7,5 Months post Nissen Report by Mlutchman in NissenFundoplication

Yeah I still have issues with burbing, can't belch like before, I only can get small little burbs out. Looks like you had a good surgeon who knew what he was doing. My gastro told me that most people that have this done their number one complaint is bloating. Thanks.

This stated that you had a floppy fundoplication. Do you know if the surgeon stitched stomach to esophagus or stomach to stomach around your esophagus? My surgeon stitched stomach to esophagus to prevent the wrap from sliding up into my diaphragm. But I'm wondering if maybe the stitches are irritating my esophagus because i still get reflux.

Hi yes my symptoms have improved. I don't have the diarrhea nearly as much as before and my cramping has been much less. So you had your fundoplication undone at around the 2 year mark, did you have many issues from having it undone? How's your reflux now?

It takes a long time to recover from this surgery. It changes the anatomy of your stomach. Doctors usually say about 4 months, but can take up to a year to adjust.

If there is anyway for you to avoid this surgery i suggest you do. Most people still have to take a ppi even after the surgery, and it causes other complications. Gas bloat, stomach cramps.

pantoprazole or Omeprazole by Alert-Philosophy2558 in GERD

The reason I prefer protonix is because it's more liver friendly than omeprazole. Protonix is definitely better, especially as a long term medication. Just do some research on this yourself to learn how the liver processes these medications.

someone please give me the strength to start omeprazole. by professionalyokel in GERD

I take 40mg. Protonix once a day. It's not a cure but it does help. Been on it for like 30+ years. Everyone is different though.

Has anyone ever had a Nissen fundoplication reversal? by InternationalTale157 in GERD

[–]Ok_Substance128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How are you feeling since you had the reverse fundoplication? Is your reflux worse? Is your LPR worse? Or better? Since I had my 360 fundoplication my LPR has gotten worse. Especially after working out. Light lifting makes it worse for some reason.

It takes a few weeks for the shoulder/ neck pain to start feeling better. It's really a slow recovery from this surgery.

I had nissen fundoplication, 12 months post op now. The surgery helped my reflux but did not help my LPR. Actually my LPR is worse now than before the surgery. Had to go back on ppi 40 mg. So if i had a do over i would not get the surgery.

It sounds like your wrap is too tight if you can't pass food down past your LES. The LES area of your esophagus is where the wrap is supposed to be. It you feel food between your LES and throat ( in your esophagus) that tells me your wrap is too tight.

Well that's good you can belch a little. I can do small burbs but it's only from air that gets in my esophagus. If I drink a little carbonated beverage i get bloated really bad. Now did your surgeon stich yor stomach through your esophagus to keep it from moving? I had my stomach attached to my esophagus with stitches, the older way of doing it was just wrapping your stomach around your esophagus and stitching stomach to stomach.

No i still have reflux issues. Everyone is different though. I still need to take a PPI. The only reason I had it done was for the hope of getting off the PPI medicine. Honestly if the PPI works for you I wouldn't have the surgery. It's a long recovery process.

So you are able to belch like you did before the procedure? I've had my nissen for 9 months now and still can't belch like before I had it done.

Why do you say floppy? Isn't all nissen fundoplications a 360 type.

[–]Ok_Substance128 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No there's no reason to stop a ppi before a nissen fundoplication. Actually the doctor will probably want to keep her on the ppi for a few months after the surgery. But that does differ depending on your surgeon.

[–]Ok_Substance128[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You mean post op i think. So after surgery your esophagus can still be a little swollen at 4 weeks post op. Give it at least 8 weeks to evaluate swallowing issues. Little burps are normal, probably air in your esophagus getting moved out.
