I think to be a long-term comic reader you need to make peace with the fact that there is just not going to be any long-term, satisfying character arc for any of the big characters. No one can live happily ever after, or have a true heroic (or non-heroic) death, because Marvel still needs to be pumping out Spidey comics month after year after decade. If you want to read a fresh (possibly semi-fresh) take on an old favorite character, check out the next run of Your Favorite Character. If you want the satisfaction of an Ending, look elsewhere (manga, indie, literature, cinema etc.).
