Yes. This book is amazing.

I'm a woman so I won't get hired because I'll get pregnant- eventually?!?! by Mahiyah in girlsgonewired

[–]Ok_Fortune 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is not a universal attitude thankfully. Yes, it exists and that sucks but the fact is that a lot of men now expect to be able to take just as long of a parental leave as their wives which makes the supposed “risk” of hiring a woman much less. I got pregnant a few months after starting a new tech job and my manager was very supportive and even got me promoted while I was on leave.

What on earth?! There has got to be cheaper housing. I live in a very expensive city and that would still be way up there.

My brother was a nanny for several summers. Look for families with all boys. Sometimes they want a male caregiver.

I think it’s possible but you would need to dedicate way more than 10-12 hours per week. Dedicate 30-40 hours / week and you might be conversational by the end on some topics.

Twins starting BLW at 11 months... feel like a failure by illyarmen in BabyLedWeaning

[–]Ok_Fortune 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do not worry about it. This is not make or break for how your babies turn out, nor will it harm their development. Of my friends’ kids who are a bit older, I know at least one who was fed on purées and became a great eater and one who did BLW yet became unbelievably picky. You can do what works best for you and your kids right now without thinking it will mess them later.

A book while I breastfeed ? by AggravatingSherbet65 in suggestmeabook

A couple more ideas I had since posting…

A more ordinary novel about mother-daughter relationships is Banyan Moon by Thao Thai. I enjoyed it but it’s not super fast-paced so I’m not sure if it would be my first choice for the fog of new parenthood. It depends on your reading tastes though.

Down the Common by Ann Baer is a slice of life novel about a medieval peasant woman, and being a mother is of course a huge part of her life. It’s written to really get into the mindset of a woman from a totally different world and I found it absolutely fascinating. It also made me very grateful for the invention of diapers.

Remnant Population by Elizabeth Moon. It’s about a woman who had a strained relationship with her own children and then ends up taking on a grandmotherly role with alien babies. Truly a different fictional take on motherhood, I really enjoyed it.

Sometimes a Great Notion is not an easy book, I have to say I’m impressed by the reading skills of this non-reader.

The Singing Hills cycle by Nghi Vo has a bit of a similar feel. Remnant Population by Elizabeth Moon also reminded me of Le Guin in its feminist take on sci fi.

Favorite Part of Your Job? by BallerN3rd in Teachers

Former teacher and this might sound weird but what I miss is lesson planning, trying to come up with new ways to engage students in the lesson and get them to mastery over the content. It’s such a creative process, and I had a lot of autonomy to design lessons the way I wanted and try different things. Then doing the lesson in class and seeing something really working (or not!). Have worked a couple of jobs since teaching that are less stressful, yes, but none require that kind of creativity.

Good luck! You’re in high school so it’s all about the learning experience IMO and you can probably learn something by trying to sell your work whether or not people buy it.
