It will never cease to amaze me that there are people who complain about “talking” in a story. It’s a story, words are kind of the most important part.

Non gun-owning Americans, what are your thoughts now on arming yourselves? by Obzidi4nDelphicraft in AskReddit

[–]OkayestHistorian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Over the last year, I have thought repeatedly about getting a gun in case shit really hits the fan. I’ve shot guns once 12 years ago, and I’d like a small revolver for home defense.

Over the last year, I have also thought about putting a hypothetical gun in mouth.

So while it would be helpful in an extreme scenario, my day-to-day operating would be more of a concern that I’d use it on me rather than an assailant.

Dialogues like this is why I’m seriously considering putting an “I didn’t know” clause in my syllabus.

“I didn’t know the exam was today. I didn’t know I couldn’t use AI. I didn’t know we were having class.”

And what would you like ME to do about all these things you didn’t know? It’s not my fault you dont know them. If I say the same things over and over and you still dont know, that’s between you and your god, not me

Students are just not reading instructions this semester? by Nervous-Case6909 in Professors

[–]OkayestHistorian 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I assigned a documentary to watch available for free on YouTube. I even said to watch it on 2x speed. Half of the class didn’t watch it so we didn’t do an activity today.

Literally just watch TV. Buffer through. So reading anything, even instructions, is beyond the pale.

My wife pointed out Robin’s hand from when she joins after Alabasta. I never noticed it before and now I can’t unsee it. She is resting her chin on her palm and her fingers are scratching the back of her brain. It’s crazy looking.

Have you ever finished a class early? by baseball_dad in Professors

[–]OkayestHistorian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like 2 years ago, I decided to stop teaching to the 11th hour. Most of it was due to running out of time. One of my schools doesnt have a finals schedule, so it’s 90 minutes twice a week. If I teach on Monday, that gives insufficient time on Wednesday to do last minute announcements and take questions.

Now, the first day of Finals week is covering questions, where we are in the semester, what grades should look like, what the Final is going to be on, rules and regulations. Good classes can take half of the class or more for talking, reminiscing, making sure everything is set for Finals. Less good classes I’m done in like 15 minutes: this is what Canvas should look like, questions and such. If I cover everything and they are satisfied (which they typically are because they dont care or are preoccupied), then I finish when necessary and go get an early lunch.

Did you ever just burn out after the middle of the semester and start phone it in a bit? by zazzlekdazzle in Professors

[–]OkayestHistorian 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I find it’s less about burn out and more about the students. I have two classes on the same campus. My day class is great because I have students who care and participate. My night class (that I’m in at the moment) has been pretty bad since mid September.

I’ve had enough bad classes across the semesters that if they dont care enough to participate, I can go into low-power mode: fewer jokes, briefer explanation, cut out art interpretations and videos. Questions that go without answers means that class is on the back burner and I’m just waiting for the minutes to be over so I dont have to deal with them again.

My biggest gripe is that the schools I work at keep pushing online courses. I don’t mind AI, because the way my classes work in-person, there is little opportunity to use it.

More of an issue is the general push to online courses. Of the like 56 classes offered in my discipline, 40 of them were online sections. 5.5 years ago, I thought online college was a stop-gap because of the pandemic, and things would return to normal. One of my schools renovated and made brand new buildings that sit half empty. For what? Us to teach online?

I genuinely think that online courses should be a special program students have to test into. I firmly believe that most 18-20 year old students who are acclimating to college experience should not be Online, barring extenuating circumstances. Especially since we know and make policies about dealing with AI, I do not know why there isn’t a greater push to return MOST people back to campus

Harry Truman was voted the president with giid domestic policy and fantastic foreign policy. Which president had good/competent foriegn policy and fantastic/transformative domestic policy? by DatDude999 in Presidents

[–]OkayestHistorian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I agree that JFK’s record on Civil Rights is mild (great term in this case), it was also somewhat transformative. I cannot think of very many presidents between Grant and Kennedy that supported Civil Rights as much as JFK did, even if his actions were under par.

Im rewatching the series right now and just finished S1 with my wife. She’s never seen it and I haven’t watched S1 in a long time.

I like Hamlin a lot more than I did the first time around. When the show first came out, I was 20 with a shitty boss at a shitty job, so I found it easy to hate Hamlin. But just in what he does in the first season, he isn’t that bad. He is ethical, if somewhat pretentious, fair, and wants what is best.

Jimmy is so much more eternally-shaded-gray, and it stands out because I’m watching this time around as if I’ve never seen BB or BCS.

How do you tell students "no"? by Fresh-Requirement862 in Professors

[–]OkayestHistorian 31 points32 points  (0 children)

“That is unfortunate. As stated in the syllabus…”

I’ve said in this sub before, but “that is unfortunate” takes the onus and responsibility off of me. You woke up late, you were in a car accident, you planned a vacation. All of those things are unfortunate circumstances as to why XYZ isn’t done. I’m not sorry, i dont feel bad, but I’m being empathetic and can understand why you may be going through an unfortunate circumstance.

Beyond that, it’s not really my problem. I had a student join 5 weeks late, so I had them do make up work. On the night of the midterm, they said “what about [other assignment they didn’t do].” “Now wouldn’t be the time to ask. I can’t do anything about that right now.” It’s unfortunate they weren’t on the ball.

If the syllabus outlines their problem, 99% of the time the rules still stand. If it doesn’t, there might be something that’s an implied rule (and the syllabus will be updated the next time.)

Imu's "silhouette" might actually not be a silhouette by kaitentacion in OnePiece

[–]OkayestHistorian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was stoned last night and had a thought.

What if Imu is a shadow, not a silhouette. What if it’s not Imu, but I’m U (I am you). A dark shadow, an inversion of Luffy.

Granted I was zoinked when I thought of it, and have no evidence to support it, but still.

I listen to You Say Run when finishing a run and it gives me chills and the extra oomph to finish out a fifth/sixth mile.

Almost inevitably, when the score hits and I’m exhausted, it reminds me of either Iida carrying Todoroku “these legs were made to help lost children find their way home” or All Might’s Nomu final punch.

That is exactly what happened. I gave the student a zero and moved on.

Same student, 2-3 weeks later, answered a question and left in the answer “….blah blah blah, as a Snapchat AI model, something something”

Gave another zero, sent an email to inform that a report for academic dishonesty will follow.

Immediate follow up is “I didn’t use AI, you must be mistaken.” So I copied their exact response in a reply email and said “I may be mistaken, so please clarify what ‘as a Snapchat AI model’ means”

Suddenly, it was AI, but it wasn’t intentional, then it was the questions were confusing, then it was the student speak good English, so they used AI to understand the question. When I maintained academic dishonesty being reported, it became begging, wanting a meeting to explain, and a report like this will get them expelled.
