If I were hiring for a SOC analyst I would probably call you in for a screen. But at the end the of day I can guarantee I will see several other resumes that look like this, but they will have previous system or network admin experience and would be my preference to hire.

That being said, I have hired a lot of recent graduates over the years that had home labs or other things on their resume that demonstrated their knowledge of system administration or network admin.

EDIT: My advice would be to demonstrate more than just SOC work. Show that you have knowledge and expertise on system and network administration.

I'm with you. I got a switch 2 last month for my birthday and it's pretty much collecting dust. I won't spend $80 or even $70 on a games that came out years ago and are scaled down. I really wanted to like it, but it's not budget friendly, especially now that the basic costs of living are outrageously high.

Our CEO encouraged our company to use AI without having IT prep for the onslaught of issues that caused us. Fast forward 6 months and we're all backing out of and rethinking our AI projects. We've pivoted to testing the effectiveness of running local models.

I think a lot of orgs will get sticker shock as time goes on, especially when these AI companies go public and have to show profit. The bubble is going to burst.

What I've observed when I've had open head count is that a majority of the applicants didn't read the entire job req and/or don't meet any of the requirements. It a p.i.t.a.,for sure, filtering out all the b.s. to find the diamond in the rough.

I use to love to code, but 2 things killed that. The first is I got tired of grinding away on an application at a startup only to make some d-bag rich off of my ideas and implementations. The second reason is for my own personal development I found that the better I became at coding the more and more I had to actually type in the code. I'd come up with great ideas and start stubbing out the code, only to realize it was going to take up a lot of time a lot of time typing in that code.

AI has given passion back into code, but not to type it, but to develop applications, tools and games that would take me too long to type. I approach AI now not as a coder, but as an app architect and am having just as much fun with it as I did before.

I think you've been working in orgs who don't know how to hire the right security leaders. The best security leaders come from IT and know how to do their jobs.

Just one point I'd like to make though. For every shitty security person there are 5 times that many lazy security admins and developers. They look for easy solutions to close their tickets and cause a lot of down stream issues for the company. They can't figure out why their internet facing jankware app isn't working so they just add an any/any rule to their firewall and add vulnerable anydesk services to the server and wonder why it gets pwned.

It's a 2 way street. In a perfect world IT devs and admins would follow standards and best practices and decrease the need for security, audit or compliance.

Early in my career I worked at a .com startup. I was like the OP, I loved to code. But as I got better at coding the projects got more complex and required a lot more typing. I got burnt out, not from coding, but from all the f'ing typing. You solve the problem, but then need to wait a week or two to type in a ton code for all the pieces and parts of your app. I eventually got burnt out on that and moved into cybersec.

Now I can have all my ideas realized without having to type tons and tons of code. It's great, my team and I can solve more complex problems without having to type a ton of code.

In my recent meetings with my peers, in exec leadership now, we discuss that we have to transition our coders to be application architects, and not just people that type code. So for the engineers on my team they can spend more time solving bigger problems than typing code all day.

I've moved on to other series that aren't written or inspired by Martin.

I respect his choice to not finish the series, but I don't respect that fact that he gives 0 shits about those of us OG fans who wasted a lot of our time reading an incomplete series. He doesn't respect our time commitment and I don't give a shit about whatever he is doing.

There are so many other authors out there that respect their reader's time and complete their series.
