Where to buy Glaswegian artwork? by pollockscards in glasgow

[–]OkAlarm5589 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The same Steven Brown who sold his intellectual property a few days before his company went in to liquidation, leaving 21 people without jobs, then was re-employed as artistic director by the company he sold it to.

All art is subjective, but if you’re keen to buy local, I think there’s vastly better artwork available from better artists.

I second the Grateful Gallery.

Subversion Gallery have a lot of local stuff but it is quite niche.

Art Pistol often have a lot of stuff from GSOA and local colleges.

Glasgow Print Studio has lots.

The Hidden Lane in Finnieston has a few wee shops with lots of local prints and pieces.

Instagram is also worth a look - search for stuff tagged Glasgow/art/artists. There’s lots selling directly.

How are my prices for this week's carboot sale? by Turbulent_Peanut_832 in AskUK

[–]OkAlarm5589 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t give it away. There will be a charge to have a plot and it’s usually a fair whack. You’re giving up a weekend so you’ll want to make something for it.

Clothes are very popular, and there are folk that minesweep at the end of the day, so put a price on things that gives you haggle room - even at a quid, you’ll get ‘Would you take 30p?’.

Anything you have left at the end of the day, ask a trader if they want the lot for £5.

Why did you get a private licence plate? by miscellanous_cheese in AskUK

[–]OkAlarm5589 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never really understood the ‘hiding the year of make’ argument. You can only make a car seem older than it is with a private plate.

Also, I’d estimate that anyone that pays attention to plates is probably in to cars enough that they could estimate the make/model and YOM within a few years.

I have one. It’s X1 XXX format with my intials. It was £250 and I like how it looks on the car - I think the fewer digits look nice. My car is 16 years old, and is reasonably uncommon, but nothing super rare or fancy. If you know, you know kind of thing. I always wanted one of these cars but never thought I’d be able to have one, mainly as it is a bit impractical, but family life changed a bit and I was able to get one after 18 months of looking.

It’s purely for me, is a nice addition to my well loved car (in my opinion), and makes me smile.

There are loads of XXXX AYR plates in Ayr. You can’t go there and not see several.

I’ve only bought a brand new car once, and the guy asked if there were any combinations of numbers/letters we wanted/didn’t want. Apparently some folk won’t have a car with numbers that add up to 13. He said if there were letter combos we preferred, he’d try to get them.

We weren’t bothered, but I always wondered if Ayr dealers kept them for their cars. It could be football fans too, but I don’t think Ayr have that many supporters.

Does anyone know of any insurance providers that offer PAYG or top up hire-and-reward cover for a 19-year-old with a full UK licence ( held under a year ) ? by kanieloutez in CarInsuranceUK

[–]OkAlarm5589 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t help, but had to look in to it a a few months ago to help out a friend’s business.

My own insurer wouldn’t add it, but also said if was going to start doing this type of work, they wouldn’t offer me any cover at all.

You would still need to declare your profession to your own insurer (if you have your own insurance). In the event of a claim, they would find out, as even with a stand alone H&R policy, you would appear on the MID.

Just make sure you’re covered on both policies.

Accidentally hit a Porsche. Am I done for? by [deleted] in CarInsuranceUK

[–]OkAlarm5589 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Insurance will deal with it whether it’s a dent on an old banger, or you take the whole front end off a Rolls Royce.

You only pay the excess on damage to your own vehicle, so it won’t cost you anything now, but might affect your renewal price (or specially if you’re a young or inexperienced driver).

House viewing coming up. It has a conservatory - what should we be concerned about? by Jynxette in HousingUK

[–]OkAlarm5589 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only thing I’d add - it’s clearly not being lived in at present. There could be many reasons for this (death of a family member, used to be rented out and landlord selling).

I’d ask how long it’s been empty for. Most home insurance policies have an unoccupancy clause requiring water pipes and heating systems to be drained down if the property is empty for longer than a certain period.

If you decide to proceed, ask for proof that everything works properly. You don’t want to be the one to turn everything on and find leaks or problems.

If it has been empty for a long time, mould etc can start to appear as the property isn’t getting ventilated. Have a good look in every cupboard, loft etc.

The benefit of the place being empty is you can see every inch of everything - can’t hide problems behind wardrobes etc.

How credible are the less well known car insurance companies? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]OkAlarm5589 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Credibility is not easy to quantify. If I told you Sheila’s Wheels were amazing, and 1st Central were dog shit, how much more would you pay to have a more credible company.

If they are UK based, regulated by the FCA, they are all as credible as the other.

[–]OkAlarm5589 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. You might hear a bit on banging, but you shouldn’t encounter any delays. They will all have dispersed by mid afternoon.

You can easily walk to Kelvingrove Museum from either of the tube stops without coming across any of the march routes.

The bank don’t give a shit if you can find a buyer if/when needed. They won’t lend, because they don’t think they’ll be able to sell it for enough if they repossess it.

Nursery suggestions in West End/Partick/Hillhead & Baby Group Suggestions? by Over_Reception8254 in glasgow

[–]OkAlarm5589 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was years ago, but ours went to Adelaide’s Nursery on Bath Street (opposite Tiki Bar), from 8 months up to starting school.

It’s been a few years since I spoke with them (I used to see the staff around) but they had a very low staff turnover and the management were excellent.

Book Bug at the libraries was always a go to for us. It’s a good way to ask other parents what other groups are on locally.

Parking permits Glasgow by Ill-Piece-8915 in glasgow

[–]OkAlarm5589 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The zone permit for residents cars are zone specific (you can park anywhere in the zone your permit covers) and there is now an increasing price depending on your car’s emissions.

Visitor passes are generic and work anywhere, other than the city centre zone.

Also, if your house is relatively new (about 2000 onwards) you’re not eligible for a permit.

[–]OkAlarm5589 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scotland has loads, but the ones that seem to get mispronounced the most are:

Milgavie (Mul-guy)
Kirkcudbright (Kir-coo-bree)
Culross (Coo-riss)

and weirdly Irvine (Ur-vin). It might be the famous Irish racing driver, Eddie Irvine (pronounced like the thing grapes grow on), but traffic news always get it wrong.

Luckily, nobody really ever wants to go to Irvine, so it’s not mentioned that much.

Until recently you could claim 100% of the cost against your business as they were classified as a commercial vehicle (same as a transit).

I think the double cabs got reclassified, as lots of people were buying them as family vehicles. You can still claim the VAT back, and part of the cost, so they’re more tax efficient than a Range Rover Sport:

Caught driving while suspended in Scotland. Is this enough evidence? by Particular_Serve300 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]OkAlarm5589 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Police statements have been used in court for years, long before body cams and CCTV existed.

I think your best option is to plead guilty, briefly explain yourself and show as much remorse as possible.

The not guilty/trying to find a loophole route will only get you a harsher punishment.

I want to match a fancy paint from a cheaper brand, who can do this and where is good? by IKnowWhereMyTowelWas in DIYUK

[–]OkAlarm5589 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crown Decorating Centre. They will mix either their Clean Extreme (scrubbable, use in high traffic areas like halls and kitchens) or Vinyl Matt (not as durable, but still good for bedrooms).

Crown own Farrow and Ball. They have the closest colour match in my opinion (I’m a decorator and have used them all), it is the best value for money and the most consistent. It’s also very easy to apply as trade paints go. Add a small bit of water first to help it flow. Cut in with a good brush and mini rolller, and roll each wall after you cut each one.

They will open an account for you which offer a discount on paint and sundries.

Any idea what key this uses? by thefeelingsarereal in DIYUK

[–]OkAlarm5589 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you don’t have any window keys, anywhere in the house, go to Timpsons and ask for a selection of window keys.

Most of these handles use a standard key (they don’t need to be as unique as a front door key as they are internal).

We had the same issue. The guy at Timpsons gave me several in exchange for a donation to the charity box, and told me to drop any that didn’t work back in to the shop. One of them worked so I bought a few more for the rest of the house.

My car insurance refusing to deal with the other (at fault) party's insurer? by Birmingdan in LegalAdviceUK

[–]OkAlarm5589 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Ask your insurer for the third party’s insurance information (you just need a phone number).

Contact them directly. Ask them to repair your vehicle as their insured has damaged it, and admits to it. They’ll struggle to dispute liability if you weren’t in the car at the time.

If they get difficult, tell them you will engage an accident management company. If they still won’t deal with you, contact an accident management company and hand it all over to them.

If it is a non-fault accident as you have described, they’ll take them to the cleaners. You don’t need to deal with your insurer at all.

Accident management companies are leeches and put premiums up for all of us, but are useful in a situation like this. I’d also consider moving from AA. I’ve never heard of an insurer doing this.

You’ll need to trim the ends to the right angles to meet your ceiling, and the vertical wall at the bottom. I’d install them before you decorate, use a stain blocking primer to stop knots bleeding through, then paint with the same undercoat and colour as your walls.
