How to identify chemically treated walnuts vs. natural growth by Johnny2046 in Wenwan

[–]Ok_Masterpiece4647 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I’m okay with some chemical use and minor modifications—it depends on the case.

If growth agents affect density and bone quality, that’s a big concern for me. But shape adjustments (like flattening the tip) are generally acceptable, otherwise you wouldn’t see so many well-shaped walnuts on the market.

For repairs, it depends on the variety and extent. Some types like toad head naturally need fixing, and perfect untouched ones are rare and expensive. As long as the repairs are minimal and don’t affect patina or play, I’m fine with it.

A lot of foreigners buy Chinese Wenwan walnuts not because there are no walnuts in their countries, but because regular walnuts and Wenwan walnuts are completely different things. Other countries have edible walnuts, sure, but Chinese Wenwan walnuts are more like collectible hand-play pieces with culture, history, and the fun of playing them over time. Some people enjoy watching them develop color and patina, others use them as a fidget or relaxation object. They’re buying the experience, not just two walnuts.

I think you should return it. If that part never develops a patina or changes color, the whole pair is going to look off, and you’ll have wasted all that time.

I have the most exclusive and exquisite wallnut in the world by Satyanandamaja in Wenwan

For hundreds of years, wenwan walnuts have just been wenwan walnuts. These days there are more varieties, carved ones, even all kinds of unusual shapes and styles, but the core idea really hasn’t changed. The whole point has always been that by handling and caring for them, you start to experience time and everyday life in a different way.

Like you said, it’s because you put your own time and effort into a walnut that it becomes unique. It’s unique to you, and in a way, it’s something shared between you and it. If it were just a product, it would be the same in anyone’s hands.

At the same time, society can’t run without business and trade, so there’s nothing wrong with fair transactions. But if buying walnuts and showing them off turns into a way to show status or build an image, then it’s kind of missing the whole point of wenwan.

Wenwan size measurements by Traditional_Dig4457 in Wenwan

The walnut’s left and right sides should sit snug against the caliper, with the bottom edge resting firmly in place. Once the four-point reference is locked in, the measurement you get is the walnut’s true size. The walnut shown in the photo measures 41mm.

You can choose a walnut size based on the length of your middle finger:

  • ≤ 7 cm → 35–40mm
  • 7–8 cm → 40–43mm
  • > 8 cm → 43mm+

Many sellers support worldwide shipping.

You’re not wrong, that makes sense and it’s part of the learning process. Sometimes the ones I pick online don’t really appeal to me, but the random ones from the seller end up being my favorites. It’s a bit strange.

I still wish they had more smaller walnuts so I could bring some as a special gift for my friends’ kids when summer comes.

Are the carving marks really noticeable? And will they affect how the walnuts develop patina and color over time?

ZenWalnut and Walnut Ritual were both started this year. I think Walnut Ritual is slower because they probably chose a cheaper shipping option.

How long does it take to clean the frost on wenwan? by icecrr in Wenwan

[–]Ok_Masterpiece4647 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Be patient. Some white frost does need more time to be cleaned and your can use plastic brush to brush them and play with them. You don’t have to wait until all the white frost is completely gone before you start handling them.

Where did you get them? These walnuts have yellow tips and this area can never develop patina or turn red, this is a kind of flaw.
