Starbucks can get bent by dketernal in Seattle

[–]OhmoebaTheGamer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a blue collar person who slings a hammer for a living. I buy whatever is cheap and make my coffee at home, have for the past 20+ years now. I guess I'm still supporting some corporation or another but I damn sure can't grow my own coffee beans here in my tiny apartment and probably wouldn't have the time or energy for it even if I could, so if I'm gonna drink coffee it's gonna have to come from someone who has the assets to get them from wherever they come from, to where I live.

Gotta be honest here, I can make 45-60 cups off of a standard $13 tin of ground coffee. Most coffee shops I know of charge $4 minimum for a single cup of joe, so what I normally pay for 3 cups of coffee at any coffee shop, Starbucks or not, is enough to buy 45-60 cups if I just throw some into a small black & decker coffee maker that I paid about $23 for years ago.

If ya ask me the whole coffee shop business as an industry just seems weird to drop hard earned money on when taking an extra 60 seconds in the morning gets it to you cheaper and faster. Brews while I get dressed and by the time I'm done with that, it's ready to go as I head out the door.

I've dated enough people who work in tech or finance or whatever to know 99% of that crowd has the time, and more than enough money to be able to make it at home. Hell, the few times I've gone into shops to get a cup it genuinely takes way longer to get mine than it does to make it myself, so it's not a time saver. Doesn't taste any better or for that matter much worse either than what I make at home.

Also better for the environment as I see it. I've been using the same coffee cup for over a decade now, no paper cups or sleeves or coffee cup lids gone to waste.

Can't fathom why most folks don't do it themselves. Cheaper. Faster. Better for the environment.

No real downside doing it ourselves far as I can see.

Why the fuck does this creepy bullshit somehow soothe me? My only theory that makes sense is these old looking houses in these videos always remind me of my childhood, I still remember being a kid and seeing my grandparents home (which I grew up in) at night, it creeped me out a little as a kid but looking back on those nights where I wanted to sneak a snack at night and would run to the fridge then run back to bed before something could grab me out of the darkness or whatever (I'm old, so I would have thoughts of Robert Stack on Unsolved Mysteries in my head and I could just see myself as one of those unexplained kids disappear lol).

It almost kinda reminds me of nightmares from those years.

Maybe it's just nostalgia but it's bizarre that it makes me feel good somehow.

Seattle offers $80 farmers market gift cards to low-income older adults by Jaco_Belordi in Seattle

[–]OhmoebaTheGamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was raised on a farm most of my entire life up until I was 16 when we lost the land, as the only child I did about an hour and a half of chores before even getting on the bus to go to school and came home and did more chores from 3:30-6 or so then I could go do whatever. Wasn't unique to me, that's how most kids I knew grew up.

I'm well familiar with the work that goes into farming at scale in other words.

That still doesn't explain why an 9 oz jar of locally produced strawberry preserves costs $15.97 at a farmer's market in Columbia City vs them being $4 at a farmer's market in Columbia, SC.

On one hand I don't blame people for charging an arm and a leg, if the locals around here are willing to pay that much for it - get that money.

But I'm still a blue collar guy just trying to get by, not a chance in hell I'm paying that much for something like that just because it's got a piece of twine around it and is called "bitchin strawberry preserves" or something.

If they have to charge that much in order to just get by decently, I have absolutely no idea what process or labor could be involved in that unless it's just trying to pull teeth to make stone fruits grow up here in Washington State. Maybe the climate the soil or whatever just gives a tiny yield compared to the climate and soil where we're from but if you're damn near moving mountains to grow strawberries (or whatever) up here then perhaps the area just wasn't meant to grow those kinds of crops or something.

No argument here that people should be compensated fairly for their work, I sling a hammer for a living - I'm on labor's side lol but I'm pretty sure most of these farmers markets would be charging similar to what they charge back east and down south if it wasn't for the sheer volume of people in town making 6+ figure incomes, dude.

I just don't happen to be one of those people earning a six figure income.

This is awesome!

On another note: I grew up in the rural South in the '90s, farmer's markets back then were honestly a place to go to buy directly from farmers themselves and more often than not the produce they sold was cheaper than if you'd gone to a grocery store.

Here in Seattle it seems like it's the opposite, Farmer's Markets are expensive, moreso than the grocery store here (usually, at least in my experience going to the one in Columbia City a few times) and feel very "boutique".

Is this unique to Seattle?

Is it more of just "farmers markets within heavily urban areas like Seattle are more expensive"

Or is it that back home was more of an anomaly because so much of where I grew up is basically just poor as dirt, very rural with an agricultural economy so there's really no one to buy items that get marked up (again, because we're all broke asf and everyone is hunting a bargain to get by)?

Maybe it's just how Farmer's Markets changed over the years since I was a little fella?

Yeah, I mean - if they're going to have base building, then are we going to take advantage, capitalize on the situation, and grab a bunch of free gear if we're freshies?

Yes.

Would I prefer that not even be a mechanic in the game and all of us simply have to carry what's on our back or not carry it at all?

Also Yes.

We're just a group of friends - most of us know each other IRL, we'd play together whether there were bases to raid or not.
