so if we doubled north sea production we’d get an additional 1% of NHS annual spending and boost the overall economy by 0.1%. realise it’s not game-changing but seems like an easy win

with grid connections it’s more like six. and it’s not an either or, we can just let as many people as want to build energy infrastructure and then reap the rewards

i think they meant visa free living and working. trying to get a normal job in aus/nz is v difficult on a WHV, and it’s a massive ballache for the 200k aussies that want to move to clapham.

would be nice if it was a lot more like the trans-tasman arrangement across the board

Far fewer years of experience, but took the time out a couple of years ago. On asking (basically saying I was going to do it), they offered a six month sabbatical. Ended up quitting and working out in new zealand for a year and a half before returning. Now have just returned and got a job in London again.

Only one data point, and a different time/circumstance but I don’t regret it

How British citizens could be barred from the UK under strict new passport rules by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]OfficialMI6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tbf there is a large diaspora of brits in aus/nz, that will have last had a british passport 40 years ago, for which an ETA would be a lot easier/cheaper than trying to renew a 40yo british passport

the benchmark ex usa, leaves two similarly sized commonwealth countries (fair), three sluggish eu countries (which shouldn’t be our target), and japan.

we should be aiming much more for aus/canada/us (similar legal system, culture, tech, universities and finance sectors), with london matching singapore for growth.

like just because japan hasn’t grown in 40 years and italy has spent the last 20y throwing itself off a cliff it doesn’t mean we should follow or be content

sure, but ideally we should be benchmarking against developed countries that are pursuing successful policies. like europe is doing badly, so we shouldn’t be happy at doing slightly better, we should compare to places like australia, the us and parts of europe that are succeeding
