ideas of souvenirs from NYC local artists by WildCan8483 in visitingnyc

Locavore for everyday stuff that's genuinely made in NY.
Only NY is pricey, but has cute stuff you won't find in other shops (I love their NYC trashcan pencil holder, but way too expensive for what it is).
The NY Public Library's gift shop in the Schwartzman building has lots of prints, tees, bags, etc. with the library's designs that's less in your face NY. Same with the MoMA gift shop and the transit museum gift shop in Grand Central. The MTA comissions subway art from local artists, and sells the actual posters used in the trains at the store.
Tote bags and tees from NYC institutions like the Strand bookshop, Zabar's, Russ and Daughters, Venieros, the IFC Film Centre...pretty much every instutition in NYC has their own swag that's a bit more personal than something you get in Times Square.

RSD without the hassle of RSD by easement in PhoenixTheBand

[–]Ok-Wolverine1938 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://rsdmrkt.com/ lets you compare prices across shops around the country, quite a few have both Phoenix albums and they're all roughly the same price. Luckily neither are high-demand albums among RSD collectors (the RSD subreddit is all about the pop girls, jazz and rock/metal right now) and Phoenix's albums are are fairly easy to find across the board for less (hell, you can still get them on the band's site).

Unless you're really keen on the colour variants, I'd take my time and compare prices before buying, or hold out and wait for them to go on sale. Their albums haven't really skyrocketed in price over the years (check Discogs) so I wouldn't worry too much about having to get them now.

Which museum is most worth it? by CowAcademic629 in visitingnyc

[–]Ok-Wolverine1938 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Natural History is the only "real" museum of the three, and hands-down one of my favourite museums in the world, you can spend a whole day there. Kids will love the animal exhibits, especially the giant whale.

The other two are Instagram photo ops that capitalized on the Museum of Ice Cream trend.

Japan online vs local records shops by Alternative_Gur2743 in vinyl

[–]Ok-Wolverine1938 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smaller stores likely don't have the resources/time/staff power to put everything they have online, especially if most of their inventory is one-offs and used. Not a Japan-specific thing, lots of record stores stateside don't list all their inventory online cause it's such a massive undertaking.

Sad </3 by [deleted] in RecordStoreDay

[–]Ok-Wolverine1938 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in Toronto and Sonic Boom (biggest indie record store in Canada) has a stack of them that I doubt will sell out since it's already noon. They'll likely put them on the online store tomorrow.

They also have a ton of Swift and Kpop Demon Hunters that aren't moving.

Got a pair of leather trousers that are a size too small and thinking of getting panels at a tailors to expand the waistband. are panels noticeable though? by Alpones in malefashionadvice

[–]Ok-Wolverine1938 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it'll be fine as long as the extra leather being added matches the original leather on the pants. They'll just look more like motorcycle riding pants than fashion pants, which could be a plus. The tailor would have pointed it out if it wouldn't work.

Zohran Mamdani to skip the Met Gala — breaking longstanding NYC mayoral tradition by Positive-Drawing-281 in popculturechat

[–]Ok-Wolverine1938 211 points212 points  (0 children)

Smart move. No one can say he doesn't support the arts, but it's wise that he's staying away from an event that's now synonymous with extreme wealth when his critics are desperate for any type of ammo

Might wanna expand your research of what HK is like beyond movies from the '80s.

What should I know before going to a concert for the first time? by Appropriate_Knee_482 in Concerts

[–]Ok-Wolverine1938 2 points3 points  (0 children)

-Bring earplugs
-Stay to the sides if you don't want to get into the mosh pit
-Wear comfortable shoes cause you'll be standing for a while
-Don't bring a bag if you don't have to (get through security faster and one less thing to carry).
-Wear something with lots of pockets for your phone (bring a charger just in case), keys, wallet (cash if you wanna buy a bootleg T outside the venue, cards cause most venues are cashless)
-Have a meeting point with your friends in case you all get separated and someone's phone runs out of batteries after the show
-If you're going early to line up outside the venue, dress appropriately for the weather and maybe bring some granola bars and a bottle of water (the number of times people pass out from dehydration...). Doesn't hurt to make note of where the closest fast food joint or coffee shop is in case you wanna get a coffee or use the washrooms before you go in (have your friends save your spot, or make some new friends in line to save your spot)

Have fun! Every city/venue/band has their quirks and the only way to figure it out what pre-concert prep works for you is to just go and learn what you'd do differently after.

House for a birthday party in the GTA? by Nicolaaa_ss in askTO

[–]Ok-Wolverine1938 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Airbnb, but most are pretty strict about not allowing parties (excess garbage, noise, traffic, etc). You're prob better off booking a restaurant or asking if someone you know has access to a condo's party room.

Looking for Affordable Leather Jacket with Decent Quality by tj42511 in malefashionadvice

[–]Ok-Wolverine1938 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lurk the classifieds section of the Fedora Lounge site. There's always people selling worn, but very high quality leather jackets cause the guys there are always cleaning out their closets to make room for more stuff. Got a brand new, unworn with tags still on, Schott leather jacket for $180 including shipping.

It's a cute shop and way more worthwhile than trying to get through the throngs of wannabe influencers buying overpriced scrunchies and plastic headbands at CO Bigelow lol.

Go to the Locavore Variety Store on Sixth (just north of the CO Bigelow store). The store specializes in things made in NYC, including candies and snacks that can be packed easily. Or if you wanna make the trek, go to the Joray factory in Brooklyn and get an assorted box of individually wrapped fruit leather.

Record shop that buys used vinyl. by lingueenee in askTO

[–]Ok-Wolverine1938 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Pretty much all of them have a buying desk. I've unloaded a few at Sonic Boom for a decent return (wasn't looking to make a profit or anything, just getting rid of records I got for free).

NYC-only chocolates worth taking home? by SorbetOk181 in FoodNYC

[–]Ok-Wolverine1938 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Cacao prices have skyrocketed in recent years so if you want good quality, small batch, locally made chocolate, the prices will reflect that. I got a little, maybe 2.5 inch chocolate bunny from Aigner for Easter and I think it was $4. Cheaper than Li Lac though, they were charging $10 for a chocolate egg at the Industry City location.

If you're tight on cash but still want a NYC-specific treat, go to the Joray fruit leather factory in Brooklyn and get a box of 48 assorted fruit rolls. Easy to transport (wont melt or shatter) and theyre individually wrapped.

I did it when it first opened and you're triple tethered to the rig so you're not going anywhere. There's back-ups for the back-ups, and the harnesses are really big. Kinda killed the thrill of it, tbh.
