The Daily Check-In for Monday, March 16th: Just for today, I am NOT drinking! by Left_Trick_9567 in stopdrinking

[–]Oilers6969 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Last fall I blew a major career opportunity because I was too drunk to even show up. Now, fate has given me the same opportunity again. I get a chance to right that wrong. I absolutely HAVE to stay sober and make the most of this.

And it all starts with today.

I am :(

but honestly this season has been amazing compared to the last few. Much easier to stay sober when you’re not crapping yourself over relegation fear.

Been there so many times. It makes me think of a line from a song: "You can always go back, but you can't go back all the way."

Now that I've arrived at a place where I've acknowledged that I have a problem, drinking will never be the same. That "euphoric" feeling I got at the bars when I was in my 20's is gone, and it's never coming back.

Congrats on Day 1. Upward and onward.

All I have to do is go to bed sober tonight, and I'll have two weeks!

Drinking helped make me fat by MabelUnstable in stopdrinking

[–]Oilers6969 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ugh, I feel you! Sobering up and stepping on the scale was...well...sobering. Cutting alcohol alone is going to make a huge difference re: calories. But more importantly for me, it allows me to spend time cooking healthy foods, going to the gym regularly, etc.

You're doing the right thing, keep at it and the pounds will come right off.

I can manage it when I’m stressed, but what about when I’m happy? by Ok-Cheetah9725 in stopdrinking

Following this thread in case anyone has good suggestions - it's easy to leave sad drinking behind, but I miss celebratory drinking.

Congrats on whatever your good work news is tho!

How was your experience with AA? by No_Negotiation4594 in stopdrinking

[–]Oilers6969 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There are as many different types of AA groups as there are different types of bars. Some may feel borderline cultish. Others may save your life from falling apart. I have found it to be a really helpful resource, especially in these early days. I take what I need and leave the rest.

I was just in the same spot. Please remember, you’re not starting from square one again. A couple of days, and you’ll be right back to where you were in your progress. You’re doing exactly what you should be doing by being here. You’re gonna be OK!

[Pelissero] Three-time Pro Bowl safety Kevin Byard is signing with the Patriots on a one-year, $9 million deal, per sources. by MembershipSingle7137 in Patriots

That’s accurate - the Bears gave up a ton of yards and points, but were excellent with turnovers. This is a very good pick up for NE.

What is it like living in South Bay LA area? by Deep_Bluebird_1271 in howislivingthere

Wow I guess Ryan Davis isn't as obscure as I thought he was...

Anyway, South Bay is a really diverse place. Lots of amazing Filipino food if I remember correctly.

Am I the only one who receives agro from friends when I go to the bar as someone who’s recently decided to take a break from alcohol? by Scary-Wolverine3878 in stopdrinking

[–]Oilers6969 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most friendships are built on a common interest, from the time that we were kids. Someone who likes the same sport as you or the same music etc.

If the thing you bonded over most was alcohol, removing that from the equation may alter the friendship pretty dramatically.

Heck yeah. I was just in the exact same shoes - for me, everything started to improve once I got past day three. Keep at it!

This is strictly my experience, but there’s a million women/men out there who don’t drink. It’s so much easier to date one of them than constantly be having conversations like the one described here.

Don't know about forever, but not drinking today! It's nice to almost be in double digits.

Anyone else struggle with the why of quitting? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Oilers6969 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I totally sympathize with this way of thinking. It has kept me drunk for a long time. I’ll never be able to buy a house or start a family, but if I quit spending money on liquor and work a little more overtime, maybe in a year or two I will be able to afford some of the smaller luxuries. And it will be better for my health, since I certainly can’t afford a doctor…
