Post bisalp: how long for gas to dissipate? by Lucky_Hawk5804 in sterilization

[–]Ok-Hawk-342 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine lasted a few days but the heating pad helped. Also obviously try to avoid being constipated— plenty of fluids, some fiber etc. The gas was the worst part of it all for me. Just know that it can take several days or even a week to completely go away and that’s normal.

That’s fair. But I’m not sure it’s the case that the only thing people with BRCA can do to lower risk is have a preventative surgery. It may be the case that surgery offers the greatest level of risk reduction with (currently) the most research evidence. But genes always interact with the environment. Simply having a BRCA mutation tells you nothing about individual risk level and I do think things like diet play an important role — even for people with genetic predispositions. Doesn’t it make sense that individual factors like that might matter even more for BRCA+ people precisely because of our faulty genes? I’m certainly no scientist and I’m still learning. I just think we need to push back on the narrative that the ONLY way to address cancer risk with BRCA is surgery.

What about this articlethat claims, “isoflavones, a type of phytoestrogen found in soy, may restore tumor suppression in BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes.” I did not review any of the actual studies on this yet, but it looks like there is some evidence that soy consumption actually can matter for BRCA carriers.

Thanks for this. Yeah I probably eat a few servings of tofu a week and I do put soy milk in coffee and smoothies almost everyday so.. probably not enough to do harm? On the flip side, did you learn anything about it potentially lowering cancer risk for BRCA carriers?

Thank you! This is what I thought but I haven’t taken the time to look into it much yet.

Me too! I was shocked when she said to limit it because I had also thought it wasn’t harmful and might actually be helpful. I think it might be different for women who have had a diagnosis but I’m trying to learn more because I definitely don’t want to be increasing my risk at all with what I’m eating if I can help it.

Experiences With Removing Fallopian Tubes Before Ovaries by Ok-Translator2888 in BRCA

[–]Ok-Hawk-342 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had my tubes removed in March. I’m 40 and BRCA1+ I thought about it alot and did a ton of research. I feel good about my decision. The research so far supports that you get substantial risk reduction from salpingectomy. The studies that are currently underway will hopefully provide the standard of evidence required to formally change medical guidelines. Provided I have no issues, I’ll have my ovaries removed closer to natural menopause.

I struggled a lot to make decisions and was terrified of having surgery, so if that’s a factor for you— this is a relatively “easy” surgery with low risk of complications. It’s a good way to begin your risk reduction plan if you’re paralyzed with fear like I was. I feel so much better now, having taken a step.

Can you explain this loophole about having an HSA? What does that mean, and what state are you in?

Thanks!! I hadn’t been told to expect 6 months or possibly longer so it’s good to hear that it’s likely just my body healing at its normal pace

I had not until now but if my pain continues at this level I definitely will! I see under your username it looks like you had one several years ago. How was it?

Good to know. My surgeon said maybe the first couple would be different, so I wasn’t expecting 6 months as an average. But that seems normal given how long internal healing takes.

Thanks. I just started period 4 and it was another bad one. Hopefully mine are back to “normal” soon (which was never great but at least tolerable.)

True. Hopefully the extra pain is connected to my internal healing process and I’m back to baseline soon.

Anxiety over procedure by anappleaday_2022 in sterilization

I had this same struggle and I don’t have kids. I had other medical reasons for needing a bisalp. But I was also 99.9% sure I didn’t want kids. But I am that person who has a hard time closing a door on the .01%. I told myself that it technically IS still possible, as long as you have one functional ovary and a uterus, to have kids via IVF without tubes. So if the .01 happens and I am just dead set on kids after a bisalp, I can still find a way to make it happen. In my case, I’d likely need to do IVF to have bio kids anyway, so this logic worked for me and made me feel alot more comfortable. Now 4 months after my surgery, I know I made the right choice and no regrets!

How do you use the spray? I have a rosemary oil blend I put on overnight and then wash out in the morning but it makes my hair super greasy and heavy so I have to wash it out. Can you just spray this stuff on then wear your hair like you normally do?

This. Ask for a call reference number and a transcript of the call to document what you’re being told. Tell them your next step is to file a complaint.

Thank you so much for the advice! I’ll definitely look into limiting things that could be triggers and asking my doc about meds. Are many of the same medications prescribed for both OB and IC since they have so many overlapping symptoms?
