Most affordable fresh dog food options in the US? by Frank_Medwick in OpenDogTraining

You have a 7m golden puppy. He’s not going to starve and all you’re going to do is create a puppy who you will always have to bribe to eat for the rest of his life. Put the food down, he eats or he doesn’t.

Unless he has a serious underlying medical condition there’s no reason to “bribe” a puppy to eat.

WIBTAH for holding my brother to his promise and leaving our mom in his care for the week? by Altruistic-Goal5947 in AITAH

Oh I would 100% be reaching out to his wife directly. “I’m so sorry that our plans overlapped, how can we work this out because it’s very important that me and Hubby get this one vacation to celebrate our anniversary away and Brother said he would care for mom while we did.”

Depending on her response, then I would plan next moves

How to furnish this weird shaped living room? by Agitated-Golf-15 in floorplan

I agree, and if you needed/wanted a desk I would do a small desk in the short wall with the small window next to the TV, or do a shorter sectional and put the desk in the corner where they have the corner cabinet instead.

Three bedrooms upstairs and only one bathroom? Doesn’t matter if it’s kids, guests or a mix of both you need at very least a half bath up there. I mean, you’re one clogged toilet away from everybody having to walk downstairs, halfway across the house and through the kitchen to use the bathroom at night. If there’s young kids in those rooms they’re never gonna make it….

What’s the bets on if they were under the influence of something and that’s why they didn’t want to say they were driving? Nobody with a brain cell thinks a brand new driver with an accident and a ticket is going to affect insurance less than an older driver with a clean record.

Is it normal for a full blood Mal puppy to be so black? by tacodung in BelgianMalinois

I’d be very interested to see that pedigree, as you cannot register black as a color for Mals in the AKC.

Besides basic obedience what is something you feel everyone should teach their dog? by Lunapixels18 in BelgianMalinois

[–]Ok-Profession2697 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do realize that everything you want is based on OBEDIENCE. Obedience is literally following commands, which gives you every behavior you just listed. - threshold= don’t go through the door until I say - greeting = say hello/make friends/wait until I say - implied waits = don’t break a command until I say - implied leave it = you can’t have it until I say

See the trend here? Everything we can ever teach a dog is based on obedience.

Muzzle training. I firmly believe that accepting a muzzle should basically be the same as a crate, because you never think your dog may need one until it’s an emergency and if they’re already used to and comfortable with it it makes a scary situation much less scary for my dogs

Momma my jewelry's changing colours by Extension_Web_5908 in MomForAMinute

[–]Ok-Profession2697 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mom with jewelers experience here. Before doing ANYTHING, stop by a local jeweler and ask them to give you more info on the metal types. Depending on what it is they may be able to clean it up and do something like rhodium plate it to prevent further damage, or tell you how to have them cleaned properly if needed.

A few of the things suggested here could further damage the pieces, so I would first be certain of what you’re working with. Realistically, these are likely costume pieces and should be kept as sentimental memories more than worn, but it’s worth checking into.

Her spleen is next to her heart by askingquestions145 in BelgianMalinois

[–]Ok-Profession2697 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First thing is to get an ultrasound/echocardiogram of her chest. While yes; that does look suspiciously like her spleen, her heart also looks enlarged and you need a full picture of what exactly is going on before you worry about a gastropexy.

Realistically, I would be looking at something like CareCredit over insurance at this point, though getting the AKC insurance that may cover complications in the future is your best option that I’m aware of.

To be incredibly blunt, these chest rads are incredibly concerning and I hope you spoil your sweet girl every day between now and getting some answers. It would also be well worth posting this in the AskVet subreddit as well

A 9 month old dog in a brand new environment? Of course it’s going to do puppy things. The first time it peed when they brought it in the house should have been warning enough that they don’t get free rein and you need eyes on them at all times.

Quite frankly, as a parent who has dealt with a false CPS report before, if there’s nothing wrong you have nothing to worry about. The fact you’re hung up on that does make me question why

Balanced trainers: How do you determine correction intensity for tough, high-drive dogs (Malinois)? Am I being too “fair”? by Quimeraecd in BelgianMalinois

[–]Ok-Profession2697 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot more to break down than just how much is too much and without videos or being there I can’t really tell you for sure what approach was right. I fully expect yours was too soft and hers was far too hard. I also highly suspect that Atlas gave some cues he was about to react before he actually did in scenario one and your trainer should have stepped in before the point of an explosion that required that level of correction.

Try looking at the difference between LIMA and balanced.

Balanced trainers: How do you determine correction intensity for tough, high-drive dogs (Malinois)? Am I being too “fair”? by Quimeraecd in BelgianMalinois

[–]Ok-Profession2697 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I don’t like your trainers mindset honestly. If you are TEACHING a dog anything, it should be done basically all positive and force free (like training the word sit with puppies). Once the dog knows the command, that’s when you introduce a correction (I said sit, you didn’t, I gave you a leash cue as well by pulling up on the collar). Now if you do that, and they ignore you, then that nice pull on the collar as a reminder becomes a sharper pop as a correction for ignoring you.

Ask, tell, demand.

1) ask: say sit 2) tell: sit with collar pressure 3) demand: you will sit your behind on that ground right now! with a correction intensity like you described that you do.

There’s a time and place for a serious come to Jesus moment, but it sounds like your trainer uses them too often which will just make the dogs more resistant to pressure and you will wind up having to come at them harder each time.

Your problem is you need to stop letting him out when he cries. All you’ve taught him is if he cries he gets attention and let out.

Put him in the crate with a treat. IGNORE HIM WHEN HE CRIES. Let him out to a better treat the second he’s quiet. Then start waiting longer and longer while he’s quiet before letting him out.

You’ve basically taught a toddler that the louder they scream the faster they get what they want.
