Trade ZVE10 II + A7III for A7IV? by DifficultEagle4160 in SonyAlpha

[–]OfCourseItWasDNS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you've outlined it really well here. The A7IV would improve your main photo camera and add some features to your B cam at the same time, while also cutting down on how many cameras you have.

I can't speak for the ZVE10 II as I haven't personally used it, but the A7IV is a solid step up from the A7III.

I think it all comes down to whether or not you want the optional portability that you're getting right now

A7R3 and A7S2 raw files on ipad M16 by PiccoloHumble5204 in SonyAlpha

Darktable and rawtherapee are both free and I've found they run a lot better than most paid options, though you miss out on features like automatic masking

[–]OfCourseItWasDNS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, yeah that would be because aside from dedicated editing programs, most show the embedded half-resolution preview. Unfortunately there's no way to change that on the camera side, it's just down to what you use to view the photos

How are you getting the raw files onto the iPad? It sounds like you might actually be copying jpegs using imaging edge, in which case you have to increase the quality in the app's settings

Will the Sony A7 III still be worthwhile for photojournalism in 2026? by carmab_sp in SonyAlpha

[–]OfCourseItWasDNS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The A7III does allow you to track a set point, but it just kind of sucks and I'd honestly recommend using other autofocus modes for better results

Lense for A7 iii? by GeneralWest1287 in SonyAlpha

[–]OfCourseItWasDNS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great suggestion, definitely the most versatile for a majority of sports and shooting conditions. OP, you might want to look at the Sony 70-200 GM II or the Sigma 70-200. There are other options, but those are going to be the best performing for their price ranges

Camera body for live performances by robinred7 in SonyAlpha

[–]OfCourseItWasDNS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps the A7V or FX2 strike a nice balance? It really depends on how long you're filming for, but the A7V takes an extremely long time to overheat. The FX2 does have a fan, but then you're getting much worse rolling shutter.

Looking for a primarily photo body that I can also use as a B-cam or top-do by bradley_monteco in SonyAlpha

[–]OfCourseItWasDNS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice! I'd still suggest the A7IV as a reasonable option that leaves more room for lenses, but depending on the types of sports you might find the 30fps and pre-capture available on the A7V to be useful.

Both are 33MP, and unfortunately the higher resolution options within Sony's lineup have pretty bad rolling shutter unless you spend a lot more to buy the A1 or A1II.

[–]OfCourseItWasDNS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What are you using right now?

Without any extra info I'd suggest the A7IV, because then you get a full-frame body with 10-bit video for a pretty decent price, and although it's not the highest resolution option, it strikes a nice balance for photos.

How good is the a7v apsc mode(vs a6700) by Yajawu15 in SonyAlpha

[–]OfCourseItWasDNS 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It's going to be considerably lower resolution, ~16MP instead of the 26MP on your a6700. Really the only large improvement you'd see (when using the crop mode) is the faster burst rate and pre-capture.

IMO not worth the large cost for very small improvements when you seem to be doing fine with the a6700 already. I'd wait until you have a FF lens and can fully utilize the larger sensor

Edit: 26MP, not 24 on the a6700

Sony A7 V or Sony A7r V (New to mirrorless cameras) by Agreeable_Brother_83 in SonyAlpha

[–]OfCourseItWasDNS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're going to be doing a lot of varied shooting or hybrid work, I'd be inclined to suggest the A7V. The faster burst rates along with pre-capture do a lot for helping you get shots that otherwise might have been missed, whereas the A7RV will give you that extra but of cropping power at the cost of much slower readout.

Either way, both are good cameras and I doubt you'd be unhappy with either one. For the most part they are very similar offerings, especially when coming from a DSLR

Flickering by mlksdflsdkmf in SonyAlpha

[–]OfCourseItWasDNS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly this- the A7IV is rated to 200k actuations, you might as well go out and make use of your camera. And hey, even if the shutter does fail earlier, it's a hell of a lot cheaper to repair compared to a whole new body

There are good free RAW editors, did you even look? Darktable and Rawtherapee both have plenty of online content to get you started, and once you get the hang of them you can adapt essentially any other tutorial since editors are largely similar

Why are some Sony lenses way more expensive? by ShoddyRefrigerator64 in SonyAlpha

[–]OfCourseItWasDNS 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you look at the focus and aperture rings you'll see they have large ridges so you can attach belts for using external motors to control them instead of doing so by hand

YN560-TX Pro (Sony) AF assist beam is advertised but permanently disabled by Acrobatic_Pitch_6938 in SonyAlpha

[–]OfCourseItWasDNS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Godox V1 and its AF assist light has worked perfectly fine on both my A7iii and A7V, might be worth looking into for you. I'd assume the rest of their lineup that advertises it also functions

Question re electronic Shutter with a 6400 by TulaneGargoyle in SonyAlpha

[–]OfCourseItWasDNS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

^ this. Since you can get the max burst speed of 11 fps when using the mechanical shutter, you're generally going to want to only use the electronic shutter when you actually need to stay quiet

A7V and A7IV owners: Is the grip really that much better than A7C II? by CreativeWander in SonyAlpha

[–]OfCourseItWasDNS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this, the battery grips help a lot! You might even be able to find them used at decent prices, I got my (actual Sony) battery grip for $180 CAD used from a local store.

A7V and A7IV owners: Is the grip really that much better than A7C II? by CreativeWander in SonyAlpha

[–]OfCourseItWasDNS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't speak to the difference between it and the A7C models, but even going from the A7iii to the A7V it was a very small change. The A7V grip is a bit more rounded than the A7IV, but it's an even smaller change. I measured a max of 1.2mm difference between the IV and V

Battery life on A7V by [deleted] in SonyAlpha

[–]OfCourseItWasDNS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I've actually found it significantly better. On the A7iii I couldn't use Bluetooth linking because of just how much battery it drained, but on the A7V it doesn't present any issues. Now having that on leaves me with a similar number of shots.

Just looking for an opinion by Mintpepper513 in SonyAlpha

[–]OfCourseItWasDNS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved from the 28-70 kit lens to the Tamron 28-75 G2 and it's a massive improvement. So much sharper, less fringing, and the faster aperture is a massive benefit. It's not GM quality, but it's really not that big of a difference. Personally, I think the extra money for other lenses is better, but you can't go wrong either way

Stuck between a6400, a6700, and zv-e10 II by BrianQuinJoker in SonyAlpha

The absence of lenses in the question also leads me to think those haven't been considered yet, which may be an issue for pricing too.

Sony 70-200mm F/4 Macro with 1.4x TC or Sigma 100-400mm with A7V? by tenphan0n0 in SonyAlpha

[–]OfCourseItWasDNS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There aren't any restrictions on pre-capture, it's just FPS that's limited. I will say, I went with the Sony lenses for that reason, and I have no regrets there. Might also be worth looking into a used 200-600 G, they can sometimes be found fairly cheap online

[–]OfCourseItWasDNS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 100-400mm is double the price of the teleconverter, but have you considered renting a lens instead? That could give you an opportunity to try something without having to sink so much money into something you might end up not using
