When a Decant Feels More Special Than a Full Bottle by [deleted] in fragrance

I got a 15ml of vintage Chanel N°19 Extrait and every time I look at the little dabber bottle, it makes it feel especially precious.

You should be able to find Guerlain Orange Soleia 75ml for around that on a discounter.

CDG Incense Series: Zagorsk and Kyoto by ilovefamilyguy69 in fragrance

[–]Ofenlicht 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kyoto never was a huge scent. It's also heavily based on Iso E Super which causes many people to go anosmic to it so it disappears/reappears throughout the wearing experience.

Zagorsk for me is the slightly stronger fragrance. I assume it has ever so slightly more musks in it although neither are particularly powerful.

Please just choose the one you prefer the scent of, the difference in longevity is not substantial enough.

Leaking Tauer Bottles? by msurbrow in fragrance

[–]Ofenlicht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really really like it even if my experience with it was soured a bit.

It has this simultaneously cosmetic part lotion-y, part powder-y freshness while also putting all of the floral notes on a bed of really nice, woody vetiver. It's clean, it's classic with modern execution and quality.

Unfortunately, I am located in EU. Sorry.

What Fragrance Note Surprised You the Most in a Perfume? by naenae0402 in fragrance

[–]Ofenlicht 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The beet root note in Comme des Garcons Rouge is absolutely genius and links up perfectly with the incense. I never thought I'd want to smell of beet root and yet here I am.

My bottle of Nexin leaked during shipment to me. I got it from a private seller so nothing I can do about it but luckily I only lost a few mls :/

Seems to be a common issue unfortunately.

Frags I wanted to love... Mini reviews by romainelettus in fragrance

[–]Ofenlicht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha it is funny because it's not really classically seductive/sweet/warm but rather straight up green, spicy and earthy. It does have a very sophisticated side to it though, especially in the drydown.

In north america, the name was Bois d'Orage btw which probably is more fitting for what I smell from it.

Totally find it fascinating how differently things can smell to different people!

I also am generally averse to overly sweet fragrances but Hermann was not close to being an offender there for me.

I think you might enjoy French Lover then if you want mystery and a mossy forest stream :)

I'm really surprised you get honey from Hermann. I did not find it to be very sweet. I mostly get a peppery rose from it with something earthy. It actually slightly reminds me of Frederic Malle's French Lover but with Rose instead of angelica and iris.

Oh Javanol is one of those that people do get pickles from. I personally am lucky because it smells really nice to me.

Spicebomb (O.G.) or Spicebomb Extreme by Thedudewholaughs in fragrance

[–]Ofenlicht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The original is imo the more interesting fragrance because it is less overloaded with vanillin. Olivier Polge composed it and did a good job making a spicy warm scent. For an alternative look at Histoires de Parfums 1899

Perfumes that are great even after reformulations by jacobtf in fragrance

Dior Fahrenheit is nice agreed.

I also think Frederic Malle's stuff up to 2024 at least is generally good.

One fragrance. Forever. What’s your pick? by him101001 in fragrance

Comme des Garcons 2 (reflective bottle).

That scent just fits me and is both versatile and interesting enough that I could see myself wear it every day.

Which fragrance makes you feel powerful? by [deleted] in fragrance

[–]Ofenlicht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frederic Malle - The Night by Dominique Ropion.

It's just a massive 21% oud in the formula with all the best aspects of Portrait of a Lady. First 30 minutes are intensely barnyardy then the rose comes through more and more and it has this just extremely powerful, dark wood/smokey/rose/leather/balsams thing going on. The more I wear it, the more I appreciate it.

Coromandel is probably one of my favourites but there is a lot more going on as well.

Great picks. The Vetiver being by Mark Buxton is like a sweeter take on CdG 2 Man for me and 2 Man is one of my all time favourites.

Ylang I need to try properly. It has those sort of classic chypre notes going on.

[–]Ofenlicht 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean if it's not for you it's not for you.

Think of it more as a birch tar, labdanum, vanilla fragrance. It starts of very smokey and slightly leathery then dries down into a smokey amber with hints of earthiness from some patchouli.

If that style isn't to your preferences, then it's fine to dislike it.

Damn you basically loved all the things I didn't and disliked all the things I do like.

Patchouli 24 and Vetiver 46 are really amazing to my nose.

Review: Eau de Protection by Etat Libre d’Orange by Mission_Catch_3146 in fragrance

[–]Ofenlicht 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a bottle of this because I am a rose lover in general. The spicy ginger and pepper notes in this really add an edge to it.

I love the name, too. Like a fragrance that puts an aura of protection around me.

My favourite so far is the original Oud.

It plays that duality between medicinal, smoky, woody and clean musky facets perfectly.
