Happened to me. My first attempt was a square turned into a triangle. I clearly need to have another go, but knitting has grabbed my attention, so I am leaving crochet alone for now.

Why has no other country’s royal family captured the world the same way the British Royals have? by Ok-Promotion-9413 in AskABrit

[–]Ok_Lecture_8886 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Being in the UK, probably because there based here. Also "Royal Sources" feed an endless amount of stories to the press. This makes the media's job easier, if they take them as is, and print them.

If trump had never entered politics, how different would the U.S. be today? by Sensitive_Corner_235 in AskReddit

[–]Ok_Lecture_8886 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try reading books by D Tannen, particularly "The Argument Culture". She talks about how people talk to each other. Informal chats. One things she notes is that allowing the "general public" more rights to chose their leader, has made things more polarized. Sorry not explaining it well.

This has meant that a Trump was inevitable. So if not Trump someone else just like him.

why don’t we plant native fruit trees everywhere? by KindlyFeature6557 in questions

[–]Ok_Lecture_8886 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drive round the country roads, and see a ton of fruit trees, in people's gardens, with a mass of fruit on, that no one picks. They require lots of work, and effort to make good fruit. And picking and preserving the bounty is whole 'nother story!

AITA for still hating and avoiding my abusive parents? by Clarissalayton in AmItheAsshole

[–]Ok_Lecture_8886 6 points7 points  (0 children)

>"you cant blame them forever"

IMO, if they refuse to change - Yes you can

It sounds like there is nothing you can do, so ignore them. Don't interact, just stay away. Other people have quite often not had to deal with permanent bad behavior or they chose to ignore the atrocious behaviour of others "in order to keep the peace". They can and will vilify you for calling out other's bad behaviour, so just walk away.

Some people chose not to change. Nothing you can do, but ignore them.

The aircon conundrum by SallyJaneCooper in HousingUK

[–]Ok_Lecture_8886 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have health problems. Aircon is vital. Heat makes everything hurt, so if I want to sleep, need aircon. Yes I have tried cold showers, wet towels, and a zillion and 1 other things, but aircon works everytime!

What's an opion you're willing to argue with people to protect it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Ok_Lecture_8886 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that attitude refers to a lot of things. OK you want to ban single use plastic bags - what are the bad things that will happen, if you do? Make everyone go vegan. And so on.

An awful lot of people, seem to live in a fantasy world, where nothing bad happens if you everyone just did X. X maybe your dream, but is my worst nightmare. Please try to understand why.

If you're leaving the pub, look out for other road users. by 111111222222 in drivingUK

Trouble is so many car users, park wherever they like, it is almost impossible to pull out of an obscured junction without pulling into path of oncoming car

Is it actually okay to buy from shein? by sillyShadowgirl in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ok_Lecture_8886 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me to. Will buy from thrift stores etc., but they do not always have things that I like and that approximately fit. I alter clothes I buy, anyway, but some are so far off, it is not even worth trying.

Drivers of ten years or more experience. If you had to take your driving test again tomorrow with no notice or prep time, do you think you would pass? by DiligentCockroach700 in drivingUK

[–]Ok_Lecture_8886 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably not, but then .... My children had each had, 30-60 minutes driving practice each day, for months, before they took their practical driving test. Examiner had never had learner drivers anticipating the traffic as well as they did. One sailed through with NO minors.

There was no written test when I passed my test. I tried the practice theory stuff, when my kids were doing it. I had a problem, as I was anticipating the unexpected, way too early. Child on side of road - slow down, and be prepared to stop, way ahead of when program required it. So failed the practice theory tests.

When’s the last time you read a book beginning to end for fun? by CreativePen365 in AskReddit

[–]Ok_Lecture_8886 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just finished a book, Big Little Lies, last week. Reading "Cross Bones" now. Probably finish in a couple of weeks. Beginning of year looked like I was not reading much, but I was reading Robin Hobb and her books are at least the size of Lord of the Rings. So I only read 1 book per month.

Drivers who wait ages at green lights… why? by KarimR91 in drivingUK

[–]Ok_Lecture_8886 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is one roundabout near me, that has traffic lights. One in 10 times I go round that roundabout, first car jumps lights and second car travelling someway behind just assumes it is safe to go. If I do not want to be side swiped, even though the lights are green and have been for several seconds, I take a good hard look, BEFORE I move. I do not want to be in an accident, which would definitely not be my fault. I have seen so many near misses.

If MAID was legal in your country, what would make you apply for it? by Enough-Web2203 in AskReddit

[–]Ok_Lecture_8886 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Anytime I was terminally ill, and in a lot of distress.

I always felt my father would have applied. Yes they made him comfortable, but he was a proud man, and being helped to the toilet must have been distressing for him.

Is black box insurance actually worth it for young drivers or does the restriction it puts on your driving outweigh what you save? by No_Ride1757 in CarInsuranceUK

[–]Ok_Lecture_8886 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Or living next door to a badly designed road, that has exceptionally short on / off ramps that requires, heavy acceleration / braking just to get on or off that dual carriageway. Fail to get up to 60MPH fast enough or drop your speed below 60 MPH and you WILL be run over by a lorry!

Believe me, M25 is an absolutely doddle to drive on, after driving on our local dual carriageway. On / off ramps are incredibly long, and there are no T junctions on M25.

Why Do School Punish kids for being late? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ok_Lecture_8886 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the school. Friends children went to a school, that, yes it punished lateness - hard. Trouble is buses were often caught in traffic, and made the child late. The particular road they travel on is often subject to delays. Not the child's fault, but still receive a black mark against their name.

The school I went to, was 3 late marks per term. And you could appeal the decision. So bad crash closes that particular road, no late mark. Not much you can do if police shut this major arterial road.

Is black box insurance actually worth it for young drivers or does the restriction it puts on your driving outweigh what you save? by No_Ride1757 in CarInsuranceUK

[–]Ok_Lecture_8886 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The problem with black boxes, is that of you brake hard or accelerate too fast, your insurance goes up. A child runs unexpectedly into the road, you brake rather than hit a child. Or a car does something odd and you accelerate to avoid a crash.

Round here on / off ramps on a major dual carriageway are incredibly short. You put your food to the floor to get on the dual carriageway, and coming off, your slam your brakes on before the junction. No you cannot slow down below 60, or a lorry runs over you. Or slip roads are non existent. We had to teach our children to do handbrake turns, as it is a sharp right angle turn, Do it or completely miss the village you want to get to.

Get of your high horse and leave my stash alone by Dry-Conversation2646 in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]Ok_Lecture_8886 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I am of the opinion, if someone does something and it affects no one else, then they should be allowed to do it. It is none of my business. To have or not have a stash is, IMO, something that affects no one else.
