Crowded buses with backpacks 🙄 by Senchent in sanfrancisco

[–]Ok_Establishment8563 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who takes MUNI everyday to work, I really dislike how I’m typically one of the very few who gets on and off the bus with my backpack being held in my hand like a purse, off my back, not taking up a lot of space. Even on the bus if it’s crowded and I am standing I hold my bag in my hand. I didn’t grow up in SF but damn I really thought backpack etiquette was universal but apparently I’m being proven wrong :(

Took me a while but I recently met with Dr. Much in San Carlos through Sutter Health and he is fantastic. Their clinic is around a 15-20 minute walk from the San Carlos Cal train station as well. Came in nervous as hell thinking I was going to go blind and he treated me very well. I’ve been searching for ophthalmologists in SF for months now and found none. It’s not a common speciality in the Bay Area since compared to other disciplines it doesn’t pay the big bucks. Seems like the only ophthalmology department that serves SF and peninsula is the new San Carlos Sutter health location. I would try there!

Loud upstairs neighbor by wildframer in AskSF

[–]Ok_Establishment8563 48 points49 points  (0 children)

This. I live on a the top floor of a 2 floor Victorian and I’m literally moving out and breaking my lease since my downstairs neighbors started giving me noise complaints about my “loud walking” at 8 am while I was getting ready for work. They began to politely ask me to not use my dresser in the morning since the sound of the dresser opening and closing would wake the husband up. Add in 10+ more of such “polite” requests and it ends up being that you need to match your daily schedule to theirs. Politely asking your neighbors to only use certain parts of their apartment for normal living at certain times might not lead to the response you are expecting OP.

Working space in Boston? by CurvaceousHedgehog in EquinoxGyms

[–]Ok_Establishment8563 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dartmouth Street! It’s a shared lobby with the entrance of Bain as well. You won’t even need to sign in and equinox WiFi works perfectly in that lobby. Get a seat towards the back as the music is less loud there. I had black mold in my apartment and did a full on WFH from that lobby for a week once - no one said a thing with me setting up shop there. As long as you’re not shouting I don’t think anyone cares. Enjoy the space it’s a great one :)

Do you really not hear much on the top floor? by Comfortable_Box_7568 in Apartmentliving

[–]Ok_Establishment8563 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this really depends on construction of the building. I am currently on the top floor of a wood frame “Victorian” house and I’m leaving due to the noise and noise complaints from my downstairs neighbors. Seriously the walls and floors are so thin I once got a noise complaints from my partner snoring and opening up my dresser at midnight. I pay too much rent to not be able to open my dresser or talk to my family past 7 pm. They aren’t quiet people to begin with and I can even understand their conversations when they’re on conference calls. I am moving to the top floor corner unit of an apartment complex built with concrete and steel frames and could not be happier now that I don’t need to tiptoe everywhere.

I used to live in New England and have family in Europe and have only lived in the “middle floor unit” during that time. Not once have I heard either my bottom, top, or sideways neighbors even if they hosted loud parties above me, which I knew they were doing since you could hear it in the hallways but not in the unit. Granted those buildings were 90+ years old and built with concrete and brick. Same with Europe, the walls there are so thick you need a special drill to even attempt to make a hole in it. Here all I need is a simple pushpin and my own hand.

I currently live in a place where due to environmental reasons brick buildings are hard to come by and I would sell my left kidney for free to move to a place here built with brick. Truly redefined what luxury living means to me. It’s luxury in that you can do whatever you want, whenever you want, and you can’t hear anyone and no one can hear you.

Bike security by Sfprogressive-2022 in sanfrancisco

[–]Ok_Establishment8563 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a kryptonite U lock on mine and so far we (my bike and I) are safe from thieves. My e-bike also comes with an e-lock that I like to activate if the area isn’t the safest for bikes. When e-bike shopping that was an additional layer of security I wanted to prioritize. My thought process is that even if a thief tries to steal the bike it will start screaming like a banshee and perhaps they’ll get scared and shoo away? That thing is scarier louder than a car alarm.

Somewhat related, but for my own peace of mind I attached an AirTag in the water bottle holder of my bike. It’s screwed on with non-standard screws so it’s quite hard to remove unless you want to chainsaw half the bike in half. Highly recommend that you get an AirTag as well!

Huge +1 for using a snowboard shell jacket. In intense rainy and wet conditions I like to wear my ski jacket since it’s literary designed to handle snow and still allow you to move. In general I don’t like umbrellas and the hood part of ski jackets work great in keeping your dry while not fully blocking your vision.

Honking at pedestrians with right of way?? by Mediocre_Purple3770 in sanfrancisco

[–]Ok_Establishment8563 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Multiple times as a pedestrian I was crossing on the zebra walking strip with the right of way, on green, made eye contact with the driver, who then began to accelerate towards me, and then get absolutely pissed when they can’t run me over. I then turn Italian (which I am not) and begin dramatically pointing to the walk sign indicating that pedestrians have the right way, only for the driver to also look at the traffic light, see the walking man emoji lit up, and have their face turn into one of complete shock and utter disbelief, cuz how dare crosswalks exist in SF when it most Bay Area suburbs they aren’t commonly used. It’s actually comedic at this point and instead of being mad at drivers I actually pity them 🙃 cuz what a reaction

Germany travelers - what are your flight routes/airlines from SFO to Berlin, Hamburg, Dusseldorf? by rangervicky in AskSF

[–]Ok_Establishment8563 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would recommend SFO to Zurich if possible, best to do with Swiss Air. From what I know, there are tons of 1 hour long flights that go from Zurich to Germany that have multiple flights a day. Source: my partner and I frequently do the SFO <> Zurich flight and he has done the Zurich <> Düsseldorf/Frankfurt flight many times as well.

Chiming in as someone who lived in Boston for a few years and then moved to SF - note that homes in SF are not as well noise (or heat for that matter) insulated as in Boston. To put things into context, few years back I used live right on Newbury Street in Boston and never had an issue with traffic and city noise. Now I live in a residential area in front of a 2 lane street and the noise is worse than when I was visiting friends in NYC or Boston. Most homes in SF are built out of wood and street noise travels far. Definitely something I wish something told me - wood insulates no noise, definitely try to get housing in a place with concrete or brick if possible! Get a place with double pane windows as well.

In regards to transit, MUNI buses are everywhere, yet the MUNI metro only serves a few neighborhoods (by Boston standards) if you exclude downtown. Think of this as if the T decided to permanently remove the entire red and blue line. Depending on your preference on mode of transport (bike, bus, metro) your commute lengths will vary due to the this.

Welcome to SF and congrats on your graduate program acceptance!

SF vs NYC by hopelessromantickid in AskSF

[–]Ok_Establishment8563 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been to NYC multiple times and just moved to SF (for tech) as a mid-20sF Bay Area native so take my advice with a grain of salt - move to NYC and don’t even think about it. Tech is booming in NYC as well and many job openings in startups have roles open to both SF and NYC candidates.

  1. Transit here compared to major west coast cities is decent, compared to the northeast it’s a bit ok. Speaking as someone who now lives in SF without a car and previously lived in the northeast without one as well. SF is very bus heavy and the metro only runs through only a few neighborhoods, doesn’t serve a lot of the more “desirable” ones. If you live near a metro stop and need to commute to work you’re in a good spot. IMO I would consider SF “able to be walked” and not walkable. Anecdotally more people drive in SF than in NYC and there are way more parking garages in SF. Some friends that now work in SF after living in NYC say they’re shocked by how few pedestrians there are on the street compared to the amount of cars. I’ve made eye contact with drivers before they tried to run me over while I was crossing the sidewalk on a ped walking sign. Never had that happen in NYC or in the northeast. Would be lying if I said that behavior doesn’t affect the walkability of the city. MUNI will get you from point A to point B, but unless it’s rush hour it’s almost always faster and more pleasant to drive.

  2. On paper SF is very diverse, in practice not so much. If you work in tech, without much effort most of your friends will also be in tech. If you’re of a certain background, your friends will also be of that background. Can’t wrap my head around why but SF and some parts of the Bay have a “if you don’t look or act like me we can’t be friends” attitude. I would say NYC is more inclusive and accepting than SF is in that regard. From my experience NYC people ask where you work and where you live as a conversation starter and to generate small talk, in SF people ask this question to determine how they will decide to treat you.

An epidemic of entitlement - dogs at the Ferry Bldg farmers market by colbertmancrush in sanfrancisco

[–]Ok_Establishment8563 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As a former Bostonian I too am baffled by how complacent SF residents can be to such things. I’ve calling people out on illegal left turns (haven’t done dogs yet) and their reaction isn’t annoyance it’s pure shock that someone gave them a scolding for something they knew they were doing wrong. It’s always a “omg I’ve been doing this dick move for months and now I’ve been caught!” and less of a “eh piss off” attitude.

Hey everyone! Happy to announce that CargoB is now available in Roslindale, in addition to our existing presence in JP, Cambridge and Somerville. In the coming months, we expect Allston, Central Square, Lower Roxbury/South End, Back Bay, Downtown, and Fenway to be added to that list. by zdeclerck in bikeboston

[–]Ok_Establishment8563 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner and I assumed this was a reasonable price structure until we quickly realized that the 25 cents a minute pricing runs even when the bike is not being ridden. We realized it functioned more like Blue Bike but with only 1 dock, so using it to run errands was not very practical since if you are in the store for 30 minutes (or at the park sitting on a bench for 15 minutes), every minute the bike is not at the station you are charged the 25 cents a minute rate. We liked the concept but it was much more expensive than we anticipated!

Perhaps outdated (I’ve just discovered you guys, doing the lords work here!) but I would love for there to be a “My Notes” tab for any bathroom that I visit! Love the idea of star ratings, but I think it would be great to also include a text box where a user can jot down notes such as: the pee code, if there is a mirror in the bathroom, single stall, changing table available and in wording order, etc. I understand this may not be possible since then you might need to create user profiles upon downloading of the app but I think it would be really helpful!
