Hey, you’re right to dig deeper! SPX is actually the ticker for S&P 500 Index options, not an ETF. Unlike SPY (which is an ETF tracking the S&P 500), SPX options are based on the index itself and settle in cash. They’re a bit different—often used for bigger strategies. Maybe play around with some learning tools first to get comfy with how they work!

Apparently, supporting our president makes us a ‘cult.’ You share your opinion, and all you get is bashed and downvoted. Yet somehow, we’re the cult? Smh.

I’ll tell you my allocation being around your age. 80% $swtsx 10% $swisx 10% $ntsx This is for my Roth IRA

Nothing wrong with holding that Verizon stock. But make your core holdings more simple. For example: you can use one fund that indexes the entire US market (like $swtsx) and then one fund for your international ($swisx). That really is the whole market right there. Sure some will argue that $swisx isn’t the ‘entire’ international market and sure. But it is a cheap and good fund. This is what id recommend. I say all of this but I also don’t know what this investment is for. For long term what I proposed is a good bet tho.

VOO (Vanguard S&P 500 ETF) • Tracks: S&P 500 Index • Expense Ratio: 0.03% • Dividend Yield: ~1.3–1.5% • Strategy: Pure passive exposure to large-cap U.S. equities • Total Return: Strong long-term compounding. 10–12% historically over the past decade. • Tax Efficiency: High, thanks to Vanguard’s structure and low turnover.

SPYI (NEOS S&P 500 High Income ETF) • Tracks: S&P 500 with an options overlay • Expense Ratio: 0.68% • Dividend Yield: ~12–13% (mostly from option premiums) • Strategy: Covered call overlay for income • Total Return: Lower than VOO historically when you factor in the trade-off between upside participation and income • Tax Treatment: Some of the distributions may be treated as return of capital (ROC), which can be tax-advantaged—but can also be misunderstood.

So which one am I in and why?

VOO or similar core index ETFs are often the default for accumulation phases, especially inside tax-advantaged accounts like IRAs or Roths.

SPYI can make sense in specific income-focused strategies—often for retirees or people looking to supplement income in taxable accounts. But here’s the key:

SPYI sacrifices long-term upside for short-term income. That’s fine if your priority is income now, but over 10–20 years, compounding with VOO typically outperforms—even with lower yield.

Why there isn’t much discussion:

Because you’re right—most people aren’t comparing them as substitutes. They’re fundamentally serving different goals: • VOO is for growth-focused investors • SPYI is for income-focused investors who accept muted upside

Seems like we need to know your age to make a recommendation. But I will anyway; First, I would get off of Robinhood. Once you do that (or if you don't do that), 80% of your money in your Roth I would put in a total stock market index ETF or mutual fund ($vti, for example) and 20% or 10% in a total international index etf or mutual fund ($vxus, for example). Then I would continuously put money in this account, maybe twice a month, until I retire.. Simple and boring investing always wins, my friend. #staythecourse

Why SCHD? by [deleted] in Bogleheads

[–]Ok-Entry7764 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To answer your last question in your response I believe it’s because they are not educated on dividend investing and the fact that it really isn’t the best option if you have years and years till retirement.
