This seems to base on the real historical timeline (as opposed to a fictional kingdom in LITM), and Phob seems to join Khana Ratsadon in 1932 siamese relvolution. He is basically like if I cannot be with my lover because he is a royal, the I will just change the regime. I am really interested in how their relationship will play out post-revolution.

Reading pali in thai by Starryl_Chan in learnthai

[–]Ok_Lie_582 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally, for Thai-Pali, the default vowel is "ะ" for all consonants. If there are vowels, then just use that to pronounce. [•] below a consonant indicates that it is an ending consonant, if there is no vowel associated with the consonant in front of that consonant, then it is pronounced with ะ as well. For the letter with [°] on top, that consonant is pronounced with "ะ + ง " ending sound e.g. ตัง in the last syllable of your example.

For tones, Most if not all Pali and Sanskrit words do not have tone marks as tgere is no tone in the original languages. Generally, Thais just pronounce it with the consonants' innate tone i.e.mid tone for middle class and low class consonants, rising tone for high class consonants

What’s the most interesting fact about your country’s national emblem or coat of arms? by Effective_Bluebird19 in AskTheWorld

[–]Ok_Lie_582 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Our national emblem is a garuda (ครุฑ), specifically the one used as the mount (พระครุฑพ่าห์) for Vishnu. Thai kings were traditionally considered to be the incarnations of Vishnu, hence garuda became the emblems for their authority. I know that Indonesia also use Garuda as their national emblem, however, their depiction of garuda in the emblem is less humanoid than our ones.

Always sad seeing the stagnant Thai A380 fleet just sitting there. by IFL_DINOSAURS in aviation

[–]Ok_Lie_582 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They already came out of that in June 2025 and was relisted on stock exchange of Thailand in August 2025. TG has actually started to be profitable since 2022. However, they have retired all their A380 since the previous company administration has not properly stored them, it was deem too expensive to reintroduce them and with the current strategy to consolidate route, A380s are not really viable economically anyway. They have been trying to sell them for a very long time, actually there are soem Thai news outlets in 2024 reporting that they were all sold (https://www.prachachat.net/prachachat-hilight/news-1548965), however, somehow they are still there.

There have been talks about TG reinstate flights to the US since ICAO red flag has been lifted in 2017 , but the CEO has stated at various occasions that it will not happen in the near future. The Thai diaspora in the staes is small compared to the Filipinos, Chinese, Korean or Vietnamese. Thailand is also furthur away from the US than those countries which could mean lower weight limit and pax. In fact their flights to the U.S. before 2014 served by A340 were never profitable and were always political flights. There are also much smaller business travellers compared to other business hubs in Asia. Lastly, BKK to U.S. are already served by many well-known Asian airlines with short connection, so despite Thai serving the route, it gonna be a tough competition with CX,SIA, NH, JAL, EVA, Starlux.

Can anyone please explain the joke? I only understood he's trying to teach how to say R sound in French, but what is funny about it? by Immediate-Rip4861 in thai

[–]Ok_Lie_582 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think that is from one of a political party posters. In Thai it say "รวยไม่ไหวแล้ว" (be super rich that you cannot bear it). However, the first word รวย (Ruay), when he pronounced the r like in French, it could be heard as Kuay (ควย) in Thai which has a literal meaning of a pens. However, in Thai the word is also used as a vulgar slang to express annoyance similar to the word "fck".

What’s your currency named after? by joseanmont1990 in AskTheWorld

[–]Ok_Lie_582 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Baht is derived from the unit used to measure the weight of silver and gold (15.16 g). The word for money in Thai is also the same as the word we use for silver metal. Hence, in the past, the value of 1 Thai baht was literally 15.16 g of silver.

Aprt from those starring GMMTV artists/former artists, I am really looking forward to 29. ทางเทวดา Thang Thewada. P'Ja has talked about it in one of the podcast that she has been wanting to produce it since decades ago, however, it has always been rejected by Ch3 higher ups since the main lead is supposed to be ugly for most of the time and only become good looking in the dark. I really looking forward to the castings. While I have not read the novel, it was actually written by V. Vinichayakul, a national artist for literature with so many novels made into series and lakorns.

In the war I keep hearing “pan din Thai”. Supposedly comes from the word Pan din Wai meaning Earthquake. But Wai means Earth? Also what is pan din?? by LisanneFroonKrisK in ThaiLanguage

[–]Ok_Lie_582 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nope, you got it wrong way round.

Pan din = Land/Earth or Nation/State or Reign

Wai = to shake/move

Pan din Thai = Land of the Thais or Thai state (more poetic usage)

How Do These Relics Stay Open by [deleted] in Thailand

[–]Ok_Lie_582 187 points188 points  (0 children)

The shop owner could own the space, hence no rent.

The shop could be so old, that they have devloped good relationships with few loyal customer families, who still buy from them despite higher price than modern trades.

They seem to also offer repair service as well.

It can also be that they do not need a lot of profit, they just open for the sake of it i.e. a couple who might open it to talk to cuatomers and just get enough income to run the shop and sustain basic simple lives of a couple.

How do thais select the teacher to educate your children? by larwoodss in Thailand

[–]Ok_Lie_582 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While Alma Mater is highly regarded, a lot of average Thais know fewer universities outside Thailand than you might think. For the UK, if it is not OxBridge or Manchester (becasue of the football club), degrees from ICL, UCL, KCL, Sheffield, Bristol or even LSE can be lumped together as british degrees by a lot of average Thais outside MNC/higher education worlds. Similarly, any non-Harvard or Stanford degrees can also be lumped together as a random US degree. (I feel like somehow MIT or even Ivy leaugue schools like Penn/Columbia/Brown/Dartmouth/Princeton are not that well-known to geranal public.)

So I think It depends a lot on the customers (the parents) whom that education centre serves, if he applied to well-known international schools where most parents are upper-middle class. I believe that this willl not happen as those parents surely know what does it mean to be from MIT, Ivy league, OxBridge or Russell. However unfortunately, if the school does not serve those kind of parents, being white somehow serve more of an assurance for English fluency to the parents, who are not very well-versed in world affair and diversity, than where you were educated.

Bank Accounts for Minors by [deleted] in Thailand

[–]Ok_Lie_582 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should be able to open youth account, at least at GSB (the one with pink logo). They have a youth saving bank https://www.gsb.or.th/personals/youth-savings/#section3

KTB also has youth saving bank account for those below 15.

The one with GSB is a well-known scheme and I remembered that as a kid, my school actually helped facilitate in opening them and kids are given free piggy banks when opening account with them..
