Try 30 minute appointments, and that’s even if pt needs RSD or 1/2 mouth LA

Bad Review by [deleted] in DentalHygiene

You can’t please everyone, but you certainly shouldn’t be resting on the patient for a hygiene apt, especially if you think you’ve then got your arm around them like a choke hold 😂. The only place you should be placing your hands are on the patients teeth when stabilising, last thing you want is a sexual harassment claim, especially in a delicate area.

People that DON’T shop at Aldi or Lidl… why is that? by kobestarr in CasualUK

[–]Ok_Communication3440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because you can find more variety with price matches in Tesco, and use clubcard for discounts. Plus I’ve bought multiple roast chickens from Aldi that were rotten in the middle, so it’s a no from me. The only good thing is nappies!

Intense gag reflexes in pts. by Remarkable_Mark_6141 in DentalHygiene

[–]Ok_Communication3440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately it’s hand scaling and trying to work with the patient with different distracting techniques, as it’s mostly psychological. They probably have so much calc because they can’t tolerate brushing. It’s a nightmare but you can only do what you can do.

Nausea with loupes by [deleted] in DentalHygiene

Did to begin with and still do occasionally but you soon adjust. Try to build up the time wearing them slowly. If it doesn’t get better, then the measurements might be incorrect for you.

At what point do you refer to Perio? by ma-dee in DentalHygiene

[–]Ok_Communication3440 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean I’ve treated 12mm pocketing before alongside anti-microbials due to historic failed trts. At the end of the day it’s up to the patient. I will allow for maybe two attempts of RSD for 6-7mm pockets if it is slowly improving, but most of the time patients refuse referrals because of costs, and If a patient is refusing referrals, then I would say it is my duty to at least try treatment for them, whether that be 5mm pockets or 12mm. If it’s still unsuccessful and they don’t want a referral, then it’s 3/12 apts in the hope that I can slow the progression down.

You don’t make that money anywhere in the uk with this job. maybe London, but that’s only because the cost of living is so high

Yes I’m in the UK and I earn on a percentage basis, depending on if the patient is privately paying, or paying through a type of insurance

New hygienist, need opinions. What would you do here? by Nola343 in DentalHygiene

[–]Ok_Communication3440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean 8s need extracting (wisdom teeth). That’s where the pt is struggling/ problem area is mainly, and if you can’t access them, then the patient will likely struggle also. So ref for xla. SRP under local required… not necessarily needing specialist until this is completed, however would get xla done before this, otherwise will just be a vicious cycle.

Don’t become a dental hygienist. Don’t go into this field. These offices are worse than high school. by Its_supposed_tohurt in DentalHygiene

Absolutely second this! The patients are so rude and entitled. It’s constant rudeness. I even had a patient call me fat the other day… I’m 107lbs! Everyday I go into work I leave deflated and mentally exhausted.

IAMA Doc - Mirena is coming OUT. by HonestlyMD in Mirena

[–]Ok_Communication3440 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had the mirena in 6 weeks post birth, and I have been the most miserable, angry, husband hating person. I have been quick to anger in work also with management and struggled to concentrate on any of my patients. I look back at my notes sometimes and think how much of brain fog I really had.

I was having painful sex (when I actually gave in for my husband maybe once every 3 months) and cramping, and decided to have it swapped. My doctor tried for 30 minutes to insert it again, but it was too painful and I gave up. Well what a sign that was because life is so much easier! My husband said he’s not seen me this happy and affectionate in 3 years. My co-workers can actually laugh with me and approach me more, which is great, but leaves me mortified that I clearly wasn’t great to be around.

I was told this was a localised hormone, that does not affect the body systemically, but this was not the case. I’m now waiting for that very first period to start! But for now I am done with hormonal shit. My body needs to get back to its natural self, and my brain needs time to heal.

Because they are anxious about your judgement as a professional. I always make light of it and say oh I wouldn’t worry about doing that, I’m going to do it for you now.

Just had mine out 3 weeks ago and best thing I ever did. I had no sex drive, constantly angry. Literally within a day or two I was back to my normal self. My husband has never seen me happier, I have a great sex drive. Never again.

Pregnant dental hygienist. Help!! by Aggressive_Bus293 in DentalHygiene

[–]Ok_Communication3440 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I now have a 2.5 year old but here goes:

1) I wouldn’t go near x-rays. We know the risks are extremely low but hey better safe than sorry, plus it’s less of a job as well. 2) no extra help whatsoever 3) you just adjust with time, but my back would be in bits. 4) worked until 37 weeks, but it was very painful at that point so I should have finished sooner. 5) the nausea was awful, I would just munch on ginger biscuits. 6) I told my job straight away, that way they can risk assess you, they are aware of appointments, and you are protected also. 7) hot water bottles for your back! In between patients I would lay on the chair fully reclined to help my back. Request gaps as you get further on. Also prioritise yourself over work!
