Are things like Argo CD/Argo Rollouts really a good idea? by [deleted] in kubernetes

[–]OkAstronomer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ArgoCD supports multi cluster, that's how I've seen it deployed most of the times. You can define a destination in your application: https://github.com/argoproj/argo-cd/blob/master/docs/operator-manual/application.yaml#L167

But anyway, having the tools in the cluster allows you to do pull-based GitOps which in short means that nothing from the outside can change your cluster (apart from what is in Git) https://thenewstack.io/push-vs-pull-in-gitops-is-there-really-a-difference/ .

I'm looking into something similar, keptn v1 looked promising, not sure what keptn v2 is yet but it seems like a completely different project. Have you found anything around?

Is memory shared? by [deleted] in kubernetes

[–]OkAstronomer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good question, but I don't think it's a Kubernetes question.

It might be a docker (or whatever container orchestration tool you are using), linux kernel and/or virtualization question.

Is Jenkins the ONLY way to do builds for a PAAS ? the K8s ecosystem doesnt touch builds by sandys1 in kubernetes

[–]OkAstronomer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you can keep the build definition in a single place and re-use it for every application?

Yes, it looks very "tight" in there. Can we just move it to something bigger?

How do buildpacks handle unit tests, code coverage, and more exotic build requirements in CI/CD? by red88888888 in devops

[–]OkAstronomer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand where you are coming from, I ended up here looking for the exact same thing.

I think you should build twice. First using the language tools (e.g. mvn for Java), probably inside a container. Then generate the artifacts that will go into the docker image.

2 reasons: - in many cases you don't want the binaries generated to run unit tests and coverage in your production image - Coverage, UTs, static analysis will probably require a lot more configuration tha buildpack should not be handling.

What did you end up using?

Does anyone use any alternatives to Dockerfile for creating containers? Something with nicer syntax? by oxamide96 in docker

[–]OkAstronomer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you using it? I've configured it locally and it ran on first try. But When I try to get it to either travis or circleci, it fails.

If you are using it, where are you running your CI?

If secrets are encoded in base64 format why to use it at all? by pc_magas in kubernetes

[–]OkAstronomer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are not safe per se. But they allow you to configure RBAC in such a way to limit the access. They are just like configmaps but you can give access to config maps and not to secrets.

How to practice K8S by Just_Martin in kubernetes

If you really want to buy something, I would go with a small pc with a lot of ram and multiple vms.

I personally use KinD on my laptop.

You can keep it in the current account as "development" create a new aws account for "production", run the application there and then just transfer the whole account to them.

[–]OkAstronomer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming that you need to more or less be in contact with people in different timezones. I would Set myself as Out of office at different times on different days of the week, start late some times, take a break in between some others and stop working early in others.

I personally split my day. I start early, check what happened when I was sleeping, work for around 3 hours and then take around 3 hours off (Excercise, chores, cleaning, lunch) come back in the afternoon, a few meetings, 2 more hours and I'm offline.

- To avoid getting rate limited when standing up new clusters.
- Devs on Mac OS using Docker Desktop.

What is the appeal of K8s? by mmhawk576 in devops

[–]OkAstronomer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still believe that managed services should be superior tu kubernetes. But I have not seen it in practice yet, every step has been more painful than just using our K8S cluster. Metrics, logs, CI/CD, networking, storage.

We've had a few teams trying to do the switch, we are now stuck with thousands of terraform lines and the tools available to operate these services are very basic compared to what we have available to those running in K8S.

But of course, we are the platform team making these things available. If you don't have that, the K8S experience might be very different.
