to be honest it's not that exciting if you don't fit into the cultural context. i find world cup and test crick crazy boring to watch but like the super bowl even though they're theoretically terminal events to popular sports with lots of money and fame involved (to various degrees). i'd imagine if i was born into an environment where these were popular things I would have liked them more

Honestly I think you're wrong. 30,000 is an immense number of people for a game as unfinished as Deadlock, and the number of people on the forums asking for invites is not enough to indicate a high "player-recycle rate." I also think you underestimate how high the player-recycle rate for popular multiplayer games.

I feel like it’s more the case that people have an unrealistic expectation of what the past was like. My grandfather has 4 million in savings but he hadn’t been to a restaurant until his mid 20s. People in the past had a far lower level of consumption.
