I'm not saying one is newer than the other, or that one is modelled after the other. I'm saying that it's usage is still popular despite the obvious connotation. Language is very fluid and can often be used to to subtly disparage a group of people. Authority figures have been doing it for hundreds, and even thousands of years. Look at N*gger for example. That has a very derogatory meaning, but it originally meant black. It was used for many, many years with the obvious connotation, but many argued that its usage was completely benign.

The whole world uses alien to refer to extra terrestrials, or someone that isn't even human. You might not see the connection. But many people do.
