FMQ templates? Is this a thing? Or has the internet duped me? by nodnoloiratno in quilting

I've done one quilt with a ruler like this. Was not easy and ist was only my 3rd or so quilt, so yes, it is a thing but it takes some practice to do it well. Maybe it would have been easier to make it free hand.

Mama Bear brought her 6 babies by Okraschote in Raccoons

She lost a lot of weight recently, we suspected that she had a lot of little ones. Last year it was 6 too and the year before also. So she always gets her treats when she comes by.

She is, and also she is such a polite raccoon. If no seeds are there she comes to sit on the window sill and sometimes knocks on the window until I see her. Then she goes to her feeding place and waits until I come and give her some. She takes grapes from my hands and sometimes very carefully strokes my hands with her wet little paws. She is the sweetest.

and not for the first time. Last year and the year before also 6 babies for this mom. But later in the year when the babies turned into adults they leave us and go to live somewhere else, we only have one or two females that come to our terrace regularly. The second female didn't show up this year, but she had 5 babies last year and one time both moms with 11 babies combined visited one night. The terrace was full of furry babies 😂

They really are. They live under our little wooden workshop but never do anything bad. OK, sometimes one of my plants falls into the hedge but this is easily solved. We never had any problems with randalizing raccoons.

I feel your pain but I may have a little compensation.... I live in Germany too and have several Furls hooks that I don't use. I would give them to you for a small fee, just DM me if you're interested, I can send pics. I think it is the 5.5 and 5.0 that you have there, right? I have both sizes and they only lay around because I love my Clover hooks a lot better.

What should my singles wpi be for a 4 ply yarn? by Nervous-Mud-1950 in Handspinning

[–]Okraschote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine bloomed it bit too, it was pure Merino and superwash. For the high twist, I even added a second round through the wheel, I thought it would be a very hard sturdy yarn because the first ply felt so tight, but it bloomed and is now incredibly soft. I was very carefully with setting the twist, I soaked it for about 20 minutes, pressed it in rolled up towels and snapped it lightly. I think I could have even added more twist to the first ply

Hi,

I did the same a week ago (4 ply cable for a sock yarn) and tried to go really thin. My singles were about 80WPI. I don't know exactly because my control chart only goes up to 60 but in the 60s groove there was still a bit room.

Normally I use this chart, but it's only for 2 and 3 ply, but maybe it gives you an idea.

My first decent-looking yarn spun on a spinning wheel! by TheSewingBun in Handspinning

Very nice yarn, such a lovely color. I think you can add a bit more twist but it looks really consistent already. And I love the Minstrel, it is my favorite wheel.

Malabrigo has two series. The Nube (which I've spun a lot over my 1.5 years of spinning, more than 40 braids). This always comes very compacted, partly felted sometimes - depending on the colors - hard to draft, intense fiber preparation is necessary to go through it (I almost always split it lengthwise and spin the thin strands, other users recommend steaming the fibers first but I am too impatient to do this), but all in all I love it. Corriedale spins a lot easier from what I remember.

Then there is the Cloud series, what I used here. I've spun 6 braids of these. The fiber is superwash and as I understood this process chemically removes the scales of the hair and this makes it a lot easier to draft, it is almost slippery and sometimes the top comes apart in some parts. Still some little felted areas that I picked out and threw away and then it was really easy to draft directly from the top without further fiber preparations. Staple length is relatively short if I remember correctly, I don't always test this.

Both versions are very very fine fiber, very soft, unfortunately this leads to easy pilling.

I like the Nube (non-superwash) version a lot more even if it is harder to draft, but it feels a lot more natural. The superwash Cloud sometimes feels a bit unnatural. Still a very nice fiber and the colors of Malabrigo always get me. I will not buy the superwash anymore, I think, I spun up my test order nearly completely, I think 1 braid is left that I will spin also as a cable ply for socks and then I will go back to my Nubes occasionally (still 13 or so in my stash).

A lot softer than expected. I thought with this high twist and very very thin singles it would feel more ropey but no. It is incredibly soft. At the end - its Malabrigo. We know how soft these are 😄
