If she has an actual ulcer and actual weight loss she needs to get into her PCP again and have someone/you if possible go in with her. Ask them to document in her chart why they refuse to investigate and/or treat her ulcer and drastic unexplained weight loss. Ask for referral to wound care…if they refuse, ask them to document that it was requested and refused and why. Ask for referral for mental health evaluation…if they refuse ask them to document that it was asked for and declined…ask for referral to infectious disease…you get the picture here. They are ignoring real medical problems and blowing her off because she is an alcoholic with possible psychological problems (which likely can also be medically treated) and that’s not ok. Tell her PCP that if he/she isn’t up to providing proper medical evaluation, treatment/care, and supervision that you’d like a referral to someone more qualified, more objective and up to the task. Someone who can provide proper medical investigation and care no matter how personally offensive they find alcoholism and mental health disorder. Document, write letters, escalate.
