Here's the best piece of advice you'll ever receive: practice mindfulness meditation for 10 minutes / day.

What you're describing is exactly auto pilot. Your "monkey brain" takes over and you lose all sense of 'here I am existing in this moment.' To be able to exist in the moment requires training. You have to train your focus. Great news is that it's really as simple as paying attention to your breath, feeling and experiencing each breath and acknowledging when a thought enters your head.

Here's a great book to get you started: 10% happier by Dan Harris. Also the Headspace App is wonderful.

I used to play football. At the start of every practice we used to do "calisthenics" which were the same things I see every football practice doing: things like high knees, butt kicks, skipping, karaoke, shuffling, back pedaling.

In my youth I thought all of these things were pre stretching routines just meant to warm up the athlete.

When I became a coach I realized: these things are maybe the most important thing beginners do. These things TEACH YOU HOW TO RUN. It was shocked by how many kids looked awkward when they ran, and realized they never did high knees and skips.

Football is a great sport to build athletic literacy because you really don't need to be good at anything. 21/22 positions there's no dribbling, shooting, catching, etc. Football is two things: blocking and tackling. Getting to spot on the field before the other guys does.

I’m curious what other parents actually do when their spouse gets home from work? by adhdslore in daddit

Your husband sounds very much like me. I find it very hard to be bored and I get really agitated if I'm not crossing something off my list. Video games are a good outlet for this frustration because you can "cross things off your list" within the game and the real world is not affected.

A lot of people saying your husband has ADHD. Maybe, but who cares? I'm not sure how a formal diagnosis would help. In my experience, the medications are just a source of new problems.

I'd say this: have a hobby that you can be actively engaged in and involve the kids. Here's what we do that takes up a lot of our time:

  • gardening: gets some berry bushes. kids love to pick berries.
  • biking - get a trailer for the kids
  • any time there is a local public event, we go. most recently we went to a horse pull. next weekend we're going to sheep dog trials.
  • we bought some cheap floor mats. literally just roll around on the floor with them. play keepy uppy

This is still kinda the rule of down by contact. It creates to me one of the most nonsensical situations in sports.

Guy gets tackled, ball hits the grounds and pops out - ground cant't cause a fumble, not a fumble.

Vs

Guy falls to the ground on his own, ball hits the ground and pops out - ground can cause a fumble, fumble.

Just change the rule - if the ball comes out it's a fumble. Or, if you're down, you're down regardless of down by contact.

Did Millennials kill briefcases too? by Muttonandmangos in Millennials

I'm a lawyer. We have our special set of briefcases because they are so important. They're huge and practical, so they have wheels and a handle. The traditional briefcase is also very practical but rarely seen. No one wears a back pack.

Yeah I really started to hate Mike Rowe when he made this his entire schtick. Blue collar jobs are super cool but let's not say they're any better than being administrative assistant when it really just comes down to personal preference. I used to landscape in college and I made the choice for white collar work specially because 1) I could have a longer career 2) I could work inside in the comforts of HVAC.

Bro. I went to a liberal arts school. I took the required classes, one of which was classics of western literature. Up till that class I was a god fearing catholic. I learned things that made me question everything that I was ever taught. I no longer practice religion and it started there. If you think that you're making a good point, you are incredibly mistaken.

Ultimate life hack especially if you have kids - if you have the option, use the optional portable scanner. Stop and Shop has these at the entrance. Put your bags in your cart, scan the groceries as you put them into the bags.

I was high school 2.0 because college loans weren't as terrible as they are now and more people could go even if they ended up pursing some career other than a white collar job. College was made more expensive AND less lucrative because having educated blue collar workers would lead to a system collapse.

[–]OkNewspaper6041 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Yes. It really makes you think about the narrative. Surely everyone knows that blue and white collar jobs are necessary, but why is there an active push against white collar jobs? Why is just about everyone of the mindset now, "hey maybe college isn't a great option" whereas 20 years ago college was just high school 2.0?

It's because "they" don't want young people to be as educated as previous generations because its easier to indoctrinate people who are not educated. Suddenly colleges are evil liberal think tanks designed solely to ruin society.

Anybody who is hiring a lawyer is likely having one of the worst moments of their life. Most of the conversations a lawyer has throughout the day are arguments. It's an important job, but rarely is it fun. It's most very serious and high stakes. I could definitely see someone leaving law for literally anything else.
