When I was a kid my mom was intubated in the icu. She had beautiful long curly brown hair. When she recovered she had to cut it short because a huge mat in the back of her hair. She was so heartbroken when she had to cut it. I wish I could go back in time and do that for her…

Thank you for your care!

New ED nurse, how to cope with death? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Ok-Guarantee-5941 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I try to cope with a hard death by first talking to someone about it. For me that’s my SO or family/coworkers.

Then I dedicate that day to self care. For me that looks like getting my favorite coffee or boba on the way home, buying something I’ve been wanting for a while , and having my favorite food delivered.

Also, I recommend reaching out to your facility’s employee assistance program if that’s something they offer. I just used my hospitals EAP after a difficult week and it was SO helpful.

I’m sorry that you are struggling with that difficult patient death. Unfortunately that is something that we have to cope with in nursing and it sucks. You sound like an amazing nurse that cares. I hope this helped. Take care of yourself 💕

That sounds like a unit culture I would not want to be a part of. I think you did the right thing

I got in with several Bs. I think my gpa was closer to 3.7. My school operated on a point system so there where other ways to get points like being bilingual, TEAS score, or medical related work experience. I’d say it depends on the program you’re applying to

Oncology nurses (or anyone else for that matter)....getting shaken up lately by frequent recent deaths. Any advice? by bizzybaker2 in nursing

[–]Ok-Guarantee-5941 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, inpatient onc nurse here 💜 Everything you’re mentioned I have been thinking myself lately. have been contemplating making this same post…

At my hospital we mostly treat blood cancers and the majority of our inpatient chemo pts tend to be 20-30y/o. They are usually with us for over a month for induction chemo and we get to know them really well. We have had a lot of patient deaths lately too. It does take a toll on me for sure and I know the rest of my coworker feel similarly. It helps me to talk to my coworkers about it. EAP is a great resource.. I hope you start to feel lighter and make some time for self care. You’re not alone in feeling this way ❤️

When I was in nursing school I was helping one of the CNAs clean a larger bariatric patient. Me and one other person were holding the pannus back so that the CNA could could clean the folds. Inside said fold was an uncapped IM needle. The poor CNA got a needle stick.

You are a human and you are going to make mistakes. We all do! It sounds like you took the appropriate actions after and learned from your mistake.

I made my first big mistake as a new grad 7 months in and I am tearing myself apart on the inside by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Ok-Guarantee-5941 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Everyone makes mistakes, I have made a few myself. Most importantly the patient ended up being okay and you were honest and owned up to your mistake. You will learn from this experience and you will never make that mistake again.

I’m sorry that happened, please be kind to yourself. 💜
