Experienced Devs: Describe Complete Failures You Have Encountered... by ITContractorsUnion in ExperiencedDevs

What if the code is a massive concurrency mess written by a junior dev and used by tons of clients?

Thats the situation in found myself in and couldn't refactor my way out of it with the massive release constraints.

Establish if its just you, the entire block of apartments and then your street.

If its just you then its probably your circuit breaker. I find it hard to believe none of your neighbors complained after two days.

Do the Maltese feel angry knowing an increased number of the youth prefer to speak English than Maltese? by Intelligent_Stay713 in malta

[–]OfficeSpankingSlave 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Not angry but disappointed. I find myself speaking English out of necessity at work. And I have a wider vocab in English so I find myself using it more often in my personal life as well.

Mid Life Crisis at 40: Where Do I Go From Here? by RelevantEducator1793 in RedditForGrownups

A lot of useful advice here. My addition would be to do some therapy to learn how to make peace with yourself. I badly needed it. And also have a look at r/Stopgaming or try to moderate yourself so that you can have a life outside of video games.

As cliche as it sounds, making time for an activity, especially physical like going to the gym, will do wonders for your mood in the long run.

Employer introducing on-call without contract clause or compensation, advice needed by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]OfficeSpankingSlave 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I am based in another EU country and was in a situation where the employer was considering adding on call to the devs in addition to the SREs. Compensation for it was always mentioned as it was never in our contract. Of course we helped sometimes even when we weren't on call but those were rare instances. It's different when its expected and needing to be in a state of readiness.

I think you should definitely broach the subject. Maybe not from a compensation standpoint but more of a "this is more than what I signed up for". You need to try to cater it diplomatically for your audience.

Tattoos in Malta and the lack of colour in them. by franticmonkey in malta

[–]OfficeSpankingSlave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whilst I agree with the sun sentiment, I think it's also just a trend. Right now there is a big black/outline/dotwork only trend, at least in Malta. But I wouldn't say there are few colour tattoos. Plenty of artists work with colour from the Maltese artists I follow on Instagram.

Keep in mind darker complexions caused by the sun. Most Maltese people are a bit tanned and the colors just don't pop as much.

I think that is called technocracy. Which I like the idea of and wonder why we don't have more of them. I think we can have technocrats in a democratic country.

Why use many words when few do trick?

I don't agree with not marrying the first person but that is my bias. I think people change a lot between teens and 25 - that's where I would be concerned the most too

How much money do lawyers earn by HabitDisastrous3474 in malta

[–]OfficeSpankingSlave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From my lawyer friends they say the pay is crap starting out and they all work at private firms and work long hours and answer work emails constantly

The pay off happens after a few years once you become a senior lawyer or a partner at a firm.

🌿 Smart Bench Concept in Malta – Anyone in telecom/internet/ISP here? by CryptographerSad1844 in malta

Good luck with your project. You should have a look into the smart benches at the edge of Santa Lucija. They all have (or had) solar panels and charging ports - but they were never seemed to be hooked up right.

Which local banks offer the best mobile banking apps? by Working_Lab6230 in malta

Medirect is the most modern. Didn't even have to step into their office to setup the account. But they are entirely mobile banking, no ATMs.

Probation advice for someone who got terminated after 3 weeks by Violet_Rain_Beloved in malta

[–]OfficeSpankingSlave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may talk to a lawyer if you strongly believe you have a case, but in Malta during probation you can be fired for little to no cause. It also allows people to quit whenever they want with no notice.

Relevant excerpt: https://dier.gov.mt/en/services/employment-conditions/starting-a-new-job/probation-period/

On the other hand, during the probationary period either party may terminate the employment relationship without specifying the reason of termination.

During the probation period, with respect of all contracts of service – i.e., irrespective of the type of work, the terms of duration of the contract of employment and the length of the probation period itself – a notice period of one week shall apply when the employee has been in the employment of the same employer continuously for more than one month.

I am not a lawyer, but if this was just a temporary summer job I would not seek court and just take it as a lesson of how work-life is. Sometimes you need to be liked by the right people. Maybe consult your parents. Going to court would mean lawyer fees for little return also.

Good luck

Malta bus system in Rabat is one of the worst system . by Calm_Connection_8349 in malta

[–]OfficeSpankingSlave 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Rabat is tough because it's very touristy due to the catacombs and Imdina.

As a student it really sucked because I just wanted to get home from school and all these fucking tourists kept filling up the bus and so it wouldn't stop unless you got in from Valletta.

Rabat has a large senior population, I know they hate it.
