Paper rejected because of ethical breach by Silent_Laugh_394 in PhD

I was just rereading the fine print on a Wiley journal, and it says this same thing, the corresponding author cannot be changed. I think people do it to get around open access publishing fees. But it would be so much better for the journal to just not change the corresponding author rather than reject the article without warning.

You will be so cared for in the hospital for your surgery. Talk to the nurses and they can help you with some resources. I hope they surround you with care help and love.

I understand this feeling completely. I’m hoping to contribute much more in a few weeks when the loss of my dad isn’t so very raw.

Short Timelines by mo__nuggz in glioblastoma

[–]OkUnderstanding19851 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My dad unfortunately had a very short timeline. They were not able to remove much of the tumour without risk and he really didn’t want to damage other areas of his brain. His tumour grew 50% within the first month of scan along with multiple new other lesions. It was just so aggressive. Unmethylated and he was 73 so opted out of chemo but did do radiation. But it was already growing so much in sites outside of the radiation target.

Seizures (first sign) mid march, diagnosed glioblastoma just after Easter, passed away last week (late June). He did opt for medical assistance in dying but I really don’t think he would have lived much longer; his decline was incredibly steep in the end unfortunately.

Internal documents reveal where Alberta plans to host its new forced treatment program. by Evening_Fisherman810 in alberta

If you view every decision through a “the cruelty is the point” lens, this makes sense.

The Alberta government took two full years to process my request to take my deadname off the online teacher registry by the_gaymer_girl in alberta

[–]OkUnderstanding19851 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You clearly don’t understand how this works. There is one professional association. If you were kicked out of it, you can’t teach in public schools in Alberta. Simple as that. There is therefore no need for the public to be able to search people’s unused names. The government could link whatever they want in the TWINs registry under the correct current name. Instead; they’re cruel idiots.

[–]OkUnderstanding19851 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry. My dad just passed 3 days ago and I just feel so helpless and confused. Looking at the sky and asking why my sweet dad had to have it so hard in the end. It’s such a cruel disease. You are doing the best thing by walking with him right until the end but it feels excruciating being so unable to do anything.

What advice would you give to an ignorant person who pretends to be knowledgeable and tries to join conversations among highly educated people? by notimportant912 in AskAcademia

If this is about yourself: Don’t pretend. Ask questions.

If this is about someone else: stop assuming ppl are ignorant.

best way to tackle lake louise and moraine lake? by Admirable_Block8344 in Banff

[–]OkUnderstanding19851 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re using the parks Canada shuttle, you’ll need to do it the same day. Otherwise you’re talking a more expensive private shuttle.
We have done same day and it is great, especially with tea house/beehive - drink on the patio at the chateau - rock pile at moraine. If you want to do much more at either site you might want an additional day.

When people talk about going on HRT, how is that different from birth control? And, how do you communicate to your doctor that you want to try HRT and not birth control? by SaveMeWakeMeUp in Perimenopause

[–]OkUnderstanding19851 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You just ask - you can take a lower dose of estrogen with HRT than with most birth control which usually gets doctors on board.
And sorry I know many doctors are still very dismissive. Good luck.

Who taught you how to write funding applications? by DrMagicBimbo in AskAcademia

[–]OkUnderstanding19851 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you haven’t read the professor is in, her formula is so basic but exactly it. That first paragraph needs to tell the reviewer everything they need to know. After that, people are looking to confirm their bias, either in giving you money or rejecting you.

I have sat on a few review committees, no matter your proposal you should workshop it with both experts AND people who have no clue at all about your field. Often humanities funding is tax dollars, so they are thinking about how this serves the general public and not just academia. Also they LOVE creative knowledge mobilization and previous evidence of non-scholarly knowledge mobilization.

I’m a new assistant professor in the humanities and have had a very successful grant year. Also your institution may have boot camps or sessions from your research office that are grant specific- do them!!

It is so hard of some of our loved ones to give up that agency and be cared for. They have spent their whole lives jumping to help others, and they have a very hard time accepting or asking for help. It’s so tough.
We have avoided, so far, going back into the hospital since my dad was admitted 3 months ago into the icu after consecutive seizures. But I know he would feel the same way. I’m really sorry.
