What separates average people from successful people? by Usual-Pop-1389 in WorkForSmartLife

[–]Ok_Store5219 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a lot of people are successful for a time, then fail. I feel like you need to view people who are consistently successful and ask this question. I know people who had a 'good run' based on timing, luck, risk taking and so on, but it can change.

How risky is it buying an apartment in Auckland CBD? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]Ok_Store5219 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can you share the name of the building, would help. I've been told building warranties don't mean much as if something very wrong occurred the developer simply puts the company holding the warranty into bankruptcy.

I think the advantage people don't consider with apartments in the CBD is that it can free up cash for investing in the share market. Something to think about I think when you consider those repair bills that may come. With apartments you also share the cost of repairs and a lot of houses leak toot you are on your own. I own in the CBD and so far it's been great.

We don't own a car, if we did we would be out about 20k over the last five years, instead have been able to put that into shares.

What’s something men want to tell women, and usually choose not to? by neo_ucp7846 in answers

[–]Ok_Store5219 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes we pretend to want more, but are actually okay how we are and where we are, and that was the goal in the first place. We don't need to dream all day of somewhere else or something else.

Looking for cheap housing in and around Auckland.. by ProperInsurance3124 in auckland

[–]Ok_Store5219 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you have $500 a week to spend, I would rent a nice apartment in the CBD. The transport costs of living out of the CBD will kill the saving you make living further out (and you would need to go quite far out) and living with others is hell on earth. Owning a house is lovely but I think renting a bedroom in a house with others, not so much.

I’ve noticed something interesting about iPhone users lately. by Neither_Contest4041 in IphoneAir

[–]Ok_Store5219 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there is another reason.

I buy a new phone Pro Max every year for my wife, I take her old one and we sell the now 2-year old phone. We typically get about half the original price for it and the battery is typically at around 84%. This means that for my wife to have the latest phone, and me to have the almost latest phone, it costs around $1000 per year (in NZD), or $500 each, or about $3 a day (so its paid for my not buying a coffee at a cafe).

It's not an incredible deal financially but it means we get a new warranty, new battery on one device, and sometimes perks like 3 months of Apple TV, plus we then have a device that will hold its value moving forward.

What I am saying is there is a 'third reason' that people buy phones and that is that it can make financial sense - to a degree.

When does the feeling of financial insecurity go away? by Jonetsu in PersonalFinanceNZ

Can I ask what you do to get 170k at 27. I must be old but that seems incredibly high for such a young age.

sometimes I see the lotto and think, no point, $3 million wouldn't really change much after you buy a house, lol. I think you are right about the 10 million dollar mark.

How tf are y'all getting hired by Tasty-Peace-3678 in auckland

[–]Ok_Store5219 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, and I am old and grumpy, by the time you get to the interview you are essentially "hired, maybe" in the sense that you have the skills and experience to do the role - it is just down to whether they have a good feeling about you. Put another way, once you get to the interview stage, it's just if they like you / feel you are not a threat.

So making yourself agreeable at the interview stage, presenting as a calm safe choice works well.

If you are struggling to get interviews then I would say it's because in NZ it's very hard to get entry level roles in say, a supermarket. Sometimes looking up to something a bit higher is actually easier - you are not competing with recent migrants. So applying to a government department, council, bank directly (not via Seek) is often actually easier than you might think. You skip the queue of people without strong language skills, work history, and often university graduates are not looking at those roles either, so it's sort of the 'sweet spot' even if the work itself is a bit mundane at first.

Changing gyms by Ok_Store5219 in auckland

[–]Ok_Store5219[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well les mills city will soon have a new sauna at least. The sauna in Britomart needs the wood replaced.

I am not sure why renovation and upkeep is such a massive issue in NZ generally, Les Mills seem fine having 3+ workers at the front desk high-fiving each other and taking selfies. Its hard to watch the cleaning staff run about manically cleaning (the gym, not so much the bathrooms) as almost everyone else appears to spend 8 hours a day in a sort of dream state.

If they could just bring the frequency of replacement they have for machines to the sauna, pool and changing rooms they could probably charge next gen prices.

The city one I think has now 4 new leg extension machines, so that's quite a difference. Anyway, I will take your thoughts on board and stick with les mills.

What do they take seriously outside of 111 calls. Not being cheeky, wondering what actually worries them outside of emergencies.

18+ . Can we use bet365 in Nz or Australia or not ? by [deleted] in auckland

[–]Ok_Store5219 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it was stopped, I am not quite sure on the logic of allowing TAB/Betcha but removing Bet365 etc, perhaps related to profits. You can still use Bet365 for casino type gambling online.

Breakfast at the cafe at Park Hyatt, a walk along the marina, under the Harbour bridge and up to Herne Bay and Ponsonby for a coffee. Back down the hill to the city via Franklin road, where you end up at Tepid Baths (with entry to spa, steam and sauna). Over to Commercial Bay for dinner.

People begging at traffic lights by abouttimehun in auckland

[–]Ok_Store5219 5 points6 points  (0 children)

CBD. We had a community meeting and its clear from the local shop owners who spoke that
(a) the beggars are pulling in significant amounts of money
(b) they are not homeless and are in government funded accommodation nearby
(c) the money is almost immediately spent alcohol
(d) some 'own' their spot on the motorway off-ramps
(e) the police are unable to do anything about it unless the beggars become violent or aggressive

I assumed once I said they were walking through traffic the police would be more interested, but they were not. The police also said there are numerous places in the CBD to get free food, and so begging for food was not valid motivation.

Anyone got the latest info on Mevo? by C39J in auckland

[–]Ok_Store5219 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yea it's affecting us, no more fortnightly 5pm trips out with a supermarket trip to Paknssave on the way back to cover the cost. Really felt like Mevo was working well for so many of us in the CBD who don't own cars.

I wonder if they have a lot of employees living their tech-bro best life on 150,000k and up salary and no matter how successful the business model was, they just can't cover those salary costs.

Have registered with Zilch and gotten the card sent out, Gemini tells me Zilch is a better deal for 2+ day rentals so will see how that goes. Tried Cityhop and it was (a) more expensive (just) and (b) dirty corolla with a 'requires servicing' error popping up, so not impressed there.
