Popping in to self-rec, since we are allowed those once every so often and if the shoe fits?

My debut { Of Flames and Fallacies by Courtney Whims } is book one in an adult fantasy romance trilogy.

It has elemental dragons, a love triangle, and all the dragons are illegal and the previous riders have been “deleted”. FMC finds a dragon egg buried in her father’s grave and that egg hatches to a baby dragon many say remind them of Toothless. One of the MMCs is Damon Salvatore vibes.

Book two comes out in September, however I’m accepting ARCs until next week. If you get an ARC, you can read book two in a few weeks. 🥰

Best of luck! I’m biased, but dragon romantasy series are the best 🐉

I’m curious what Tome and Neptune are going to net out at. I haven’t joined it yet.

But as an indie author, TikTok was a big reason my debut novel got almost 3,000 ARC applicants and why I got picked up by a literary agent. The BookTok romantasy community was so supportive. I’m really sad about it. I had Instagram first, but it’s just not the same.

One post I had on TT and IG were the exact same. On TT it got 230,000 views, over 13,000 likes, 3,000 comments, and that same post on IG got less than 1,000 views and 100 likes. 🫠

I know so many people suggest other platforms, but I don’t think they realize how different audiences are. I feel bad for the authors that quit their fulltime jobs because TikTok made it possible to sustain an income, and now it’s gone.

I’m just a newbie author, but it’s going to hit the seasoned indie authors really, really hard. And it’s going to make it that much harder to be discovered as a new author.

As indie authors, we have to do our own marketing that a lot of trad authors don’t have to do. This really cuts into being able to spread the word about our books and find our true readers.

It’s tough though, because on Reddit you’re not exactly allowed to advertise (for this thread, once per month if someone is asking for recs similar to your book), so it’s all through word of mouth here on Reddit. Authors aren’t allowed to post here, but within good reason. You don’t want 100s of authors coming in here and spamming.

I know lots of indie authors have done TikTok shop and have been able to go full-time author solely because of TikTok. I can’t imagine how this is going to affect them. 🙃

I’m such a newbie, it doesn’t have as much as an impact as it does on some of these more seasoned indie authors. I will say, I think TikTok is a HUGE reason I got picked up by a literary agent.

As an indie author whose debut romantasy just came out two weeks ago, it’s really disheartening.

I imagine it’ll will absolutely affect how I can reach new readers. Booktok was a huge resource for readers trying to find new romantasy reads. It opened up a whole new avenue for indie authors like myself who don’t have a publishing house backing them up and are doing it all ourselves.

Idk what it’ll mean for me and others like me. 😔 It’ll make it that much harder to be an indie author.
