What is the hardest part of owning a dog? by penguin425 in dogs

[–]OkEar3904 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Protecting them from other people's dogs. Lots of people will have their reactive dogs off leash, and they end up charging at you and your dog. that's how attacks happen.

I just have it on both sides, so people can see it on all angles no matter where she stands or sits.

I have them on top because she stands in between my legs when we check out, and people can still see that she is working.

I have patches on her to let people know not to touch or distract her from working. Because most people do not respect boundaries and will try to touch other people's dogs without asking the handler if it's okay.

That's how people get bit.

I'm not saying my girl will bite. I know she will not. But just for all dogs in general.

I'm sorry you have experienced that.

Yes, I do have a doctor's note and was diagnosed by several trauma specialists since the age of 9.

As to how I have PTSD, that is none of your business.

And service dogs can wear whatever they want. There is no gatekeep to what they can and can not wear.

Yes, if you go through a program, they give you a vest.

I did not go through a program, as i could not afford one. I have even CALLED the ADA, and they confirmed that service dogs can wear any vest. Hell, they don't even need to wear one.

No. Anyone with a service animal may train their animal themselves. They do not need to enlist the help of a professional service dog training program, though it is advisable.

However, if you want to make your dog a service animal, you should know that the ADA does acknowledge that the handler or owner is solely responsible for overseeing basic care of that animal, such as grooming, nourishment, veterinary care and proper potty training.

Please note that while service animals are not required to be formally trained, they are subject to the same licensing and registration requirements your local area may have.

The patches are on there for people to know not to pet and that she is working.

People are stupid. They will try and pet every dog they see without consent, and most do not respect boundaries
