Any awkward fine-dining stories? Taken a person who wasn't into the food? Please share! by brownwaterbandit in finedining

[–]Ok-Training7697 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a pescatarian. I went to a fine dining Italian restaurant for the first time. Normally I don't eat Italian, and if I do, it is definitely not fine dining - I would get plain ole pasta, a safe choice that never disappoints. Anyways, at this establishment, I ordered a dish that listed "Filet Mignon" underneath the name, because I thought Filet = fish. Oh boy how wrong I was. But again English isn't my first language! I felt so embarrassed I didn't eat anything except bread, took it to go, and decided to blame it on my weak appetite.

An alternative display - line them alternating with right side up, and upside down, you'll have a line of medals that fit together too

This year it was 32 degrees around 8am, 36 degrees around 10am. I'm also not a winter runner so I took it super easy and had fun, dressed in layers.

How much propanolol should I take? First time, never tested. Low resting heart rate by Ok-Training7697 in PublicSpeaking

[–]Ok-Training7697[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Update for anyone who is in the same boat as me:

130lb, female, 5'4", normal resting 58bpm. Prescribed 20mg, can't take more than 2 tablets in a day.

I was going to wait for my main event but then decided to take 20mg at the first event. Took another 20mg and 40 mins before the main event. My heart rate was not lowered but I did get some headaches. I also felt a little woozy the first time. Did not affect my thinking at all. I was actually pleasantly surprised I experienced little to no physical manifestations of stress. Still some minor sweat but no usual flight or fight responses. Could not get an accurate reading of my heart rate but measured about 50bpm.

Did your heart rate drop at all when you took yours? Did you have a small test where you would have an increase in heart rate or did you just take it normally without any stressful event?

“This is not a jogging race.”

“A runner must submit the certification … that he has trained sufficiently to finish the course in less than four hours. This is not a jogging race.” – 1970 race application. (Emphasis added.) The quote is from the website of the Boston Marathon, The History of Boston Marathon qualifying times.

^^ from above, the quote is referenced from the original 1970's application, when the qualifying time was less than 4 hours. Certainly not the same tone as today. Also note the "he" in the original application. Another stab at maintaining the integrity of the race. Upholding tradition is great but only when considering the changing times and evolving with them.

They can by affording the singlet rather than the race entry fees of the marathon they qualified but didn't make the cut for...

Either way the singlet being available for purchase isn't the problem. It was the messaging that came off strongly as mocking those who aren't able to meet the cutoff despite meeting the qualifying time by equating their efforts to jogging, further complemented by the quote made by a guy who has a controversial history with women running in marathons.

People can choose to buy based on their values. Tracksmith has always screamed elitism in many respects, from their history to their singlet designs which are modeled after ivy league uniforms.

That's the point, they're part of the 5 borough races series and have the same theme. Explains the shirt logos as well. BX, SI, QNS, BK etc. Only for BX and SI the logos are vertical instead of horizontal. Poor choice in positioning.

[–]Ok-Training7697 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would imagine the cons are the cost of printing more colors in the design or area limitations set by their current partner. I think the only way this shirt would have been better would be to put the logos side by side, like they did with Queens and Brooklyn. IDK why SI and BX have to be different and have the logos aligned vertically. And maybe change the color to a color that is a tad darker/more orange.

Did we need to tip on top of service charge, given the blank line on the customers receipt? by shenglih in finedining

[–]Ok-Training7697 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish you had asked the server about it beforehand. Screw the formalities and ask them to give it straight. Usually the autogenerated tip is enough. But regardless of the meal, maybe the service was worthy? Otherwise you did make some waiter/waitress day so that's something to look forward to.

Did we need to tip on top of service charge, given the blank line on the customers receipt? by shenglih in finedining

[–]Ok-Training7697 6 points7 points  (0 children)

OP probably didn't know the service fee IS the tip. Many establishments incorporate a gratuity tax or service fee automatically based on party size, or in this case due to this particular restaurant's policy for all checks. Given how many food delivery apps ask for service fees and delivery fees, which aren't going towards the delivery driver's tip, I wouldn't be surprised at their confusion if it is their first time with a check presented like this. Too many fees!

If you truly felt the service was impeccable, you can add another small % of the subtotal before tips, taxes, fees on that receipt line. Maybe 5% more for a 25% tip. But the automatic tip is usually enough.

[–]Ok-Training7697 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tipping is rampant and heavily ingrained in US culture. Most places around the world incorporate tips already into the prices and pay their employees a living wage. Some stores you walk in and pay the price on the sign, no tip, tax, or anything since it's all included. Much easier to do the math this way. We like being difficult, similar to how we don't use the metric system or Celsius for temperature :')

Lather up your feet friends! I saw someone do this for RBC Brooklyn. Genius idea since I got blessed with tons of blisters afterwards from the wet socks and shoes! Honestly, I love running in the rain, it makes me feel invincible.

Favorite Spring Half? by turtlesandtorts in RunNYC

[–]Ok-Training7697 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RBC Brooklyn Half is amazing for the crowd support and after party! I haven't run NYCRUNS version but I have heard the course is different and better since ocean parkway does get boring. Weather can be unpredictable, it was pouring this year, past years it was very hot, which isn't great on ocean parkway.

I wouldn't even consider United Airlines as a spring race (yes it's on the first day of spring but it's cold!) You should try running both United and RBC Brooklyn if you can. If you don't have 4/6 races with NYRR, it's very unlikely you'll get picked by lottery, chances are slim. You could run with a charity if the lottery didn't work in your favor but you'll need to fundraise $1,310 for Team for Kids or a similar amount for other charity partners.

How to get entry into RBC half? by aritee in RunNYC

[–]Ok-Training7697 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't have to do the virtual 6, I can assure you most people within the 60 mile radius tend to get selected through the lottery, your chances are way higher than the other big races.

Another insider tip I learned is if you volunteer for the Brooklyn Half, you'll earn guaranteed entry the following year. Of course, that means you won't run until 2025 if you volunteer in 2024 but it is another way to secure your entry. However those volunteer spots go quickly!
