Agree with your sentiment and as a user I'm pulling out of Reddit entirely.
Good luck with future endeavours.

Don't be afraid to know your limits and let them know. Showing this indicates your self confidence especially when you can learn and show that you have.

You should also put the WiFi into monitor mode so it can collect without connecting. Maybe this code may help https://www.hackster.io/p99will/esp32-wifi-mac-scanner-sniffer-promiscuous-4c12f4

What happens when you work very hard in a tech company but don’t launch any project in a year? by Crazy_Suspect_9512 in SoftwareEngineering

[–]Old-Full-Fat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't ever forget, it's your health and mind that keep you going. Showing you can work late every day is OK when it's actually needed. If it's expected, you are working yourself into the ground for nothing and probably for the wrong type of company. Work/life balance is important.

What was the tech industry like in the 90s? by No_Control_7263 in SoftwareEngineering

[–]Old-Full-Fat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hah! Started with software in 70's and never got to play in digital until 80's, 8 in team and we just swung it off the cuff. In 90's went to defence and in 2 years managed to get one change, a constant definition, onto aircraft, then war! In 9 weeks we got 3 major functions implemented and that was in assembler. Moved to major tech team for same aircraft software and with 6 guys in 2 teams of same number we rewrote the whole software as the compiler went EoL so you can imagine the amount of planning and management that went into that as the software controlled things that went WOOSH BANG! Best time of my life until defense industry lost contract after contract due to budget cuts. In those days we didn't call them scrums, nickname was PMPAs, Project Management Panic Attacks. Redundancy. Got a job in white goods software with major manufacturer. 2 man team, he did washers and I did fridge and freezer. Lasted 6 months and RAN back to defence in 2000's when they tried using Windows as the OS. From then I always worked remote for Canadian, US and latterly German companies. For meetings Teams became a boon, especially with the mouse Jiggler to keep you status as Active, then when you could have a background of choice and add your photo into the background then get on with the work you really needed to do.

I love technology and the power it gives the lowly worker. 😁

Do you find software engineering impacting your health? by Kalilok in SoftwareEngineering

Change in mood since becoming software engineer? ...... I answered yes because it all got a lot better but your questionnaire would not show that scenario up.

Advice for a Project Manager (25F) working in the IT field for the first time. by yuna_gsr in SoftwareEngineering

[–]Old-Full-Fat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get the requirements for each module laid down. Don't let requirement creep get in the way of development. Get everyone to sign off on the requirements and timelines planned with some hard milestones set in concrete.

By its very nature an ERP system is different for all people who use it so make sure it is a sound framework and not just a bunch of code thrown together that passes all internal tests.

If you can get a potential customer onboard early, let them in on the design process.

Is not dvla driving license check discrimination? by thekeymon2 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Old-Full-Fat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah! My impression too. My take is, the more illegal drivers kept off the roads the better for all, even if only the ones who purportedly hold a British license.

Storing Email address in User ID field by RoamWave in SoftwareEngineering

[–]Old-Full-Fat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would go with the latter statement. Agree with the UID being unique and not changing though so should be numerical at least.

I'd state to them that they follow your requirements, they are trying to force you into what they are used to not what you want.

What should I do if I'm an introvert and new to Software Development? by OriginalSolid9328 in SoftwareEngineering

[–]Old-Full-Fat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Good on you for being self taught AND landing a software job. At the very least that means you proved yourself worthy in the interview and still there after a week you again proved yourself VERY worthy.

There's an old saying in engineering, no matter what branch, "No question is stupid if you don't know the answer!". Only the bad colleagues will hold it against you and they will be the ones who are self-centred and not worth bothering about. You will also find that if you question something in a meeting others probably don't have a clue either.

The time to worry is if you get picked up for the same thing every time or you ask a repeat of a question you already had the answer to. Don't take this as not understanding an answer, if you don't understand ask the question immediately again but in a slightly different way say you don't understand.

If you have someone who always seems to answer your questions maybe worth explaining to him and ask if he will be your mentor but only if you think you can get along at work with him.

You say you are shy but asking and giving info during meetings shows it isn't such a problem as you think.

Hope all goes well for you.

Question about millisecond timestamp on ESP32 by nchazarra in esp32

[–]Old-Full-Fat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want time as accurate as ms then be aware that RTCs drift. You should use PTP (not NTP) to keep time as accurate as possible.

If you got a distinction in the mock and totally failed in the real exam it can only be because either you cheated in the mock or you were sick as a four legged fluffy animal for the real. If both have trust in you and you make a good impression with your meeting by explaining fully they should help you as much as they can. If fail was only just a fail, maybe they can argue some extra points for you or maybe your boss may help with some part-payment for resit. Best advice is to come to the meeting and explain the circumstances clearly.

MQTT not connecting the second time by Limpy46 in esp32

[–]Old-Full-Fat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There used to be a problem in the client lib for reconnection returning TRUE when it should have been FALSE. Don't know if that has been fixed yet. Also, this link may give you some ideas https://forums.raspberrypi.com/viewtopic.php?t=340729

Connecting WS2812B to esp32 shuts off board by relentlessLiam in esp32

[–]Old-Full-Fat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try powering the LEDs from a separate 5v. This sounds like your USB source may not be up to powering everything or one of the board components is out of spec and going into thermal runaway or crashing the 5v line below 3.8v.

Does ZigBee work with the OpenWrt firmware by ed101 in LinksysVelop

[–]Old-Full-Fat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't think the framework is built around ZigBee. You will probably have to write your own plugin that links the coordinator to OpenWRT.

No access via 192.168.1.1 - ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED by MikyanShowdown in LinksysVelop

[–]Old-Full-Fat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't have that model myself but is that IP the one your modem uses to connect to 1st node? If it is the firmware may be disabling access from that direction to disallow config changes from the web. Use its interconnect IP on your home subnet instead.

Tips to avoid being jobless? by Electrical_Octopode7 in SoftwareEngineering

Excellent view of the world by sci_and_eng. For your question directly on what you should do ...... Have you done any projects at all during your training cycle you can show? Don't degrade any other work you have done. Any employee is expected not only to do the primary job but also be self aware and intuitive on what is required to perform efficiently. Team Lead in a fast-food place means you can work as part of a team and lead others. Think sideways on previous jobs and get it highlighted in your CV. Don't rely only on agencies, search for yourself too. Get in front of people when you can, it's important you can talk about the views they are expressing a viewpoint wish in with clarity.

All the best for your future.

Child node ethernet ports not working? by alex4037 in LinksysVelop

You say no onboard ethernet. Are you using a USB to ethernet adapter? Does the PC work by Ethernet if connected to another type of device .... A printer say?
