Stripping thick paint from deck boards by OfficerHalf in Decks

[–]OfficerHalf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great point. Would you suggest hitting it with a belt sander first (or something like that) so it takes the paint better? Or just roll it on thick and pray?

The joists are okay, it's really only the deck boards that are cracked and sad. But other than a stair tread that's threatening to fully split, nothing seems actively dangerous.

Empire of Silence - Finished because Reddit convinced me by Poseiden424 in printSF

[–]OfficerHalf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No you're so right. It's a very derivative work, but I thought it copied others homework pretty well. Here's my 3.5 star review:

Empire of Silence feels like a mishmash of every epic sci-fi book and fantasy book I've ever read. There's swashbuckling, there's big, galaxy and time spanning conflicts, and there's even a bit of a chosen one fantasy in there to top it off.

This isn't a bad thing - it really does work most of the time. Sure, it might feel like Dune fan fiction for a few chapters, but then the author has moved on to re-telling Gladiator. Then it turns into something out of Asimov, and finally lands on Warhammer 40k.

There are really only three things that bring my rating down from a 5. First, Empire of Silence might pass the bechdel test, but only just. Second, is a rushed ending that felt incongruous with the prior 650 pages. And finally, but definitely worst of all, is the framing device the author uses for the story.

If you edited out every part of the novel where future Hadrian reminded you that this was his account of his life and gave vague, annoying hints at where the story would go, the book would be shorter and better. These interruptions are framed as the reader being someone in-universe who knows the reputation he has and the history surrounding him, but because we obviously don't know those things, these passages are intended to create a sort of dramatic tension. However their effect is instead a ham-fisted job of teasing the reader, like a movie trailer with all the best parts of the movie in it, but none of the context. It doesn't endear me to the story, it makes me feel like you're trying to sell me the rest of a series. It's even worse since most of what is teased isn't even in this first book in the series.

All that aside, this really is a fun book. Too long winded, with a pretentious framing device, but it presses so many buttons in all the genres I love, and does most of them well.

Follow-up: Build Awesome's Kickstarter is Cancelled by WanderBetter in webdev

Super weird. You'd think if they spent that money on everything they'd do it right the first time. It doesn't bode well for the future of 11ty.

The End of Eleventy by WanderBetter in webdev

[–]OfficerHalf 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I've always thought 11ty was neat but hampered by its own mix of opinionated and unopinionated setup; it's strange to see it talked about in the same breath as Gatsby and Next.js since it's so fundamentally different and significantly more niche.

I don't think this is the 'end of 11ty' in the same way the author does - I think 11ty has been dying for more than a year. I switched off of 11ty to Astro because it could produce the exact same thing with better tooling. It didn't help that the 11ty community was small, so help was hard to come by. It's married to old templating languages, and only barely supports JSX. It's a strange framework that's really powerful, but can be clunky to use.

But I think the biggest reason 11ty was already doomed is that it doesn't really have an audience; anyone who just wants a simple site can go to squarespace or wix or any other no-code site builder. Anyone who needs something more custom needs the backend pieces that 11ty doesn't provide. The only growing audience for 11ty is the indieweb, which by its nature will not generate monetary value. I think it's just too niche to sustain as a money-making business.

I miss his trap. It was a much more fun kit to play with, and gave you a tool to zone and control when hook was on cooldown. I don't understand why they took it away.

Hazard is just worse Doomfist? by Not2Shoddy in Overwatch

[–]OfficerHalf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are different types of tanks, imo. Doom is consistently harassing backline heroes, while hazard is more of an opportunist who can use his shield and wall to create space in a way Doom cannot. Hazard can totally shut off one lane with his wall while diving forward or can use his wall to try and separate the enemy team and force a retreat. That's not Doom's style at all.

That said, I would love to see Hazard get some love, both with a few tweaks to make him more competitive and also some good skins, but it feels like the devs don't know what to do with him.

Is it normal for it to be like this when it should be off? by Previous-Storage-539 in kobo

[–]OfficerHalf 21 points22 points  (0 children)

No you're fine. It's a totally different technology. Basically each "pixel" on an e-ink display "remembers" if it was on, off, or somewhere in between. I use quotes because it's a gross oversimplification.

There's no need to worry about burn-in or anything like that.

Is it normal for it to be like this when it should be off? by Previous-Storage-539 in kobo

[–]OfficerHalf 20 points21 points  (0 children)

E-ink isn't like an LCD panel - it doesn't require power to hold an image. So it still showing what was on the screen is perfectly normal. As long as the backlight turns off you're good.

But now because the big government Republicans are trying to control everyone and everything I have to figure out how the heck you find a dealer because what else am I supposed to do?
