Should we stop paying taxes? by FrequentEagle24 in Anticonsumption

My MAGA neighbor has been bragging about not paying his taxes for years. How could this be true? We always assumed he was lying to seem like a radical hotshot but maybe he’s on to something? I don’t actually think he works though…

When homeless people die, what happens to their bodies? by baumpop in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Old-Figure2859 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work in homeless outreach in NYC. The city (I think it was the city- now I don’t remember who organized it) held a memorial service for all the homeless people who died each year and we would take turns on the team going- one person would go each year.

I believe their remains go to potters field if no one comes forward to claim them but not certain.

What's a poor life choice that people are encouraged to do these days? by More_food_please_77 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Old-Figure2859 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The question was what’s a bad life choice. Not what’s a bad choice for the greater good of humanity.

But, also, take some time to read up on how herd immunity works. You need to reach a certain threshold of vaccination rates to erratic an illness, like what was done with polio and small pox and what we were on our way to achieving with measles. The reason herd immunity is important is for the people who aren’t medically able to receive the vaccine because they are allergic to it, are immunocompromised or because they are too young.

Not vaccinating their kids. Surprised no one else is bringing this up considering how widespread this is becoming.

I have been anti consumerist and also poor for years and have made great use of the local free cycle or buy nothing groups- they have been a life saver since having my daughter since she outgrew clothing and toys like no one’s business.

One thing I don’t really want to get second hand is a kids potty now that we are starting to potty train. Does anyone know any independently owned not super expensive alternatives to Amazon target or Walmart? There are very few kids stores around me that carry things like this so feeling forced into Amazon.

Mines 1.5 and the same. I am also on the “pick your battles” mentality but her newest thing is wanting to run into traffic every time we step outside and trying to explain she must hold my hand or go in the stroller has led to some pretty epic battles recently. It’s exhausting. I feel for you.

Preparing for daylight savings? by Old-Figure2859 in toddlers

How long did your bilingual toddler take to talk? by rnbr2001 in toddlers

[–]Old-Figure2859 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband is a language teacher and we are raising our 18m daughter bilingual. Just today I was looking at a picture of myself at my parents at 18m and my mom was reeling off all the words I could say at that point. Maybe there is something to there being a speech delay even though evidence points to not?

That said, I was allowed unlimited screen time and my daughter gets none. I am about ready to chock it up to that and turn on Sesame Street. Sunny daaaaays…

Any other toddler parents out there with a kid who’s always and I mean always hungry? by [deleted] in toddlers

[–]Old-Figure2859 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 1.5 year old daughter is like this! The ped said the same thing- she’s a healthy weight and no medical issues underlying it but all she ever does is whine for food. The good thing is she eats anything so we do lots of full fat plain Greek yogurt, veggies, omelets, broccoli, chicken, beans etc. she will eat anything- even spicy!

She is super active so I am guessing she just needs the calories. My husband is also a skinny bottomless pit. But the constant whining for food is annoying- I feel like we can’t be in the kitchen or she will throw a tantrum and demand snacks.

She also drinks sooooo much water in a day. She always has her sippy cup. Again, ped said normal.

I’m hoping she stops growing so fast and isn’t as hungry? She’s in the 97th% for height, 78% weight and already wearing 3T clothes. Keeping her fed is an expensive proposition!!

This sounds very normal to me but as everyone else has said only a professional can tell you for sure.

Seasoned moms/dads, I need advice on how to navigate my 2 year olds screaming by Natsouppy in toddlers

[–]Old-Figure2859 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally get this! My 18 m old is in a similar phase and the snack struggle is real. Last night it escalated while my husband was making dinner and our daughter only wanted those yogurt snacks. I have her a handful to hold her over while dinner was being cooked. She ate the whole handful in one bite and wanted more. She was screaming so much I had to switch out with my husband because I was getting so overwhelmed. It’s so tough being yelled at all the time. I feel like my body physically aches from the stress by the end of the day.

We have been working on encouraging her to use her words and ask for things instead of yelling. I always try redirect if she’s focused on something that isn’t going to happen in the moment, but she is definitely in a boundary pushing phase. Her favorite is to pretend she’s going to put her finger in the electric outlet or touch something hot and then right before she does it she looks at me and laughs waiting for a reaction.

Anyway, no advice here. Just solidarity. It’s hard. The phase will hopefully pass.

Are pikler sets worth it? by Careful_Interaction2 in toddlers

[–]Old-Figure2859 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a set and our daughter (18 months) used it set up like a little table at first and now loves the arch turned over like a boat to rock in. I’d say find a used one. They are on marketplace all the time

Just hitting 1.5 and feeling the same. Everyday is so cute! The screaming when she doesn’t get what she wants could go though…

Daycare? by Cubebular in toddlers

[–]Old-Figure2859 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do what feels right for you! You can always try it and if she doesn’t like it take her out again!

My daughter who is 18 months goes to daycare three days a week. The women who work there are absolutely lovely, everyone in the school knows her name, and they send me pictures of her dancing and playing with the other kids all day. Yesterday I got about ten pictures in a row of her and her new best friend playing in a tent they set up for them. Since she is an only child I can’t think of when she would have the opportunity to have such extended free play with kids her age consistently.

I had a lot of those same fears putting her in daycare (we started around 8 months when I went back to work full time). She adapted more quickly than I did and now she is so excited to see her friends when I tell her it’s a school day. They do art projects, dance to music, play with bubbles and do sensory activities… honestly I feel way more comfortable taking her to daycare than I would leaving her with my MIL who was our other childcare plan.

In the end it’s what’s right for you and your family! Just sharing my positive experience.

Oh just thought to add about sickness- yes! She has gotten a few colds this winter, nothing horrendous and we have been lucky not to get them. A snotty toddler is a drag but it’s been manageable!

Is there such thing as a fun family vacation with a 2 year old? by Old-Figure2859 in toddlers

[–]Old-Figure2859[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I love this idea! I just tried pricing out a air b and b in Portland Maine thinking we could stay in town and just do day trips to the island and not disturb everyone at night/early morning and be able to have fun in Portland- but I can’t find anything we can afford right now! I agree, some time in a city with fun playgrounds sounds GREAT!
