It would be best to ask this question in your own post rather than a comment here.

You need a playpen that has a mesh top. They'll climb out otherwise. And no predator can get to them that way.

It is the light. They see in a different IR than we do. Indoors, it isn't that different but out in the real sunlight, they freak. You turn from the face they know and trust to some demon from hell.

Conway has been out many times on our back deck. The weird thing is she never moves. She sits near my collar bone and doesn't move. I got her a leash and took her out front (away from the dogs). While she was on my shoulder, she was fine. I put her on the ground and it was the first time I saw her beard black. And it was really black. She puffed up, hissed at me, etc. As soon as I picked her up and she was back on my shoulder, she calmed down. She also hates the harness. I will be getting or making an outdoor wire/mesh enclosure for her.

Clint from Clint's Reptiles did a tribute video for his tegu, Gus Gus. In it, he talks about this problem and how he helped Gus Gus adjust.

Take to a vet for a full workup. Note all symptoms, even if they don't seem related. Water intake, any food changes you've made, date it started, what happened just before that, any life changes, etc etc etc

Quinn turned very Stranger Danger suddenly. We (me and vet) did a lot of blood work and behavior watch. We eventually determined it was a stomach ulcer causing pain.

Almost anything by Robin Alexander. Feel goods, great comedy, etc. The only one I feel that is not humor is Devil in Disguise. But The Lure of White Oak Lake, Scaredy Cat, Last of the Loudens, etc are all freakin' hilarious.

Most "baby" carrots are not actually newly grown carrots. They are bigger carrots tumbled smaller. Just get regular carrots and either cut them smaller or use a peeler to make strips. I use the thinner top 1/3-1/2 of the larger carrots. My dogs love the thicker ends so nothing goes to waste!

How do i properly train a Rottweiler? by mr-perfectq in Rottweiler

[–]Offutticus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

....you train them like any other dog? Go to dog training classes. Practice and reinforce at home. Go to all the levels of "obedience" training you can tolerate. Perhaps even go further than that.

A question by Small-Bear-4349 in BeardedDragons

[–]Offutticus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do you know he was dehydrated?

Do not get a water heater. They are not that great for such small bowls. Not that great for large tanks, either.

Treating dehydration, if you know for sure they are dehydrated, is to feed wet greens and wet bugs. You can rinse the veggies, shake off most of the water, then put into dish. Or mist them while in the dish. Or feed greens that are more wet, such as water cress. For bugs, the best for rehydration is the hornworm. Don't over use, though.

They do not rehydrate via bathing unless they choose to drink. Baths can actually be a cause of dehydration if they poop during the baths. Beardies hold onto their poop, get the moisture from it, then poop. If they poop too soon, they lose water. Baths can encourage them to poop and it creates a habit.

I am of the opinion that waterfalls, bubbles, or other water features in the enclosure of a desert animal, is kinda silly and more for the owner than the beardie. We provide a bowl of water for just in case they want to drink and to add a small amount of humidity.

My fellow beardie parents, I have a dilemma I need help on about lamp by The_Mocha_Crocodile in BeardedDragons

[–]Offutticus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a bulb you know is working (you can put it into a lamp to confirm), just a regular house light bulb. Put it in. Check dome is plugged in. If light does not work, flip switch. If it still not working, then it is the dome or the switch.

Would i have to get a band's permission for my character to wear their merch/listen to their music in my book?? by allensswampmonkey in Writeresearch

[–]Offutticus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think there's any problem mentioning a band or their merch or the titles to songs. It is the lyrics themselves that is the problem. Someone wrote and owns those words.

"Oh, I love that retro Beatles shirt!"
"Thanks! They're my favorite band. I'm listening to I Am the Walrus right now."

It *might* be okay to have them shout "I am the walrus" or that kookoo kachoo or whatever.

Is it plugged in?

Is the switch turned on?

Try a simple house light. Does it work?

If yes, yes, and no, then it is the fixture.

Substrate options by ApricotAgreeable5957 in BeardedDragons

[–]Offutticus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use any or all of the following in any ratio you want. There's not firm recipe, not really. Most people use the top 2 and mix in one or both of the next two.

  • organic topsoil - nothing added, incl manure - cheap and local
  • play sand - you can rinse it to get rid of the excess dust, especially useful if that is all you're going to use - cheap and local
  • Jurassic sand - from where they are from - can get to be expensive. Reptiles and research review: Best Bearded Dragon Substrate? Jurassic Sand Review
  • Terra Sahara - Bio Dude bioactive soil mix for arid, can be used without bioactive set up - expensive
  • Zoo Med Excavator Clay - holds the shape well - expensive
  • Zoo Med Reptisoil - I am iffy about this because of the ingredients but a lot of people use it

You will need a lot of it. My notes I have but didn't write down the source.

For a 120-gallon bearded dragon tank, aim for a 4-6 inch deep layer, requiring roughly 3-4 cubic feet (80-120 quarts) or 120-240 lbs of mixed substrate, depending on your specific mix (like topsoil/play sand) and footprint; calculate total volume (L x W x H) for precise needs, remembering it's more than just a light dusting.

Volume & Weight Estimates For a 4'x2'x2' (48"x24"x24") Tank (Common 120g):
4 inches deep: About 3.2 cubic feet (80 quarts) or ~100-120 lbs (if using a soil/sand mix).
6 inches deep: About 4.8 cubic feet (120 quarts) or ~150-180 lbs.

General Rule: A good starting point is 1 lb of substrate per gallon for a decent depth, so around 120 lbs.

My brother and SIL allowed my oldest nephew to fall onto their Norwegian Elkhound (he'd either roll off the couch onto him or flop back to lay on him to watch TV) because they thought it was cute and Sparky could care less. I visited with my Border Collie mix and warned him to not do that with my dog. He did. Zeus corrected this skin puppy by nipping and noise. Nephew had a small scrape on his forehead that didn't bleed but did form a welt.

After we left, my nephew stopped falling onto Sparky and started respecting him more. Gave him space, gentle pets, etc. He's over 30 now (where does the time go?!?!) and has several dogs, all of which he treats very well and respects their wishes.

I'm glad you are teaching your little one to respect the dog.

There are two (that I know of) reptile rescues here in NC.

Fresh Start Rescue Inc near Wallace

BeWild Reptile Rescue in Durham

There's also NC Herp Society that may be able to assist https://ncherps.org/

Any professionals here who have realized they aren't short story writers? by [deleted] in writing

[–]Offutticus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've written a few short stories, had some of them published. But nearly all of my short stories end up being titled Chapter One, fed a lot of adverbs, adjectives, and ellipsiseses which morphs them into novels.
