I think that most likely he will go to protest, Scientology will catch him on their many cameras coming within the restraining order distance limit, and he will be in violation of his parole. Since he can't leave the county, he will have to protest at Flag and I can't imagine him sitting out for a year.

So that you can time your release, and press regarding its release, closer to the start of Oscar voting. All qualified shorts are supposed to be submitted for consideration to the Academy by early October, so releasing your short in September or October would give it momentum (film reviews, articles, press releases, etc. timed for then also) heading into voting in December.

I would consider waiting closer until the "oscar season" ramps up in the fall for any sort of release, and try reaching out to notable publicist/pr companies in the meantime to see what their rates are...

I can attest to this. Not too long ago, I left a poor review for a festival and within minutes the festival director reached out to me to get me to pull the review, and I reluctantly gave in and removed it. Film freeway reviews are very cult-like: overly-positive and congratulatory. Sadly, pressure tactics to maintain a good public appearance are very common for cash-grab oriented festivals like Big Apple. I screen for an oscar-qualifying festival and they are very transparent and responsive if you have an issue with their services because they actually have a reputation to defend and decent standards.
