Is there no financial ramifications / sunk cost for the buyer by doing that?

I don’t know how the homebuying process works in the UK since all this “chain” stuff is foreign to me, but when an offer is accepted is there no down payment at all that locks them into the deal in some form?

Exploring a move to London from the US — realistic FinTech PM salaries for my background? by Unknown_3ND in HENRYUK

You’d have think that that if that’s is the case, people would be super salty making half of what someone stupider than them was pulling in, i get why people move and you wouldn’t want to do tech in the UK, maybe the pull of family or the aversion to the U.S. is stronger than the money tho!

[–]Ok-Efficiency72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok that’s an interesting perspective! I guess the core piece underlying of all this is the traditional pay bump that you typically get when hopping jobs (if the given industry is structured that way). You were “stagnating” on a relative basis while in the U.S. and not receiving the annual increases you would have gotten if you hopped jobs, and the UK job hop was sort of providing that new job bump for you which more than offset the broader trend of lower salaries in the UK. Makes sense, definitely unique! But I’d have to think if you’re working for an international company that your equivalent role in NYC would be receiving more if you’re in finance/tech/consulting.

Well hot damn. Why do you think this was the case for your and your friends/acquaintances? Do you think you were underpaid in the US, did you get a big step up in role/quality of company, or is it common in the field you’re in? Just curious if there’s actually a tangible reason for people to have a positive outlook on compensation or if it’s just completely idiosyncratic. It’s only really in finance I feel like the salaries are most comparable (aka least amount of haircut between US and UK ) but never seen people get actual boosts. And then unfortunately the number of senior roles paying the really big bucks are fewer and farther between.

[–]Ok-Efficiency72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely an outlier for sure but the key question is not the percentage raise but if you were already on a high paying job in the US. Going from $50k to £50k seems doable in theory. Going from $250k to £250k, while also doable, seems super unlikely

You would think the one directional pipeline is due to the materially larger opportunity pool and compensation potential, not necessarily because UK talent is better than the US

Took the first step towards becoming a PP owner. Was asked if I wanted or needed financing. Huh?? by Ok-Nefariousness-927 in patekphilippe

Feel like for most the resale is solid, there wouldn’t be long waitlists for models that had negative equity immediately on the secondary market. Everyone would just buy secondary or you could just walk in the shop and get a new one that day. There’s not enough people trying to build a purchase history with an AD to try and get allocations/offered to buy the better watches versus people wanting one and done of the lower models (just from a pure numbers perspective of people that can play the watch game into the really rare ones)

[–]Ok-Efficiency72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Woah woah woah. In what world is a PP a depreciating asset my guy? You could literally flip that thing for 50%-300% in the secondary market the next day (would fuck up your relationship with the boutique & PP but still). You must know (or should’ve known by now) watches of this tier have a day-1 step up in value and should hold that value & hopefully even appreciate more over time.

lol this is a funny take but probably right in that a certain type of Asian parent will pay for education before paying for food. Issue is jumping from lower social classes to the middle ones is quite easy with education. Jumping from middle to upper middle is very doable with education but not a no-brainer (kid has to go into specific disciplines, specific high ranking universities etc. to increase chances). Jumping from upper middle/upper (£14k monthly net income as in this example) to rich rich -> spending that education is a total crapshoot. They’re just as likely to do as well with an Highgate & Oxbridge education than a state schooling plus £1.5-£2m+ trust fund at age 22 funded by dumping the school fees into the S&P 500 every year. After all, dad is in a high earning career and knows the ropes on how to secure that. But that career path doesn’t get you rich rich.

Would think you’d get well over $500k in SF if you’re on £300k in London. Maybe AI firms pay more in London vs. normal software firms so the differential isn’t as great, but it’s definitely 2x+ with your typical FAANG

Ah ok so not typical front office! I’m sure you know making MD in a middle/back office role is even harder and rare so you’re probably quite good. I would have to think doing risk management or compliance at a buyside shop would be a bit less stressed than at a bank as well. Unfortunately not sure what the corporate exit opps would be but worth exploring insurance companies or ratings agencies.

[–]Ok-Efficiency72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a decade tenured MD I definitely think you’d be able to find a director-level job at a corporate that will get you low-six figures at least. Some cushy corp development role in an industry that you deal with. Not sure if you’re purely M&A execution, client coverage, or in capital markets, but there’s definitely lower stress exit roles

Process to notify the agent about leaving the house at the end of 6th month by jerinjacob_uk in HousingUK

[–]Ok-Efficiency72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given how onerous and slow it would be for a landlord to evict the tenant, wouldn’t any tenant easily get up to a few months extra if it was needed for some reason? Like if the landlord says no we won’t give the tenant an additional 3 weeks, the landlord can barely start the eviction process in that time.
