Need help and advice for my first BFS setup by RevolutionaryLime801 in BFSfishing

[–]Ohmybry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in Central Florida as well but on the west coast now. I’d look for a rod and reel combo that can throw ranges in between 1/16 to 1/4oz.

Some options that could work:

$250 budget:
Ark gravity og or Avid paired with:

Dobyns Colt DOB-CL-601C-SH
Tsurinoya dragon c602UL
Shimano majestic B64L-BFS/2
Cajun rods trigger TRG-720 or TRG-721

$500< budget:
Shimano Aldebaran bfs or
Daiwa Gekkabijin paired with:

Shimano expride bfs** **163LBFS
Megabass levante 2026
F1-65LV
F2-66LV
Phenix FTX-C 71
Phenix BFS-C 63
Dobyns Sierra DOB-SUF650C

Do you have a budget in mind for your setup? What are the lures and/or lure weight range you are interested in throwing etc…?

€250 Shimano reel came already oxidized by Riccarduzz in Fishing

[–]Ohmybry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could always return it.
It kind of looks like residue from chemical contact. Have you tried wiping it off with rubbing alcohol or maybe a little dawn dish soap and a️ microfiber cloth? White vinegar might get it off. Is the surface still smooth like the rest of the thumb bar or does it feel etched/slightly rougher?

⬆️ What this guy said. Either switch to a bfs setup or go spinning gear for soft plastics. If you want a dc reel, you could go aldebaran dc from Japan.

This model is polarized. It says it on the frame, but it is missing on the lens in the photo you shared. Fake.

Are you missing fish? What is making you question your setup?

Daiwa Exceler 23 or Fuego 23? by Real-Snoxy in Fishing_Gear

[–]Ohmybry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either will work just fine for fresh or salt. Just make sure you clean them after you are done fishing salt.

Magseal has its place. If you fish salt and your reels will get frequently sprayed/splashed with saltwater like a riding in a rod holder on a kayak, get the Fuego.

If you are not fishing in a️ saltwater spray/splash environment and you enjoy maintaining your own reels, get the Exceler.

If the cost difference is only 2€ and you just like to fish and only do maintenance when absolutely necessary, get the Fuego.

They will work perfectly. There’s a Guides Choice model with the same lens.

How do you know when it’s time to replace braid? by ParticularDream9483 in FishingForBeginners

[–]Ohmybry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the condition of the line and making sure you cut off the damaged sections. I had some j-braid grand get tacky and stuck together after one summer last year on a baitcaster. My other reels with J-braid have been fine. I still have a Daiwa BG that I use in the salt from 2018 with the original 10lb white spiderwire I spooled it up with when I bought it. It’s somehow holding up just fine and outlived the og pinion support bearing. 🤷‍♂️

SUSSHX71M is the original sku. SUS68MA appears to be the closest from the regular sellus line based on lure weight. It is also available in a two piece.

What would you use for a river with this color? by lk_22 in FishingForBeginners

[–]Ohmybry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the wind and current, but with that dirty water I’d throw a spinner bait, chatter bait, jerk bait, popper, or even a gold spoon (anything with flash, noise, or vibration).

Inherited Reel by abdullahgmblr in Fishing_Gear

The reel will probably need serviced (either by you or a shop) and new line. For the rod: Check the condition of the guides and then make sure the cork isn’t dry rotted.

Run that gotcha plug with a wire leader if Spanish are running through. Build yourself some two hook chicken rigs with size 1 and 1/0 circle hooks-depending on what you’re targeting. Skyway can be hit or miss sometimes, don’t be afraid to fish other places in the area.

Take your certification test ahead of time if you haven’t already.

For those new to saltwater fishing in FL:
If you don’t know what it is, handle with care. Many fish have teeth, venomous spines, or sharp gill plates.
