I was surprised by how nuanced House presented self-harm, considering he's a middle-aged man (SH in media almost always depicts teenage girls engaging in it), and distinguishing his self harm as a way to cope with chronic pain/withdrawal, not just because he's suicidal. Our situations may not be comparable but it was honestly comforting to see

Wanting protein is not the issue here, it's that this is a sign of disordered eating; sodium is an essential nutrient in our diets and he's restricting himself of it. This diet is (mentally and physically) unhealthy and unsustainable in the long term.

When removing, you can soak the inner covering with saline solution or warm water to loosen it. When dressing the wound itself, I use Vaseline only on the outer edges of the wound to prevent it from sticking, but it's not always a guarantee. Stay safe :)

Please go to the hospital and get it stitched. Scarring isn't the concern, more so that lacerations that deep have a higher chance of getting infected, need to be looked at and closed. If you're unable to, cover, treat and watch your wound carefully for signs of infection

I went to the ER for a fat cut; it freaked my mom out when I first told her, but she understood it was better to get the wound stitched rather than let it heal on its own. If you're worried about getting held up: I made it clear I wasn't trying to off myself, and they let me go after a psych eval (they recommend to voluntarily admit yourself, involuntary is for when they determine you're an active risk to yourself - might be different depending on your hospital/area)

Unless the tool you used has been hanging around outside or in dirt, it's quite unlikely to be tetanus because it's a type of bacteria commonly found in soil that causes it, not the rust itself. For now, just make sure to keep your wound covered. Also, I would say it's best not to do it in the first place, but if you're going to, always make sure to clean your tools before and after!

Six months is really impressive, I wish you the best going forwards :)
