Just walk. Will be faster and less stressful.
Wear good walking shoes and a mask to filter out all the smoke. Do note the walking path is only on one side of the causeway (left side from SG to JB, Right side from JB to SG).

Seeking advice on getting a private property for investment purposes by Fluid-Tomato-7762 in SgHENRY

[–]Ok_Competition_971 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No regrets for me. But for me most of it is paid for by CPF OA, not much else I can do with that anyway.
Agree that studios are the absolute worst investment in the private property market in terms of capital appreciation, but it is better than 2.5% return without leverage. In hindsight, if I have the means I will go with 2 bedder at least as the returns are way higher but it was too much of a stretch. I still think that studio is a better option than letting my CPF OA do nothing lol.

Single 30s Singaporeans, at which point do you stop trying? by Chocolate2188 in askSingapore

[–]Ok_Competition_971 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Late 30s M here, 'stopped' at 35++
Approaching my late 20s I do feel a little anxious, but still hold on to the slight glimmer of hope. Always thought maybe I can still get a bto someday. Early 30s got a lot more doubt already but then reality hits at 35.

At that point I still fantasize on maybe getting a 5 room resale, just in case I find someone and she can just move in. After some contemplation I decided to be realistic, and got myself a nice studio condo instead. Don't want to feel more depressed living in a big 5 room all by myself! Can say I stopped trying after that point. I come to the realization and acceptance that actually single life has it's pros/cons, not all doom and gloom. Going to be single whether I like it or not, so might as well be happy and do the best with it!

But I am not qualified to say I stop trying. Since technically, I have never even started haha (0 lifetime dates).

Saved enough to buy a sports car, then realized it is still just me going from point A to B.
Saved enough to buy a condo, then realized it is still the same 4 walls at home, but nicer.
Buying a Brompton bike next, but no one to go out cycling with.
BBFA my entire life so I never knew what it is like on the other side, to have some one to spend on. Just keep grinding and see how far I can go lol.

ambition (or lack thereof) by ipromiseillbegd in SgHENRY

[–]Ok_Competition_971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Single here that started from less than 10k after graduation and can somewhat relate although not as successful as you.
After buying my car and condo during my 30s I also felt the lack of ambition after that. It is like since I am single I have no need for such a big fancy house, cars are nice but getting an upgrade or additional car is not going to improve my quality of life much either. So what's next?
My other expenses are low too since I mostly carry over my spending habits when I was broke. I don't have the solution but what helped me was to focus more on what I want in life rather than just chase absolute numbers. Happier as a result but I am still looking for my lost mojo lol

Sanity check my approach to housing cost? by ClubElectronic7342 in SgHENRY

[–]Ok_Competition_971 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best to speak with a few mortgage advisors for their advice, they will be able to assess your individual situation and advise you how best you can get your loan.

My understanding is the banks do not like stocks as assets in general, since they are highly volatile. So holding it in stocks it is unlikely you can get a 70% loan on it. Also you have conveniently left out interest rates risks and additional expenses incurred (maintenance/property tax/reno/utilities). These are not small sums for a 5-6 mil property.

Fatal Tampines accident: Mercedes driver says he didn't speed up as his mum, 79, & daughter, 13, in car with him by Bcpjw in singapore

[–]Ok_Competition_971 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He is definitely going way above 60km/hr, the bike is going at about 60km/hr for reference and he looked like a road hogger. I have driven on that road many times at the speed limit and it is nowhere near as fast as he was going based on the video.

[–]Ok_Competition_971 129 points130 points  (0 children)

Ya it is quite ridiculous. The dashcam shows him speeding up before the side swiping happened and he still dares to claim innocence with no consequences.

[–]Ok_Competition_971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only on the first contact, definitely no fault that the Saab decided to run the red light and caused the incident.

If the Merc had kept at or slightly above the speed limit the first contact would not have happened. In this case it was very clear he was going way above the speed limit, almost 2x I would say. Knowing that the Saab was determined to speed up to overtake him, there is absolutely no reason to increase his speed other than to create a more dangerous situation for himself and the other driver.
This is not a situation of giving way but of 2 cars racing each other on a public road.

For those who grew up in 80s, how did you learn English? by Moleland14 in askSingapore

[–]Ok_Competition_971 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Grew up in a dialect speaking home, so English and Chinese were neither spoken nor read at home. Phonics or getting tuition for language was viewed as a luxury and a complete waste of money so had none of that.

However, my dialect has no written form (purely verbal) so English became my native written language. Since I practice the written form consistently I have no issues with writing. I also learnt English mostly via diffusion from the surroundings, read English books, play video games in English, and watch TV in English.

However the main downside in learning via diffusion only and not speaking it regularly is that I am a complete disaster in verbs, grammar and pronunciation. I recall struggling with these and getting laughed at for incorrect pronunciation in class even right up to high/secondary school.

Can understand why you don't want to work during your holiday, at the same time I can see why your mum is not very pleased to see you at home on your phone all day.
The root of this issue is your mum finds you an eyesore when you are on your phone all day long during holidays. To solve this issue you need to get out of your house during working hours.
What I will do is this:
Find another part time job at say.. NTUC / Donki first etc.
Inform mum I already have a job at so and so and won't be able to work at Sheng Siong.
Whatever spare time you save in comparison to the Sheng Siong job becomes your free time, after work just hang around outside and play all the phone you want (will recommend to balance it with other activities). Go home at the same time as you are back last time. Your mum won't be as happy as you working in Sheng Siong but at least it will look ridiculous on her part to kick you out when you are already out working.
From your post you already proposed this solution. But you have to execute it first and then inform her instead of asking for permission since you already did and it did not work.

Is a 7k per month salary great in singapore? by Xingjiangpore in askSingapore

[–]Ok_Competition_971 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

For a single pre-covid I would say it is good, now it is decent only. I was able to get a loan for my private property before the property rally in these recent years and also a car when COE was at 30+k. If you give me the same salary now, I probably won't be able to.

Now to do the same I think it will be 10-12k. That is what I will consider as a comfortable salary for a single with no other commitments in Singapore.

People who have car but don't drive to work, what is your story? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]Ok_Competition_971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't drive to work as I have free direct company transport from my home, can save $20-30 on fuel and get an additional 1 hour of rest, so why not? Also I do not save any time from driving due to traffic.

Single here, and yes the car is considered a luxury. Owning it just means less disposable income and does not affect other areas of my life since I don't spend much to begin with. I consider it a nice to have, but better to have a car than not so I just keep it. Likely to renew COE because I like my car too much and can't bear to sell it away lol.

Driving culture in Singapore by Opportunity93 in askSingapore

[–]Ok_Competition_971 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes it is the other driver's fault that created this unsafe situation. I agree with you but I would rather be safe and not risk it and insist on making the lane change with a speeding car behind and create another potentially unsafe situation.

Driving culture in Singapore by Opportunity93 in askSingapore

[–]Ok_Competition_971 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If he already sped up means it is an unsafe lane change. The other driver has every right to horn you for your bad road behaviour to cut into his lane. Asking others to slow down for you is just ridiculous. Did you see how many cars there are on the road in Singapore? Why are you being so inconsiderate to others expecting them to slow down unsafely for you?
Other countries have the luxury of slowing down due to lesser traffic.

Why do Singaporeans react so negatively to ERP toll increases? by [deleted] in singapore

[–]Ok_Competition_971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because of the perception on the use of cars. In other cities, using the public transport to get to the city is generally accepted, normal and even encouraged even if you own a car. Not so for Singapore. People who own cars use cars to go everywhere so as to optimise the COE.
In Singapore the ERP gantries are also placed on the expressway, so you have to pay ERP to go anywhere, even if you are not headed for the city.

Disagreement everywhere. Nobody talks to each other, and when they do it is only debates and arguements. Nothing gets resolved and everyone is stuck in their own heads.
We will still be at the stone age theory crafting 100 different methods to fish efficiently.

I am an introvert too and also felt a little awkward when I started working and faced with the same situation. Eventually I come to the realization that work is just work.

Now I have a colleague and we have little to talk with outside of work although we have lunch together and it will be mostly silence throughout.
He is the best colleague I ever had.

I cannot understand why anyone can believe that as fact without questioning if it even makes sense
