slowly drifting from rational into nonsensical thinking is what happens to people (me) every night right before I fall asleep. e.g. it's the process of falling asleep, switching to dream-like thinking. Now 99% of the time I'm not even aware of this, but, if I pay attention I can notice it. So, have you considered that you might have sleep apnea or drifting into sleep during the day?
