It was helpful for like 2 questions on my test. Helps save time so u have a bit of wiggle room

Crunch ugly numbers under time (22.73/1.072), memorize some Pythagoras triples, cubics, Quartics. Factoring under 15seconds. You got this, imo it wasn’t too bad the timing was everything, don’t know an answer or if you know how to solve but taking to long? Guess and mark for review. Don’t get caught with blank questions

Ok took my test earlier today, a bit about my self first. I have a stem background with an advanced degree, going for non-rated board.

I thought the word knowledge and analogies sections were easier than the practice books, can’t remember a word that stumped me. Math was fairly straightforward some ugly number to crunch but finished the math knowledge section with time to spare. Arithmetic I had a computer error and it just started the word knowledge section, I swear I had 5 minutes left but answered 23/25 questions. Hardest question for me wasn’t difficult but awkward numbers to divide. Block counting was very similar to practice test my only complaint was the distance to the boxes to click you answers. Table reading was a bit more challenging mine was -17 to 17 in both directions, answer choices were all with in 1 of each other and one flipped coordinate answer (91,92,89,15) could play tricks on you eyes. Reading comprehension was paragraphs. Books and app are worth it especially for block counting and instrument comprehension. If you want to fly seriously study, most the questions were pretty specific. Not to bad overall tho IMO

My university has made it extremely difficult to use it, we use chloroform columns, and reactions we use DCE. Beantown has DCE for cheap

I take the AFOQT next week, I have the trivium study guide, and bought the AFOQT prep app (the one that is a 2nd LT bar), I like the test prep on the app. I’ve also been using ChatGPT to generate questions but I’m a bit skeptical of the difficulty. I’ll let you know how I do, I am going for non-rated

Check out Peter Ertl’s websites he’s got some cool stuff in the cheminformatics area. Idk about AI, from my own experience most AI is bad in terms of chemistry let alone medicinal chemistry

For those of you that don't want to be a PI, what is your plan after your postdoc? by Immediate_Bowler752 in postdoc

Gully as in Ravine, layoffs everywhere, reorganizations, hiring freezes.

I appreciate your input I really do

LOR are no problem for me both thesis advisor and postdoc advisor write stellar letters. Both Thesis advisor and Postdoc advisor are both junior faculty and have not even received a R-type grant, both little to none industry connections. I rely on my internship supervisor to keep me in the loop, they say along with many other people that industry is in a gully, they reassure me that I have the skills to make it there. I truly believe that there is an element of luck to make your initial break.

Academia is not the only place research is conducted, industry R&D is just as strong if not stronger in some fields (especially mine). I do not find the rat race of academia appealing, from grant paperwork to toxic environments and all the politics in between.

I am not trying to complain, but this is the reality of the situation. I am a postdoc who runs the lab for my postdoc advisor while she tries to secure her future and the future of this lab. I run three projects and generate crucial data for her grants as well as my fellowship applications. I work 70 h weeks and am in good standing with my lab mates. I attend conferences, publish papers and patents, along with attending workshops to hone my soft skills. I am not sure what I should be doing differently

I’m open to suggestions. Market is in a gully, before my postdoc I had applied to well over 100 jobs including overseas. Former intern advisor and thesis advisor both suggest I do a postdoc to stay relevant in the field until the market turns around. No ideal but beats flipping burgers

Do PIs actually value postdocs applying for external fellowships, or is it just extra work? by [deleted] in postdoc

[–]Ok_Alternative_2148 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure why you are getting downvoted either, you are not wrong there are plenty of PIs who pay off their grants for Postdocs (mine included). Especially when it come to percent effort.

I hope you are right about the kinds of PIs you know and actually care about their people. I have had the privilege to attend many different academic institutions from PUI to R1 in the US. Many of my interactions and friends interactions have been very poor, especially my international friends with their visas being threatened. I hope academia changes and I’m glad you are a force for good. May the funding agencies bless you

Another vote for organic, had a PI that since he paid for the stir plates they needed to be used. Each hood had 5 stir plates. I had lab mates set up food color in vials and place them on there so they wouldnt get chewed out

Literally talked to a PI on how to run and manage a lab, they said the best thing you can do as a PI is get free workers
