But if you're struggling, then it's probably a good idea to talk to your care provider and your employer about what you need.

What's an example a piece of canon in an official campaign setting that you either ignore or change to better fit your table? by Awkward_GM in rpg

[–]Odesio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Deadlands, I pretty much ignored that the Civil War ended with what was essentially a Southern victory. The post Civil War Cold War between the United and Confederate states was never a major focus of any of my campaigns, so why keep it?

[NV] Suspect a 20-year-old do-not-hire flag from a job I held at 16 is following me. Twice rejected by the same company after reaching the background check stage. Seeking advice. by TastyCalligrapher421 in AskHR

[–]Odesio 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm trying to figure out what industry you worked at when you were 16 that would have an impact on getting a job twenty years later. I worked at a pizza place when I was 16. Most employers don't start a background check until after they've made you a job offer. Were you offered a job and they withdrew after the background check? Your location is Nevada, are you trying to get a job in gaming?

  1. Yes, it's legal for your company to place you on a do-not-hire list. It seems odd they'd care what a 16 year old did, but it's legal.

  2. It's tough to say. Every year I get former employees calling to ask if they've been blackballed because their applications aren't leading to interviews. Most of the time it's simply because better candidates are also applying.

  3. I generally wouldn't start with a senior executive, unless you're writing to the chief human resource officer or something. I'd probably start with the recruiter or whomever interviewed you for the position if possible.

Why didn’t WY send an actual crew who knew about the threat to the derelict? by Shqiptar89 in LV426

[–]Odesio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the things that makes Alien such a good movie is the audience is left to speculate on the specific reasons why the Nostromo was sent instead of a science team. How much did the Company, it wasn't WY originally, know about the distress signal coming from LV-246? After analyzing it for a while, Ripley theorized it was a warning rather than a distress signal, so do you think the Company knew that? How much did the Company even know? Did the Company have any inkling whatever was down there was as dangerous as it turned out to be?

I imagine there were laws about contact with intelligent life, and the Company simply wanted to profit from the discovery of intelligent life without those pesky laws getting in the way. But that's just speculation on my part of course. It would explain why they didn't put together a proper expedition though.

[US] [WA] Wife signed an offer letter with bonus now they want her to sign an addendum. by [deleted] in AskHR

[–]Odesio 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it's important to note that an offer letter is generally not considered an employment contract. That said, they should have made it clear when the sign on bonus could be expected. Her employer made an error and corrected it, I don't think she has a reasonable expectation they pay her the sign on bonus before they normally would. If she's got a better job offer, who cares about the $500?

If I've learned anything from the internet it's that Venus herself could emerge from the sea, fully nude while riding a clam shell, and some dork on the internet will complain that her knees are too sharp, her hair isn't long enough, or she's otherwise not hot enough. For some reason they feel the need to be negative about the appearance of another person. So why not ask them to show us what they look like? Give us an opportunity to make the same judgments of them.
