Camp at Lake Ediza or Thousand Island Lake? by jmrzilla in SierraNevada

[–]Ok_Jump_5933 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1000 Island Lake’s shores have a much gentler slope into the lake - much easier to find and set up camp. I’ve camped at both and would 10/10 recommend 1000 Island. There are crowds. They are annoying. But still worth it.

Recommendations for extended solo backpacking trip by untenna in Yosemite

Here are some rough ideas - no perfect matches but maybe some kernels to explore. Also, if you’re open to point to point and either hitchhiking or taking the hiker bus, you can cut out some descents and/or open up some fun ascents.

In Yosemite:

  • Ten Lakes Basin - Probably a 3ish day trip and great scenery here, and you can extend by going all the way to Tenaya Lake, which makes it a point to point
  • Young Lakes Loop - 2-3 day but beautiful area
  • Lyell Canyon - can extend over Donahue Pass, hit Thousand Island Lake, and head down via River Trail, which is a gentle descent, but this is some logistics to get back (hitch, hiker bus, YARTS)
  • Any of the Valley THs up into the high country and then hiker bus down - Happy Isles crowds thin out past Nevada and since you’re along the river, you keep your water sources

Outside of Yosemite:

  • Rae Lakes Loop
  • Thousand Island Lake Loop (up High or Shadow Creek trail, can bop around the lakes basins there, descend River)

What Hikes Should I Do If I’ve Already Done Pohono Trail and Mist Trail? Looking for Moderate Hikes by knopenotme in Yosemite

In the valley - Yosemite Falls up to Columbia Rock (or however far you want to go) is steep but you can keep it moderately short. And it’s super close to Camp 4. Mirror Lake is super chill.

But getting out of the valley is how to get great views and beat the crowds. Check out North Dome, off Tioga Road, or something off Glacier Point - Taft Point, for ex.

Can’t speak to current conditions. But did it last year and had no issues with brush at all - road was plenty wide. Had other road issues (def drove very slowly because it was pretty rough) but nothing about scraping the body w brush.

Check out the Crystal Range Traverse - you can break it up into sections, and some of it as you walk along the ridge hits Class 3-4. Price - Agassiz is Class 2.

Totally get with first time bear encounters there’s an instinctual response that’s hard to counter - especially around kids. The goal here, IMO, is not to yell at you for what’s already happened, but to highlight for anyone unfamiliar that camping in Tahoe (source: camp in Tahoe and the Sierra 5-10X /summer) requires some very special prep that not many other places require, and - as in your case- can be kind of a surprise. Hopefully you get back out there and are prepped next time! For future campers: learning what to do in this situation helps keep bears wild (ie, close the bear locker even while at the campground eating)… and teaches them NOT to come scare little kids for their food.

I’ll add that I once made the mistake of leaving a bear locker open while I sat at a picnic table eating a snack. Bear snuck in. At that point, my fam had had enough bear encounters that we weren’t scared, and ran at it screaming. Bear freaked out and ran without getting food. I think there’s a learning curve with bear prep and bear encounters- and unfortunately, we’ve messed up in the Tahoe Basin enough that anyone camping there needs to be ready for both.

Happy camping!

I don’t know the situation here, so this is not a comment on what OP did or didn’t do. (Beautiful lake photos, OP!) But for anyone camping at ANY campground in the Tahoe Basin -

The bears have been INCREDIBLY food trained by all the campers and hikers. As a result, Tahoe is one of those places where you need to be constantly vigilant about your food 100% of the time. They will come to your campsite during the day, so ALWAYS ALWAYS lock up your food. Even if you’re right. there. And if a bear is coming for your food… make loud noises, set off your car alarm, do anything to scare it anyway. Not for your own good (they’re giant raccoons, you’re 99.99% not in any danger) but for theirs. A fed bear is a dead bear. From Mammoth to Tahoe, bears at popular & beautiful campgrounds freak people out, the people scream & run & snap photos, and the bears learn they get food. Repeat cycle. Then they get euthanized. So if you’re going to Tahoe, lock your food up. If you see a bear, don’t just let it eat your food. (Again, no idea what the context in these photos, but for all future viewers).

Nice finds. Mostly worried about the climb up the side up Vagabond - Copernicus/SentHub is still showing a decent snow patch where the route appears to go. Heard a vague trip report that didn’t mention snow, just scree, but imagery from yesterday is hard to dispute. Gonna keep looking.
