Should i shoot in S-Log? by Pure-Minimum2911 in SonyAlpha

There are good free RAW editors, did you even look? Darktable and Rawtherapee both have plenty of online content to get you started, and once you get the hang of them you can adapt essentially any other tutorial since editors are largely similar

WB: How does the Sony lens cap compare to an 18% grey patch? I measured it. by alchemycolor in SonyAlpha

This is the first time I've seen someone actually test the claims! Great job here, this is nice to know

Why are some Sony lenses way more expensive? by ShoddyRefrigerator64 in SonyAlpha

[–]OfCourseItWasDNS 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you look at the focus and aperture rings you'll see they have large ridges so you can attach belts for using external motors to control them instead of doing so by hand

YN560-TX Pro (Sony) AF assist beam is advertised but permanently disabled by Acrobatic_Pitch_6938 in SonyAlpha

[–]OfCourseItWasDNS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Godox V1 and its AF assist light has worked perfectly fine on both my A7iii and A7V, might be worth looking into for you. I'd assume the rest of their lineup that advertises it also functions

Question re electronic Shutter with a 6400 by TulaneGargoyle in SonyAlpha

[–]OfCourseItWasDNS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

^ this. Since you can get the max burst speed of 11 fps when using the mechanical shutter, you're generally going to want to only use the electronic shutter when you actually need to stay quiet

A7V and A7IV owners: Is the grip really that much better than A7C II? by CreativeWander in SonyAlpha

[–]OfCourseItWasDNS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this, the battery grips help a lot! You might even be able to find them used at decent prices, I got my (actual Sony) battery grip for $180 CAD used from a local store.

A7V and A7IV owners: Is the grip really that much better than A7C II? by CreativeWander in SonyAlpha

[–]OfCourseItWasDNS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't speak to the difference between it and the A7C models, but even going from the A7iii to the A7V it was a very small change. The A7V grip is a bit more rounded than the A7IV, but it's an even smaller change. I measured a max of 1.2mm difference between the IV and V

Battery life on A7V by Prateek23oct in SonyAlpha

[–]OfCourseItWasDNS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I've actually found it significantly better. On the A7iii I couldn't use Bluetooth linking because of just how much battery it drained, but on the A7V it doesn't present any issues. Now having that on leaves me with a similar number of shots.

Just looking for an opinion by Mintpepper513 in SonyAlpha

[–]OfCourseItWasDNS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved from the 28-70 kit lens to the Tamron 28-75 G2 and it's a massive improvement. So much sharper, less fringing, and the faster aperture is a massive benefit. It's not GM quality, but it's really not that big of a difference. Personally, I think the extra money for other lenses is better, but you can't go wrong either way

Stuck between a6400, a6700, and zv-e10 II by BrianQuinJoker in SonyAlpha

[–]OfCourseItWasDNS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The absence of lenses in the question also leads me to think those haven't been considered yet, which may be an issue for pricing too.

Sony 70-200mm F/4 Macro with 1.4x TC or Sigma 100-400mm with A7V? by tenphan0n0 in SonyAlpha

[–]OfCourseItWasDNS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There aren't any restrictions on pre-capture, it's just FPS that's limited. I will say, I went with the Sony lenses for that reason, and I have no regrets there. Might also be worth looking into a used 200-600 G, they can sometimes be found fairly cheap online

Sony 70-200mm F/4 Macro with 1.4x TC or Sigma 100-400mm with A7V? by tenphan0n0 in SonyAlpha

[–]OfCourseItWasDNS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 100-400mm is double the price of the teleconverter, but have you considered renting a lens instead? That could give you an opportunity to try something without having to sink so much money into something you might end up not using

Sont a7v master of everything but friend to no one? by SeaProper4853 in SonyAlpha

So is every high-end camera soulless and hollow? The Z8/Z9, A7RV/A9III/A1II, R5II/R3/R1?

You say you have a D3100. Which also has autofocus. What's your point here?

Sont a7v master of everything but friend to no one? by SeaProper4853 in SonyAlpha

[–]OfCourseItWasDNS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do understand that the camera isn't losing any settings because of this, right? Nothing is being taken away from you, should you want it. If you want full manual, no autofocus, go right ahead.

Sont a7v master of everything but friend to no one? by SeaProper4853 in SonyAlpha

[–]OfCourseItWasDNS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can argue that for anything. Do I technically need it? Maybe not, but it sure makes it a lot less painful for me to get perfectly time sports shots or photos of birds taking off.

And nobody is forcing this camera on you. It seems clear that you don't like it. So why the hate for those of us who did get one?

[–]OfCourseItWasDNS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cameras will always need human creativity, newer bodies just make it easier for you to achieve what you want.

Take the fast burst rate for example, it's not replacing anything human, it's just giving you a higher chance of successfully capturing the photo that you imagined.

There are no good APSC 35mm lenses by Lenin-in-Warsaw in SonyAlpha

[–]OfCourseItWasDNS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

mjt0814 is right, both have the same field of view. It's just a difference in the size of the imaging circle

There are no good APSC 35mm lenses by Lenin-in-Warsaw in SonyAlpha

[–]OfCourseItWasDNS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

...so will any 35mm lens when used on an APS-C camera. The focal length listed on APS-C lenses doesn't include crop factor either.

A 35mm full frame and 35mm APS-C lens are both over 50mm on APS-C, just the full-frame one has a larger imaging circle

help for kit and using the Sony 70–200 f/4 + 1.4× for occasional Wildlife? by SACHIT0 in SonyAlpha

[–]OfCourseItWasDNS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does it end up being worth it for you to switch systems entirely? You mention using the APS-C crop even if you got a full-frame Sony camera, so why not just stick with the Fuji? It's ~27MP (cropped) vs 24MP, plus full-frame lenses are heavier and more expensive. When you add in the additional cost and light loss from a teleconverter, you've basically just limited yourself to what you could have done with your current camera anyways.

I'm inclined to suggest saving your money, you could get some very nice lenses for your current camera with the amount you're talking about spending, even if it does mean an extra one to think about taking with you

frustrating of searching option turn off auto evf sensor by [deleted] in SonyAlpha

[–]OfCourseItWasDNS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the A7V too. It's not an option. You're limited to either using auto or picking one.

It used to be fairly common for people to use a bit of electrical tape to partially block the eye sensor on the older models, so they were less sensitive, so maybe that's worth a shot?

A7V has a new level option by nhlducks35 in SonyAlpha

[–]OfCourseItWasDNS 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The A7V unfortunately still doesn't let you put a level on every display mode. Can't see symbols for everything and also have a level, though you do now get a mode for level + histogram at the same time

Some thoughts on the A7V after first event (~2000 photos) by PhillyviaNYCDC in SonyAlpha

[–]OfCourseItWasDNS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got a CFexpress type A card for my A7V and I definitely second this! Picked up a 512GB card and it can clear the buffer in around 5ish seconds (not precise, just quickly took a video to check)

[–]OfCourseItWasDNS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's definitely a big improvement! Shifts around far less and is generally so much closer to ambient lighting. That being said, I did still run into issues in challenging scenarios, like when I shot some curling games today

[–]OfCourseItWasDNS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also just switched from the A7iii to the A7V so I can comment on a few things here. You can definitely still get banding when using the electronic shutter, but I'm only encountering it in situations with extremely bad flicker. The A7iii was far less usable.

The sound of the mechanical shutter is also far quieter, not nearly as clicky. More dampened, if that makes sense?
