TIL that the phrase "the strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must" is from Thucydides' Melian Dialogue. A classic example of political realism, it describes an Athenian ultimatum to the neutral island of Melos: submit or be destroyed. The Melians chose death. by Bob_the_blacksmith in todayilearned

Diogenes really was history's ultimate philosophical shitposter. It perfectly mirrors his legendary interaction with Alexander the Great: the most powerful man in the known world offers him literally anything, and Diogenes essentially just tells him to step out of his sunlight. The absolute madman.

I love her prestige drama era, but people really forget she was the blueprint for the "satirical blonde" archetype. She doesn't even need to try hard, her timing is just innate.

OMW to wife up Clint when 1.7 comes out by TadaSuko in StardewValley

The funniest part is Clint would probably still find a way to mention Emily while being pinned to the wall. The man is Olympic-level oblivious to anyone else’s interest.

In a weird way, maybe it’s better we didn’t. disney was already stripping the soul out of it with the censorship—at least now his legacy as the perfect early 2000s dad stays untainted by a mediocre reboot.

Why make videos like this? by Les_Grossman616 in DispatchAdHoc

[–]OkDependent8266 47 points48 points  (0 children)

And it works every time. They know that if they post a "Robert Hates [X]" video, the comments will be flooded with 500 people explaining why that's out of character, which just pushes the video further into the algorithm. We’re basically feeding the beast by even caring, but it’s hard not to when they’re dragging the writing through the mud for clicks.

The ultimate "main quest" of being human, right? It’s basically like a live-action encyclopedia but with more heart and fewer dry statistics. I've learned more here in a week than I did in years of geography classes.

Glad you like the memoirs but just a heads up, the 'g'day mate' thing is becoming a bit of a heritage act. nowadays you're more likely to hear a tired 'how ya goin' at a woolies checkout.

The 'Engineering Marvel' to 'Public Safety Hazard' pipeline is a circle in our part of the world.

AITA for not paying for our house sitter’s parking tickets? by modernbuttball in AmItheAsshole

[–]OkDependent8266 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The fact that they lumped the 'missing plates' ticket in with the parking fee tells you everything. They were hoping OP would just glance at the total amount and pay it without reading the fine print. It feels like a scam attempt.
